Buncombe County jail officer arrested, charged with DWI, fired by sheriff
ASHEVILLE - A Buncombe County detention officer was fired from the sheriff's office after police arrested her June 13 for allegedly driving while impaired.
Tauqullia King, 39, a detention officer with the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office, was charged with driving while impaired and possession of an open container, according to court records. On June 13, King drove on State Street in West Asheville while impaired and with an open alcoholic beverage in the car's passenger area, according to her arrest warrant.
She was released later that morning from the Buncombe County Detention Facility — her former place of employment — on a written promise to appear in court, records show.
The sheriff's office was made aware of the charges the same day she was arrested, according to a June 17 news release from the agency.
After reviewing what happened, the sheriff's office "has chosen to no longer allow" King to serve as a detention officer, the release said. Due to personnel laws, the release said the sheriff's office is unable to "discuss this any further."
The Citizen Times requested her hire date and the public version of her personnel file from the sheriff's office.
