E-bike hit-and-run kills pensioner

An elderly woman has died after being hit by an electric bike in a suspected hit-and-run. The woman, who was in her 80s, was struck by a black Sur-Ron bike as she crossed the road in Sunderland on Friday afternoon, according to Northumbria Police. Emergency services attended but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. An 18-year-old man was later arrested suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on bail pending further inquiries. Sections of Burdon Road and Lidcombe Close were closed for around four hours following the incident. Sgt Andrew Ferguson, of Northumbria Police, described it as 'devastating' and appealed for any witnesses to come forward. He added: 'We know this is quite a busy stretch of road, with lots of people and vehicles in the area at the time, so please get in touch if you saw anything.' Police said the e-bike involved has not been recovered and that the victim's next of kin were receiving support. It remains unclear what speed the vehicle was travelling at when it hit the elderly woman. Crackdown on e-bike seizures Police forces have increasingly begun cracking down on illegally modified e-bikes, with seizures having almost doubled in the past year amid concerns over their speed and weight posing a threat to pedestrians. Forces across the UK confiscated 937 e-bikes in the year to Aug 11, according to Freedom of Information figures obtained by the PA news agency. In 2023, there were just 511 e-bikes seized. Electric motors fitted to e-bikes must – by law – cut out when a speed of 15.5mph is reached. However, police are increasingly finding that many have been modified to reach much higher speeds.
