Panthers select Georgia RB Trevor Etienne in the fourth round

The Cowboys didn't have a fourth-round pick in 2024 after trading for Trey Lance, and they missed out on adding a running back in the round. They don't have a fourth-round pick today, having traded it to the Panthers for Jonathan Mingo. The Panthers used the choice on a running back, selecting Georgia's Trevor Etienne. The 114th overall pick is the brother of Jaguars running back Travis Etienne, a first-round pick in 2021. Trevor Etienne joins a running backs room that includes starter Chuba Hubbard and ex-Cowboy Rico Dowdle, who signed in free agency. Jonathon Brooks is expected to miss the season after tearing his ACL again. Etienne played two seasons at Florida before transferring to Georgia, where he rushed for 609 yards and nine touchdowns on 122 carries in 10 games. He also caught 32 passes for 194 yards. Etienne had only 371 carries in college.

Instant Analysis: What draft profiles say about Cowboys' No. 76 pick Shavon Revel, Jr.

Instant Analysis: What draft profiles say about Cowboys' No. 76 pick Shavon Revel, Jr. One of the main roster needs in Dallas has been addressed with the Cowboys' No. 76 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft. While the wait for a wide receiver and a running back will apparently extend into Day 3, the team has now added a talented young cornerback to their secondary. But for a unit that already has question marks heading into the upcoming season, the new guy has some uncertainty of his own. Shavon Revel, Jr. from East Carolina is the Cowboys' third-round pick. The just-turned-24-year-old was an official "30" visitor and comes with an inspiring story, going from two years of juco and an overnight warehouse job to a tryout at ECU. He earned a scholarship on the spot, provided he could raise his grades. He did just that and went on to a breakout season for the Pirates in 2023, afterward shunning big-money transfer portal offers to stick with the school that gave him a shot at playing- and graduating- when no one else would. But then an ACL tear in a September practice cut short his promising 2024 campaign. Cowboys head physician Dr. Dan Cooper performed Revel's surgery in October and has informed all NFL clubs that the cornerback is on track to be fully cleared by the summer. That's a good thing, considering two-time Pro Bowler Trevon Diggs may not be ready to go by Week 1. Veteran Jourdan Lewis is an ex-Cowboy now, but DaRon Bland returns at corner, as does second-year man Caelen Carson. Former first-round draft pick Kaiir Elam was also added during the offseason. Revel would have come off the boards much earlier- likely in the first round- if not for that ACL injury. If he's truly back to his previous football form, he should be under immediate consideration for serious playing time this season in Dallas and could end up being a third-round steal. Check out what a handful of the leading national outlets had to say about him in their pre-draft profiles. Dane Brugler, The Athletic Link A two-year starter at East Carolina, Revel was the boundary corner in former defensive coordinator Blake Harrell's quarters-based scheme. After grades forced him to go the junior college route out of high school, he drew East Carolina's attention and later emerged as an NFL prospect (17 passes defended and three interceptions over his final 15 college starts). Unfortunately, a knee injury sidelined him for most of his senior season and the pre-draft process, which kept him from testing or working out for NFL teams before the draft. With his size, speed and physicality, Revel changed East Carolina's approach on defense, because of his press-man skill set — he uses his length to disrupt routes and explosiveness to stay attached. Though he does a great job playing through the hands of receivers, he is guilty of grabbing and holding too much, especially in off coverage. That issue should continue to fade as he hones his technique in the NFL. Overall, his durability will be questioned, understandably, but Revel is a boundary bully with terrific speed, length and ball-tracking skills. He has the talent of an NFL starter. Kyle Crabbs, The 33rd Team Link East Carolina cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. is an absolute dog. This is an uber-physical cornerback who dictates terms in every phase of the position — be that as a run support player on the edge, a tackler at the catch point in rally opportunities to the football, or playing press coverage or at the catch point. Revel Jr. has the length, transitional quickness, and long-speed blend to be an alpha cornerback at the NFL level. He is coming off of an ACL tear suffered in practice for the Pirates in September of 2024, but provided the medicals check out, should be considered not just one of the top cornerback prospects eligible for the 2025 NFL Draft but one of the top defensive talents on the board period. Ian Cummings, Pro Football & Sports Network Link Shavon Revel Jr. has a combination of height, length, and speed that you just can't teach at the cornerback position. His physical tools alone would get him on the radar of NFL teams, but he maximizes well with a high football IQ. Revel can read and mirror route concepts well, and he's able to process and act on break angles in zone. His ball-tracking skills and long arms amount to exemplary playmaking chops, just as his length, along with his physicality, enables him to dictate in press-man coverage. Revel wasn't always tested to the highest degree by his competition in college, and he's also coming off a torn ACL. Those two factors muddy his projection somewhat. That said, Revel is reported to be on track for a full recovery, and assuming he is, he's one of the highest-ceiling CB prospects in the class. NFL Draft Buzz Link The NFL projection for Revel is fascinating - you're betting on traits and character as much as production. His combination of size, speed, and physicality screams starting boundary corner in a press-heavy scheme. The injury complicates his immediate impact, but smart money says he'll be worth the fit will be crucial - he needs to land with a team that plays to his strengths early while he develops his zone feel. Think Seattle, New York Jets, or Baltimore - defenses that let their corners challenge receivers at the line and aren't afraid to leave them on we were looking at a potential top-15 selection. The ACL tear likely pushes him into Day 2, but don't be shocked if a team still pulls the trigger late in Round 1. You simply can't teach his combination of length, speed, and competitive fire. The medicals will tell the tale, but if he checks out, some defensive coordinator is going to have a field day molding him into a CB1. Lance Zierlein, Link Big, long and fast are the physical descriptors that stand out for the East Carolina corner. Revel is leggy when matching press release but he's disruptive once he gets his hands on the wideout. He plays upright in man coverage, tends to allow small pockets of separation due to his high center of gravity and still needs improvement when it comes to finding and defending the deep ball, despite his ability to stay in phase with vertical routes. He has ideal length and good vision from zone, and he should continue to improve in that coverage with more experience. Revel suffered a torn ACL in September, but his measurables, explosiveness and upside give him a good chance to become an early starter. Cowboys News Headlines: Confusion over Parsons progress; Mel Kiper Jr. sticks with RB pick

