(AP Photo/Peter Dejong) THE HAGUE, Netherlands — A teacher was stabbed and seriously injured at a musical performance by elementary school pupils on Wednesday night, Dutch police said in a statement Thursday. Three suspects were later arrested. The 53-year-old teacher was stabbed as he tried to intervene in an argument between three men at a cultural centre in Alblasserdam, police said, adding that many people witnessed the stabbing and were offered counselling in the immediate aftermath. Children at elementary schools in the Netherlands traditionally put on shows for their parents in the last week before the summer holidays. A 44-year-old man was arrested close to the cultural centre shortly after the stabbing. Two other men later went to a hospital in nearby Rotterdam. One of them, who had undisclosed injuries, was arrested there. The other man fled but was quickly arrested, police said. The reason for the argument that preceded the stabbing was not immediately clear. The alleged role of the three men in the stabbing was being investigated. Their identities were not disclosed, in line with Dutch privacy guidelines. Police also impounded two vehicles as part of their investigation. The incident happened at a musical show put on by final-year students at an elementary school in Alblasserdam, a small town famous for the World Heritage-listed Kinderdijk windmills on the outskirts of the town. 'Careless and reckless act': Police deem Edmonton playground fire as arson
Just four days after an elementary school playground in north Edmonton was destroyed by a fire, police have determined the blaze was a result of arson. Just after 8 a.m. on Saturday, a fire broke out at St. Pius X Elementary School's playground in the community of Sherbrooke. While police have yet to make any arrests in relation to the suspected arson, investigators said in a media conference call on Wednesday afternoon that the investigation is moving forward. 'The investigation has progressed nicely,' said EPS acting inspector Eric Stewart. 'We have been able to gather really good evidence and CCTV footage of this event. The investigation is progressing in the way we'd like. We've not identified suspects yet, but I'm confident that will come in the very near future.' Stewart said they don't know as of yet the ages of the suspects, and total damage to the playground hasn't been determined yet either, but investigators are thankful that the fire didn't spread to the elementary school. Fire crews arrived on scene at 8:06 a.m. and were able to extinguish the fire in 17 minutes. There were no reports of injuries and no evacuations were needed. 'We can't say what caused it, whether there was an accelerator used or not or whether it's the material or other factors involved that made it catch so quickly. It went up pretty fast,' said Stewart. 'Not in my 22 years of policing have I ever seen any case like this. It's not a common occurrence we see here in Edmonton.' Sherbrooke Community League members spent nearly a decade raising funds to build the playground, and now they're left devastated. But the community is trying to rally to raise funds to rebuild the playground. Police are working with fire crews to determine how the blaze caught so quickly. Investigators are also trying to determine whether this was a 'targeted' or 'random' event. Stewart said they can confirm there is more than one suspect, and that multiple people were in the area of the playground prior to, during and after the fire was set. 'To the individuals who were at the scene at the time of this event. You either witnessed it, or have knowledge of it, or were involved in this. We ask that you come forward and contact police as soon as you can,' said Stewart. 'This was a very careless and reckless act by the individuals involved in this event. 'We're very fortunate that this school didn't catch fire. It was very close proximity to this playground. It's a very unfortunate set of circumstances that now the kids that attend this school, and all the community members that put effort into building this playground, don't have a playground in the next school year.' jhills@ Related Police seek assistance in suspicious fire at Edmonton elementary school playground

CTA Construction Managers Begins Building New Green Meadow Elementary School in Maynard, MA
CTA Construction Managers recently broke ground on the new school, which was designed by Mount Vernon Group Architects. The project is being overseen by the town's OPM firm, Colliers Project Leaders. MAYNARD, Mass., July 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- CTA Construction Managers is proud to announce it was recently awarded the contract to construct the new Green Meadow Elementary School in Maynard, Massachusetts. The project, designed by Mount Vernon Group Architects and overseen by Colliers Project Leaders, officially broke ground last month and marks another milestone in CTA's long-standing commitment to educational facility construction across the Commonwealth. The new 90,525-square-foot, two-story facility will serve approximately 395 students in grades K–3, and will include a dedicated Pre-K program for about 100 students. Approximately 110 faculty and staff will work in the building. "The school has been designed with a central core for shared public spaces—such as the gymnasium, cafetorium, administrative offices, health suite, and media center—flanked by two distinct classroom 'neighborhoods' that accommodate Pre-K through grade 3. These wings feature general and special education classrooms, support spaces, common areas, and student and staff restrooms," said Chris LeBlanc, Senior Associate at Mount Vernon Group Architects. "Situated on a 33-acre site adjacent to residential neighborhoods, wooded land, and a town park, the new building is being constructed just 30 feet from the existing school—an active and logistically complex site. Once the new school is complete, the existing structure will be abated and demolished to make way for additional site development," said Phil Palumbo, Director, Colliers Project Leaders. "CTA is honored to return to Maynard, where we previously built the award-winning Maynard High School," said Lyle Coghlin, Principal, CTA Construction Mangers. "We're also proud to continue our longstanding partnerships with Mount Vernon Group Architects and Colliers Project Leaders. This project reflects our shared commitment to creating innovative and sustainable learning environments for Massachusetts communities," he continued. This marks CTA's fourth collaboration with Mount Vernon Group and the fourth project with Colliers Project Leaders, reflecting more than 12 years of successful partnerships in educational construction with the two firms. The CTA Construction Managers team recently completed the foundation, and Green Meadow Elementary School is on track for the scheduled completion in the summer of 2027.
