More info Basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal once found David Beckham's wallet on the ground and humorously threatened to charge a hefty fee for its return. The pair, who have been mates for quite some time, first crossed paths while Beckham was playing for LA Galaxy in Los Angeles. Shaq, an ex-LA Lakers star, admitted on The Late Late Show with James Corden that his initial impulse was to pocket the cash from the wallet he discovered in Beverly Hills. "I was walking one day in Beverly Hills and I found a wallet," the 53-year-old shared with a chuckle. "Usually when I find wallets, I just take all the money out and I just throw them," he quipped. "But this was a nice wallet." Upon realising the wallet belonged to Beckham after spotting his ID, Shaq decided to have a bit of fun with the football icon by pretending to demand payment. "First I played a joke," the towering athlete recounted. "I was like, 'I have your wallet, it's going to cost you a million dollars to get it back'. But he knew it was me. [Beckham said] 'Shaq, stop playing'. I was like 'Dave, I found your wallet'. The amusing part is he [Beckham] said, 'There was some money in this wallet, you know what happened?' And I was like, 'Nope.'", reports the Mirror. Having hung up his basketball boots in 2012, Shaq remains one of the game's most celebrated players. Standing at an imposing 7ft 1in, he clinched four NBA championships – three with the Lakers during the Kobe Bryant era and another with the Miami Heat. In 2000, he was recognised as NBA MVP and made 15 All-Star appearances throughout a remarkable career that also saw him play for the Orlando Magic, the Phoenix Suns, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics. Beckham hung up his boots in 2013, a year after O'Neal, having played for top-tier clubs such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and PSG. He also donned the England jersey 115 times and served as captain for six years. Although now residing in the UK with his wife Victoria, Beckham frequently jets across the pond. He holds part-ownership of MLS team Inter Miami, who caused a stir in 2023 by securing Lionel Messi's signature.
