Brit dad, 32, found dead hours after being escorted off flight & separated from family on Turkey hols

A BRIT dad was found dead from a fall in Turkey just hours after being escorted off a plane for being drunk. Builder Ben Crook from Caerphilly, South Wales had been in Antalya with his partner and two kids to celebrate his 32nd birthday. 4 4 4 Crook, who was a nervous flyer, had been drinking on the way to Bristol Airport and had taken cocaine. When their flight was delayed, he drank even more alcohol at the airport. But once they were on the plane, Crook began behaving erratically, an inquest heard. He shouted at an air steward who refused to serve him more alcohol and had a row with his partner in which he smashed both their phones. Crook was escorted off the flight and separated from his family upon landing in Turkey. His partner Jess Jenkins was advised to take their kids to the hotel and wait for his arrival. But Ben never made it to the hotel, the inquest at Gwent Coroner's Court heard. He was last seen in Kaleiçi, Antalya's old town district, and was found the next day in the Selçuk area. After she raised the alarm over Ben's disappearance, Jess received a message from a woman who had spotted him. It read: "He said he smashed up his phone and had brought a new one but it was not ringing for some reason. "He used my phone to send a message to his friend and we gave him our number if he needed more help. "He looked shaken and hungover. "After the Facebook message and ringing his friend, he crossed the harbour and walked, we presumed, to the police station for help." Ben was discovered lying on rocky ground at the bottom of a tall building. He died at Antalya Training and Research Hospital at 2.15am on September 25. Ben's dad flew out to Turkey upon hearing his son was missing, but found out the tragic news upon his arrival. He had been messaged by Ben to ask for the name of the hotel they were staying at on Facebook Messenger, but it had ended up in the spam folder. A post mortem examination conducted in Turkey found that Ben died with injuries in keeping with a fall. A further examination in the UK determined his cause of head was a fractured skull and pelvis caused by blunt trauma from the fall. The court heard that he may have fallen while he was smoking. Gwent coroner Caroline Saunders said that drugs and alcohol "may have caused disorientation and poor judgement". But she added "this is insufficient to determine he fell as a result of the drugs he had taken." She said: "I find the fall was an accident, the exact details of which are unknown. "On September 24, 2024, Ben Crook fell from height whilst on holiday in Turkey and sustained severe head and pelvic injuries and died on September 25, 2024. "The conclusion I reach is that of an accident." 4

State claims boyfriend was intoxicated when Vanessa's body was found

Murder accused Rob Evans was reportedly so drunk the morning his girlfriend's battered and bruised body was discovered in his holiday home, that he was unable to recall what had happened. The state claims further that he gave at least three conflicting versions of events. Prosecutor Bianca Burger said that in his official statement to the police, Evans had relayed how he and Vanessa van Rensburg had arrived at his Oyster Bay holiday house at about 4pm on April 19. A couple of hours later, a friend, Mike McAfee, invited them to join a braai at the home of Keith Belling. McAfee left his bakkie at Evans' house and all three headed to the braai in Evans' vehicle. Reading from Evans' statement, Burger continued: 'On arrival at Keith's house we were invited to join their braai and we had some drinks with them. 'Vanessa left early ... before me ... and I later went home. 'I had too much to drink. I cannot recall how I got to the house, whether I drove or not, but I know I drove my bakkie [to the braai] and Mike left his bakkie in my yard.' Back at the holiday home, he said, he could not recall seeing Van Rensburg there. 'I went inside to make a fire as we had decided to braai. 'I could not keep track of time but when I got out of the braai area to the sitting area, I saw Vanessa lying on the floor. 'I went to her to see if she was OK, but it seemed there was no life in her any more. 'I then went down to Keith's house to seek help and they came back with me.' In the second version, Burger said, Evans told a police officer who arrived at the scene at 1.45am that he had gone to a braai at Belling's house, returned home, and did not see Van Rensburg's body until later, when he emerged from the braai area after attempting to make a fire. In the third version, at 2.35am, he allegedly phoned Van Rensburg's young children's paternal grandmother, crying, and eventually told her that Van Rensburg was dead. When the woman asked what had happened, Evans allegedly said that they had been braaiing for two hours at his house and that he later stumbled upon her body. He said her lips were blue and he tried to resuscitate her for two hours. Burger said she had also obtained a statement from a local fisherman, only identified as Mr Taljaard. She said Taljaard alleged that he drove past Evans' house at about 8.30pm and that he had heard shouting and fighting coming from the property. When he drove past again later that night, at about 10pm, Evans was allegedly sitting on a bench outside his house and drinking. He said he could not see Van Rensburg. The bail application continues on Friday. Evans remains in custody. The Herald

Montana man's drunken attempt to impress women leaves him humiliated

A drunk man in Montana was left red in the face after attempting to impress a woman by climbing the iconic Wyoming elk antler arches moments before police arrived. The humiliating spectacle began after the man, on a night out drinking, had met two women and stumbled across the archway on May 13. Around 12.40am, the Jackson Police Department said Teton County Dispatch had been alerted to 'people on top of the arches,' Cowboy State Daily reported. His daring act, however, left him red in the face after climbing onto the archway and reaching the top, only for a police officer to arrive on scene. The man, from Belgrade, said he had 'been drinking and wanted to climb the arch to impress some girls he had just met.' Which only seemed to backfire when he was handed a fine for $100 from the police officer for climbing the arch. The four elk antler arches are iconic for the Jackson area and a popular spot for tourists, but climbing them is not advised and has been made illegal. Lt. Russ Ruschill with the JPD told the outlet that it's uncommon for people to attempt to climb the arches and could only recall a handful of times throughout his career of reports of such behavior. 'I've seen it a couple of times in my career here, but don't remember the last time we've written a citation specifically for climbing one of the arches,' he said. However, he was surprised that the man was able to, while drunk especially, climb so high onto the arch. 'I don't think I've ever seen anybody quite get up as far onto the top like this gentleman,' Ruschill added. 'We usually catch them thinking about it, talking about it or just starting to climb.' Photos shared on Instagram showed one woman reach near to the top of the arch before the gentleman climbed and managed to reach the very top. The photos showed one woman remaining on the ground with her phone out before police arrived. The gentleman's actions, however, spurred outrage online as the account that posted the photos wrote: 'Idiots in Jackson get caught climbing up the arch antlers in Jackson Square.' 'Being drunk or being a dumba** isn't an excuse!' Commenters on the post shared the same frustration, with one who wrote :'They should be fined at a minimum. Community service, maybe. Unbelievable!' Another called the climbers 'entitled,' while others said more respect should be shown especially when visiting from out of town. One said: 'The arrogance of people never surprises me any longer. Where is the respect?!' Ruschill also stressed the dangers of climbing on top of the arches, especially when intoxicated. 'It's a long way to fall from the top of the southwest arch,' he said. 'Someone could get injured or killed doing such a thing. That's the public safety message to this incident.' The man can pay the $100 bond or plead his innocence, Cowboy State Daily reported. 'Our defendant is innocent until proven guilty,' Ruschill said. 'But in Jackson, it's illegal to climb something that's not meant to be climbed.'
