Moment man is attacked by thug armed with a 'crossbow': Ring doorbell footage shows victim begging for help 'after being shot in street'

This is the moment a man was shot with a crossbow in a brutal attack caught on doorbell camera. Disturbing video shows the terrified victim - who has a bloodied face - running towards a house before frantically ringing the bell in an attempt to escape. A masked shooter dressed in black appears and raises a crossbow - prompting the man to surge forward in an attempt to grab it. He then runs back towards the front door and bangs on it several before the shooter pulls the trigger, leaving him screaming in agony. The attacker is seen ripping the arrow out of the victim's leg before the footage cuts away. Police are now investigating the horrific incident, which took place on Downway Lane in St Helens, Merseyside at around 10pm on Sunday. They said the attack involved five men, who were all wearing dark clothing and face coverings. The victim was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition. In the footage, the attacker is dressed in a navy and grey The North Face jacket, grey tracksuit trousers and black trainers. He has his hood up and is wearing sunglasses. Police believe the attack was targeted and are asking for the public's help to track down the five suspects. Det Insp Steve Byrom said: 'We are in the very early stages of the investigation and we are determined to find the people responsible. 'I understand that the community will rightly be concerned by this incident but please be assured that we are determined to find the suspects involved. 'We believe that five males fled the area on foot and enquiries are ongoing to locate them and find any weapons used in this incident. 'We are also keen to speak to anyone who was in the general area who saw or heard anything suspicious or believes they captured something significant on their dashcam, CCTV or doorbell camera. 'We know that violence and weapons causes misery on our streets and we would ask for the public's help in coming forward with any bit of information they have so we can find the people responsible.' There is currently no registration system for owning a crossbow and no requirement for a licence. But it is illegal for anyone under 18 to buy or own one, with anyone carrying a crossbow in public without a reasonable excuse facing up to four years behind bars. Last year, a convicted stalker was shot dead by police in London after he broke into a house wielding two of the weapons. Bryce Hodgson had been convicted of a five-year court restraining order after he entered a woman's bedroom without consent, sent text messages demanding that she open her door and described his sick sexual fantasies. Earlier this year, Kyle Clifford, 26, was sentenced to a whole life term after using a crossbow to murder BBC racing commentator John Hunt's wife and two daughters. Recorded phone calls capture plans to shoot drugs into Fayette County Jail

Audio recordings between inmates at the Fayette County Jail and suspects outside show their conversations about their alleged attempt to smuggle drugs into the jail with a bow and arrow. Last week, jail staff found an arrow stuffed with cocaine outside the jail that had apparently been shot toward a rec window in an attempt to get the drugs inside. This week, four people were charged, including two inmates already in the jail who allegedly helped come up with the plan. Once jail staff found the arrow, the warden said they immediately began checking surveillance video and listening to inmate phone calls, which are recorded. That's when the jail said they found several phone calls where at least four people are caught discussing their plan to shoot the drugs into the jail using a crossbow. In one of the calls, you can hear an inmate say, "What do you think about that?" The person on the other line can then be heard saying, "It's possible. It can happen," going on to say, "I need a cross... the only thing I don't have is a crossbow. I need a crossbow. One with a little power behind it. Gonna have at least 200 pounds of draw." In another call, an inmate can be heard telling someone, "Make sure that goes through! Get your a** in the car and take care of the business! You hear that, bro?" The suspect is then heard saying, "It's about to be done here in a minute!" Police said Amanda Frey and Seth Stepich are the two suspects identified on the other end of the call. According to police paperwork, both Frey and Stepich are caught on video during a call with inmates Alfonso Pugh and Charles Smith discussing the plan. "It appears that (Frey and Stepich) were on a property across the road from the jail and fired this arrow across Route 21 attempting to get it into a window," said Fayette County District Attorney Mike Aubele. Aubele said Stepich is the one who shot the crossbow. Before the attempt, the four are heard using code, allegedly discussing how to stuff the bolt with cocaine. "You know what I was thinking? You can, them things that you guys are getting for the kids and stuff, you can crush them things. Crush them down and put them in Saran Wrap. Wrap them up like that," an inmate said. "OK. Alright," Frey could be heard saying. "Then Chris can do them like that. Put them in there so they got Saran Wrap, but crushed. Fill it all the way up," the inmate said. According to police paperwork, during a recorded jail call between Smith and Frey, Frey can be seen cutting a rubber glove and placing an unknown item into it and then stuffing it into the end of an arrow shaft. "We often see people talking in code, using street names, things of that nature," Aubele said. "But I will say that the jail calls, the surveillance that we have reviewed to this point, is extremely fruitful for us, and has been instrumental in bringing these charges." Police said Frey and Stepich allegedly got the crossbow from a man in Smithfield. KDKA-TV reached out to him to learn if he knew what they were using it for, but never heard back. "It is possible, based on the investigation, that there will be further charges forthcoming against other individuals," Aubele said. Since the attempt, Frey has been arrested and is now behind bars. Police said they have a warrant for Stepich's arrest. Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call Uniontown police. "People are gonna try to do whatever they can to get illegal drugs and contraband into our jails. But time and time again, our facility has been tested, and we have passed every test," Aubele said. "I think that the fact that these individuals took these steps and tried this way to get it in really speaks volume to the security measures that we have taken to this point. Because at other times throughout the history of Fayette County, it's been really easy to get drugs and contraband in our facilities, and that has changed again. Remarkable job being done by our security team at the jail as well as our Uniontown police."

Man who allegedly threatened Hennepin County deputies with crossbow arrested, charged with assault

A man responsible for dozens of 911 calls and complaints from neighbors has been arrested after Hennepin County deputies say he threatened them with a crossbow. Randy Mattews, 28, is facing one count each of felony second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and threats of violence, according to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County Court on Friday. The charges come after members of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office went to Matthews' home in Hanover, Minnesota, to help tow a car. Charges say Matthews "attempted to agitate" his dog, which he previously told law enforcement he trains for "protection and to attack people," and directed it toward the responding deputies. He eventually took the dog back to his property after multiple commands from law enforcement. Matthews then returned with another dog and approached a Hennepin County squad car. The deputy rolled the window down to speak with him, but due to Matthews' "harassing and threatening comments," charges say he disengaged, which caused Matthews to become angrier. According to the complaint, Matthews opened the door of the squad car. That's when the deputy exited the vehicle and pointed his department-issued Taser at Matthews. He deployed it, but it was ineffective. In response, Matthews ran to his home, reemerging with a crossbow. Charges say he then yelled, "You better get a different deputy out here or someone is going to get killed." After multiple commands to drop his weapon, Matthews retreated inside, but deputies say they were not able to find him after searching his residence and the surrounding property. Court records show Matthews has had six felony charges dismissed since April, including three counts of felony theft, two counts of felony aggravated forgery and felony burglary. Neighbors say Matthews has caused them problems since he moved into the house on Crow Hassan Park Road a year ago. Weeks after his arrival, neighbor Michelle Ulfers says Matthews' dog attacked hers. It was the first 911 call of many. So far this year, the sheriff's office says it has been called to Matthews' property 38 times. Matthews' next court appearance is scheduled for July 14.