Cowboys News Headlines: Confusion over Parsons progress; Mel Kiper Jr. sticks with RB pick The next big item on the Cowboys' offseason to-do list should be securing Micah Parsons to a long-term deal. That process is well underway in Dallas... or maybe not... depending on who you ask. We've got the latest on what's being reported about the progress on a Parsons megacontract. Elsewhere, the mock drafts are leaning toward running back help for Dallas, including draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. doubling down on the same ballcarrier he picked for the Cowboys previously. But there are also multiple wide receivers to consider at some point, late-round backfield options worth looking at, and a big glaring hole front and center in the defensive line. We've got another ex-Cowboy dragging the organization, a former NFL QB explaining how to help Dak Prescott, and Rico Dowdle not taking the bait in an interview in Carolina. All that, plus Rodney Peete is back in the sports headlines for a baseball highlight; we'll look back at how he was in the background of several huge moments in Cowboys history. Conflicting reports emerge regarding whether Cowboys, Micah Parsons are talking :: ProFootballTalk Link WFAA's Mike Leslie has reported that Parsons and the team have held discussions as recently as Tuesday. NFL Network's Jane Slater says nothing is close and that "meaningful talks haven't even begun yet." Clarence Hill Jr. of All City DLLS seconded that. So the waiting continues. $100 million CB who Cowboys traded as rook says they 'don't make a lot of good decisions' :: Cowboys Wire Link The Cowboys signed Charvarius Ward as an undrafted free agent in 2018 but then traded him away to the Chiefs for an offensive lineman who ended up never playing a single snap for the team. "I was strappin' all them boys," the cornerback recalled of his brief stay in Cowboys' camp. "I thought I was gonna make the team with Dallas, but Dallas don't make a lot of good decisions, so they ended up trading me to Kansas City, which was the best thing to happen to me." Ward has been an every-season starter since 2019, made a Pro Bowl with San Francisco, and has earned over $100 million in contracts, including his new three-year deal with the Colts. He's definitely one that got away. Will Cowboys use early NFL draft pick to help Dak Prescott? Mel Kiper Jr. shares thoughts :: Dallas Morning News Link For the second time this mock season, Kiper likes the Cowboys to select North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton with the 12th overall pick. 'He's got the ability to run hard inside, run tough up the gut, and bounce it outside," the draft guru said. "He's got that burst." Kiper admitted that Arizona wideout Tetairoa McMillan could "very easily" be the call, too. 2-Round 2025 NFL Mock Draft: 3 QBs in the Top 10, Will Campbell falls, and Pittsburgh finds its new workhorse running back :: Pro Football Network Link This mock has the Cowboys opting for Ashton Jeanty instead of an offensive lineman in the first round, even if it's a case of flash over substance. With the 44th overall pick, they go defense and take Mississippi's terrifying edge rusher, Princely Umanmielen. Power Ranking the top running backs in the 2025 NFL draft :: Touchdown Wire Link You know Jeanty and Hampton and even TreVeyon Henderson. But names like Brashard Smith (SMU), Dylan Sampson (Tennessee), and Ollie Gordon II (Oklahoma State) are ones to watch, too. Even later in the draft, look for Auburn's Jarquez Hunter and Kansas State's DJ Giddens. Rico Dowdle sidesteps Cowboys controversy, calls Chuba Hubbard a 'baller' :: The Athletic Link The former Cowboys running back stayed away from making any DeMarcus Lawrence-like comments about his ex-teammates' chances moving forward. As for his new one-year trial situation in Carolina, he knows he'll be splitting time with Chuba Hubbard, just as he did in Dallas with Ezekiel Elliott last year. 'We were thinking more multiyear deal going into free agency, but it is what it is and it took a turn. I truly believe everything will work out how it's supposed to work out, though.' Ex-Pro Bowl, Super Bowl QB says Dallas Cowboys 'have to add pieces to help' Dak Prescott :: Fort Worth Star-Telegram Link Matt Ryan knows what it's like to be thought of as a good quarterback who's not quite good enough. Now with the broader perspective of a broadcaster, he has some ideas on how Dak Prescott can take that next step. 'It's about getting more shots in the playoffs. They have to give themselves more opportunities," Ryan said. "They have to add pieces to help him, too. They don't play in a vacuum,' Ryan said. 'You are depending on a lot of different variables. Does the line block? Do they have the players that will help in the passing game? You are depending on the defense getting stops." Dallas Cowboys scheduled to meet with contested catch specialist WR :: Link Memphis wide receiver Roc Taylor is scheduled to meet with the Cowboys in the coming weeks. He's an impressive big-bodied target who blew up for over 2,000 yards in his final two years with the Tigers. He's a raw talent, but his knack for contested catches could make him a late-round project worth considering for Dallas. Massive hole remains on Cowboys defense, demanding attention in 2025 NFL draft :: Cowboys Wire Link The offseason's additions have put together a fairly solid defensive line ahead of the 2025 season. But they still lack a true 1-tech D-tackle. Deploying journeymen and replacement-level players in the role has led to teams gashing the Cowboys in the run game. There are good options in the draft class, but it's going to take spending a top-75 pick to land a difference-maker. Draft Blog: Prospects to watch at Big 12 Pro Days :: The Mothership Link With the Big 12 teams holding joint pro days at Ford Center in Frisco beginning Wednesday, Cowboys staffers have a front-row seat for some top prospects. Watch out for cornerbacks like Mello Dotson (Kansas) or Jacob Parrish (Kansas Sate). And while Arizona running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt doesn't have the same clout as the year's elite ballcarriers, he has high upside should the Cowboys double-dip at the position or wait until later rounds. Rodney Peete's baseball catch has Cowboys fans recalling '94 stint with team :: Cowboys Wire Link The ex-NFLer shagging a pop foul in Tokyo during the Cubs-Dodgers season opener on Tuesday came as a surprise. But longtime Cowboys fans will recall that Peete was Troy Aikman's backup the year they tried for the Super Bowl threepeat. Peete got into seven games and started only one contest during his Dallas stint. Notably, it was his injury- combined with one to Aikman, as well- that gave a third-stringer named Jason Garrett the Thanksgiving start in one of the most memorable games in franchise history.

