Who could deny a hot, tired delivery driver the fruit from their cherry tree?
I couldn't understand what the food delivery bloke was saying to me. His accent was as heavy as his helmet and his words were getting lost in it. At the flats where I live, you're never more than five minutes away from a weary rider like this turning up bearing someone's tea, dinner, breakfast, lunch, snack, whatever. They're not usually there for me, but it has been known. As I parked near the entrance, I saw him hand over his goods to a neighbour, but, unusually, he seemed in no hurry to speed off. He stood there looking up at something, before getting back on his moped and making to leave. But then he looked up again, thought better of leaving and got back off his moped. It was then that he came over to me saying words I couldn't quite catch. He pointed up at the tree we were standing beneath and then I heard him properly, saying: 'Please, if I pick cherry, is that OK?' It was sweet of him to ask, not that the fruit of this improbably tall cherry tree is within my gift. It just happens to stand outside my block, so presumably belongs to all of us living there. Either way, I would have needed a heart of stone to have refused him, standing there hot and bothered and tired next to his moped, doubtless freighted with impatiently awaited burgers, chicken, noodles or some such stashed in the box on the back. All that fodder, prepared with varying levels of haste and care, brought here by him, part of an IT miracle in the shape of some app, generating percentages for corporations in far-off places of which we know and understand little. And all the carrier of this cargo wanted was a handful of cherries. I watched him stretching up with difficulty, trying to reach some low-hanging fruit. The dissonance in the scene was astounding. I ran in to get him a stepladder, but when I looked out of the window I saw him riding away. I hope he had some cherries in his pockets. Adrian Chiles is a Guardian columnist

Food delivery rider caught staging an accident with customer's food order
Photo: @bananagiant TikTok SINGAPORE: A Singapore resident was surprised when reviewing her home's CCTV footage. She witnessed what appeared to be a food delivery rider staging an accident outside her flat, possibly to avoid completing the delivery. The footage, later shared on TikTok by user @bananagiant, shows a man arriving at her ground-floor flat with a food order. Rather than completing the delivery, the rider is seen carefully placing the food bag on the ground before gently lowering his bicycle over it. 'Why did the deliveryman stop in front of my house?' the resident asked in the video, zooming in on the scene. 'What is going on?' @bananagiant I I look left look right, look left look right, for free food😁👍🏽 ♬ Funny – Gold-Tiger Things took an even stranger turn as the man took out his phone and appeared to photograph the scene, possibly to document what looked like an accident. 'Oops, he got into an accident,' the TikToker quipped. Moments later, the rider retrieved an item from the food bag and tossed it onto the ground, splattering what looked like sauce or gravy onto the floor. He then picked up his bicycle, put the food bag into his delivery carrier, and cycled away. The TikToker joked, mimicking a possible company response: 'We're sorry—your rider was involved in an incident, and your order was unfortunately spilled during delivery. Our team is looking into it and will update you shortly.' She later added, 'Yay I got free food!'—hinting that the man might have intended to falsely claim the order was undeliverable and keep it for himself. Not all viewers were amused. 'Did he fake an accident just to get free food home?' one commenter asked. Another noted, 'Poor cleaner has to clear the mess.' Responding to that, the resident clarified: 'Nahhh my husband had to clear it because it's the ground floor, prone to pests.' It remains unclear which delivery platform the rider was working for. The video has since gone viral, with netizens calling on the delivery company to look into the incident. Some have also called for better checks and accountability measures to prevent similar cases of misuse.
