Rodriguez scratched from Kentucky Derby 2025: Baeza to run for roses at Churchill Downs
Rodriguez scratched from Kentucky Derby 2025: Baeza to run for roses at Churchill Downs Bob Baffert trainee Rodriguez has been scratched from Saturday's Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs because of a foot bruise, co-owner Tom Ryan announced via X on Thursday afternoon. 'Out of an abundance of caution, we have made a very tough decision to scratch our Derby horse, Rodriguez,' Ryan wrote on X. He has a small but slightly sensitive foot bruise that will need a few more days. Therefore, we are resetting our plans and will target him for the Preakness.' 🏇: Live updates: Live updates at Kentucky Oaks 2025: Hats are here, and they're big this year Rodriguez won the Grade 2 Wood Memorial on April 5 at Aqueduct and was considered to be among the pace-setters for the Kentucky Derby. Baffert still has one Kentucky Derby horse in 2-year-old champion Citizen Bull. The defection of Rodriguez means Baeza — the runner-up in the Santa Anita Derby on April 5 — will move into the field for the Run for the Roses on Saturday at Churchill Downs. Post time is set for 7:02 p.m. The race will be televised by NBC. Baeza was the lone horse on the also-eligible list for the Kentucky Derby. The late-developing colt broke his maiden Feb. 14 and then briefly took the lead in the Santa Anita Derby before finishing as the runner-up, three-quarters of a length behind Journalism — the 3-1 morning-line favorite for Derby 151. 'I thought he ran a remarkable race,' trainer John Shirreffs said. 'He went wide most of the way. Coming out of the turn into the stretch, he was lugging in a little bit. Once he changed leads, he took off again. Being green and knowing he can do better, it was a really good race.' Because the Santa Anita Derby had only five runners, Baeza earned just 37.5 qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby instead of the typical allotment of 50. Shirreffs won the Run for the Roses with 50-1 shot Giacomo in 2005. Flavien Prat, previously on Neoequos, will now have the ride on Baeza. Luis Saez will ride Neoequos. How to nominate your employer for the Courier Journal's 5th annual Top Workplaces program
Looking to show your employer some love? Now's your chance. The Courier Journal will, for the fifth consecutive year, give awards to the Top Workplaces in the Louisville area, honoring individuals and organizations that create an extraordinary impact in their employees' lives and our community. The nomination period for the program is open now through May 9. Any organization with 50 or more employees in the region is eligible to compete for a Top Workplaces award. Standout companies will be honored in fall 2025. As you gear up to celebrate the 2025 Kentucky Derby, please take a moment to nominate and celebrate your employer too. Anyone can nominate any organization, whether it is public, private, non-profit, a school, or even a government agency. To nominate an employer or for more information on the awards, just go to or call 502-416-0634. There is no cost to participate. To qualify as a Louisville Top Workplace, employees evaluate their workplace using a short 25-question survey that takes a few minutes to complete. Companies will be surveyed through July. Energage, the Pennsylvania-based research partner for the project, conducts Top Workplaces surveys for media in 65 markets nationwide and surveyed more than 2 million employees at more than 8,000 organizations in the past year. With businesses across all industries and sectors bracing for economic uncertainty amid high inflation, on-again, off-again tariffs, and consumers becoming more conscious of spending, the recognition of a Top Workplaces award honors your employees for their dedication to the company mission, highlights your business in the community, and shows future employees how your company stacks up with competitors in the region. In 2024, more than 1,000 public, private, non-profit, and government organizations in Greater Louisville were invited to participate in the Courier Journal's Top Workplaces. A record 27 organizations earned recognition as Top Workplaces. "Earning a Top Workplaces award is a distinctive mark of excellence, setting companies apart in a recognizable way," said Eric Rubino, Energage CEO. "Top Workplaces embody the highest standards, and this award, rooted in authentic employee feedback, should be a point of immense pride."