Former Cowboys star Dez Bryant rips team's 'stupid decisions,' doesn't expect success any time soon

The Dallas Cowboys have some decisions to make and find themselves in somewhat of a holding pattern. Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons cover half the team's salary cap, and Parsons could get a record-breaking contract this offseason. Parsons told Fox News Digital he would likely limit himself in training camp without a new deal. He probably won't be practicing, but with a new coach in charge, he does want to be in meetings. The Cowboys and head coach Mike McCarthy parted ways, and Brian Schottenheimer was promoted from the offensive coordinator's job. The Cowboys finished 12-5 three consecutive seasons before going 7-10 this season after Prescott missed a chunk of the season with a hamstring injury, and ex-Cowboy Dez Bryant is concerned about the team's future and the team's "stupid decisions." "I've been in that organization, so I'm looking at it from a different lens. They weren't pulling the plug or making moves to try to make the team better. That's when I knew things was going down for us," Bryant told Fox News Digital in a recent interview. "Then, after the season, McCarthy dipped, the process of bringing in these coaches — Jerry, Stephen — they didn't seem like they was too concerned. I don't know if it's a tank, going through the motions, getting something in the future. It's something." Bryant spoke with Fox News Digital in New Orleans, where he's looking to place some bets with Fanatics Sportsbook. "If I'm not mistaken, I think Kareem Hunt is +900 for the first touchdown. I like that. I like Kareem Hunt to score a touchdown, and I like DeVonta Smith to score a touchdown," Bryant said. Bryant will be using the book's FanCash to place his wagers, but it can also be used to buy merchandise through the Fanatics site. "They're running a hell of a program to keep these fans connected. … That's one of the reasons I love to be a part of this group. They're looking to do things the right way. They want to appeal to their fans. And that's what I love about Fanatics," Bryant added. Bryant sounded like he may also take the under on Cowboys wins next season. "I don't expect the 'Boys to be good for the next couple years. You need good role players, you need more star players, especially in today's NFL. Teams are loaded. You can't have just one receiver. You got teams with three ones, two ones. The Cowboys only got one one. And the rest might be threes. I don't see us getting better." he said. "It's not anything personal. It's just the writing on the wall." Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
