Duo charged with severely injuring customs officer using baseball bat

PETALING JAYA : A durian trader and painter pleaded not guilty in the Butterworth sessions court today to causing severe injury to a customs officer in an incident three weeks ago.
Ooi Kok Hwa, 42, and Ang Chee Guan, 37, made their pleas after the charges against them were read before judge Nor Azah Kasran, Sinar Harian reported.
They are accused of intentionally injuring a 53-year-old man with a baseball bat at the parking area of the North Butterworth Container Terminal in Penang Port at around 6.45am on May 8.
The duo were charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code with voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means, which provides for up to 20 years' imprisonment and a fine or whipping if convicted.
The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Rifaie Mohamed, while the two were represented by lawyer Y Yogeswaran.
The prosecution proposed bail of RM10,000 each, with the additional condition that they report to a police station.
However, Yogeswaran requested a lower bail amount, saying Ooi, who made RM2,500 per month as a durian trader, was divorced and supporting one child. She added that Ang had to support two children with the RM2,200 a month he earned as a painter.
The court allowed bail of RM7,000 each, with the additional condition that they report to a nearby police station on the 15th of every month, and set July 1 for re-mention of the case.
