The shops underneath the Umbrella will be given a fresh look, with handpainted signs and a bright colour scheme.
Shopfronts will boast bright red, green and blue paint and new dynamic lighting will be installed to brighten up the area.
The Central Station sign will also be replaced with a new font, the Glasgow Times reports.
And the Gaelic word for umbrella, 'An Sgàilean', may be displayed or instead 'Scotland's Railway'.
The font could resemble the style back in the 1950s.
Council chiefs believe the revamp could bring more punters to the area and support businesses in the city.
A statement on the plans said designs would be sympathetic to homeless people who use the space following feedback during a consultation.
Network Rail will take on the project once a contractor is hired, with Glasgow City Council to make a financial contribution.
Councillors were given an update at a committee last week as part of a report on the city centre strategy.
The Victorian-style structure features a glass-walled bridge for platforms at Glasgow Central station.
New £18m Scots train station near Glasgow set to open next year
It got its name in the aftermath of the Highland clearances when displaced Scots travelled to Glasgow to find work.
It got its name after many would use the bridge to seek shelter from the weather.
Many highlanders would meet under the bridge during the day and at weekends to keep in touch with old pals who had also moved to the city.
The street underneath the bridge is filled with bars, takeaways and shops.
