Carney fills out team with 39 parliamentary secretaries
Social Sharing Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the team that will support him and his cabinet as his minority government tries to fulfil its mandate during tumultuous economic times. The list of 39 parliamentary secretaries include a handful of Liberal MPs who once served in cabinet but were dropped after Carney's win on April 28. Parliamentary secretaries are not cabinet ministers, but they assist ministers and secretaries of state. They're often tasked with supporting them in the House, during the legislative process and in making announcements. The job comes with a $20,200 bump on top of their MP pay of $209,800. "Canada's new parliamentary secretary team will deliver on the government's mandate for change, working collaboratively with all parties in Parliament to build the strongest economy in the G7, advance a new security and economic partnership with the United States and help Canadians get ahead," said Carney in a statement. Here are the the new parliamentary secretaries: Toronto MP Karim Bardeesy becomes parliamentary secretary to the minister of industry. Nova Scotia MP and onetime Liberal leader hopeful Jaime Battiste becomes parliamentary secretary to the minister of Crown-Indigenous relations. Former immigration minister and Montreal MP Rachel Bendayan becomes parliamentary secretary to the prime minister Former agriculture minister and Nova Scotia MP Kody Blois also becomes parliamentary secretary to the prime minister. P.E.I. MP Sean Casey becomes parliamentary secretary to the minister of veterans affairs and associate minister of national defence. Quebec MP Sophie Chatel becomes parliamentary secretary to the minister of agriculture and agri-food. Quebec MP Madeleine Chenette becomes parliamentary secretary to the minister of Canadian identity and culture and minister responsible for official languages, and parliamentary secretary to the secretary of state for sport. Agriculture key sticking point in EU trade negotiations
Agriculture has continued to be the main sticking point in free trade negotiations with the EU overnight, NewsWire understands. Both Canberra and Brussels have said a free-trade agreement is on the brink of being inked, with unpredictability from the US instilling a sense of urgency on both sides. Such a deal would give Australian producers uninhibited access to the EU – 27 member states with a combined population of half a billion. But agriculture is a politically charged issue for many in the bloc, with farmers fearing increased competition and regions claiming exclusivity on the names of certain products, such as feta and prosecco. These so-called geographical indicators were central to derailing previous free trade talks at the end of 2023. NewsWire understands agriculture was presented as a must-have during negotiations on the sidelines of a major trade summit in Paris. Trade Minister Don Farrell, who is spearheading the talks, said a deal would 'deliver benefits across every sector of the Australian economy'. 'This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to secure access to the world's largest single market and deepen ties with a vital economic partner,' Senator Farrell said. 'A trade agreement with the EU isn't just about boosting exports, it's about building economic resilience in a rapidly changing global environment. 'A trade deal with the EU would deliver benefits across every sector of the Australian economy. 'It would drive investment, strengthen supply chains, boost innovation, deepen education ties, lower costs for Australian consumers and business, and create a wealth of export opportunities. 'Both Australia and the EU recognise that now is the time to strengthen our economic partnership, and we're working through the remaining issues to try and finalise the deal.' Australia and the EU, both key US allies, have been included in baseline blanket 10 per cent levies on foreign imports as well the 50 per cent duties on steel and aluminium. The US President doubled the steel and aluminium imposts on Wednesday, drawing ire from other Western governments. A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson said DFAT was 'engaging with industry and assessing the potential impact of the increased tariffs'. 'We continue to advocate for Australian trade with the US and put forward our strong case to be exempt from these tariffs,' they told NewsWire. Senator Farrell said the tariffs were 'unjustified'. 'Australia's position has been consistent and clear,' he said. 'These tariffs are unjustified and not the act of a friend. 'They are an act of economic self-harm that will only hurt consumers and businesses who rely on free and fair trade. 'We will continue to engage and advocate strongly for the removal of the tariffs.'

Talks revive as Australia and EU determined to seal trade deal

The meeting on the sidelines of the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting comes amid today's US deadline for countries to send their best offer in trade negotiations. Farrell met the US trade representative Jamieson Greer in Paris on Tuesday, after Australia criticized US President Donald Trump's move to double steel tariffs to 50% from 25% and called for the removal of a 10% tariff on all its exports. 'Both Australia and the EU recognize that now is the time to strengthen our economic partnership, and we're working through the remaining issues to try and finalize the deal,' Farrell told Reuters in a statement. A pact with the region was 'about building economic resilience in a rapidly changing global environment', said Farrell. Agriculture topped a list of outstanding issues for an EU deal that officials will work on, although Australian officials could not say when the pact would be agreed. Australia has previously offered to put the removal of its luxury car tax on the table but wants greater access for lamb and beef exports to Europe. However, some big meat-producing EU member countries like France have reservations about opening the bloc's markets to potential major competitors like Australia. Such concerns are also holding up talks with South American countries. Sefcovic said he had also confirmed the EU's interest in 'structured cooperation' with the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade bloc, which Australia currently chairs.

Egypt: TSFE plans to maximize returns from state assets, El-Khatib
Arab Finance: The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE) is planning to maximize returns from state assets, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan El-Khatib announced. The government is also keen on attracting more foreign investment for the fund's projects and moving forward with the State Ownership Policy Document by expanding partnerships with the private sector, added El-Khatib. The remarks came during the minister's speech at the Emerging Markets Intelligence & Research (EMIR) Center conference held in the UAE, with the participation of CEOs of 200 companies. El-Khatib noted that negotiations are underway between Egypt and the UAE regarding a strategic partnership agreement to advance joint economic and investment relations. He reviewed the currently adopted measures by the government related to fiscal, monetary, and trade policies aimed at facilitating investor access, attracting more investment, and increasing Egypt's foreign trade. The minister also highlighted the state's plans to reinforce the role of the private sector in the economy and expand the volume of domestic and foreign investment by securing an attractive and sustainable investment environment, in addition to formulating supportive policies and legislation.
