Quincy man guilty of 1st degree murder, killing Dorchester man in 2019 shooting

A Quincy man was found guilty of fatally shooting a Dorchester man in June 2019, Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden's office said. Lalance Smith, 35, was also found guilty of armed robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm while in the commission of a felony, possession of ammunition and possession of a loaded firearm. Another person involved in the incident that ended in the death of Arnold Woodrum, 59, of Dorchester, named Kiniya Lee, 40, was sentenced to four to six years in state prison after a guilty plea. At around 3 a.m. on June 14, 2019, Lee called Woodrum to tell him that she was coming over to his apartment at 107 Devon St., Hayden's office said. Woodrum asked someone to let Lee and Smith inside. Woodrum did not know Smith. After they were let inside, Lee went into Woodrum's room and said 'I'm sorry' several times, the statement read. Smith followed Lee into the room, pointed a silver revolver at Woodrum. 'What's up, give me the bag, give me the money, give me something,' Woodrum said before he handed Smith a bag and said, 'take it, take it.' Then there was a struggle and several shots were heard, Hayden's office said. Woodrum then ran down the hall into a bathroom and collapsed. He was shot in his chest and back. 'After examining all the evidence and listening to all the testimony the jury came back with a decision that we think is proper and justified,' Hayden said in the statement. 'I thank the jurors for their work, and I'm grateful for the efforts by prosecutors, investigators and victim-witness advocates to secure a measure of justice for the family and friends of Arnold Woodrum.' Mass. felon sentenced for causing explosion at home, owning over 30 firearms

A North Andover man was sentenced to 63 months, or five years, in prison for possessing over 30 firearms and explosives as a convicted felon, United States Attorney Leah Foley's office said. The sentence of Daniel Medina, 65, will be followed by three years of supervised release, Foley's office said in a statement. Medina pleaded guilty in December 2024 to unlawful possession of a machine gun, unlawful possession of explosive materials and being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition. On July 1, 2024, law enforcement learned of a reported explosion in the area of Medina's North Andover home, Foley's office said. Two vehicles were found damaged, along with a piece of mail addressed to Medina. All the debris 'were consistent with common items used in manufacturing homemade explosive devices,' including ball bearings and shrapnel, the statement read. Witnesses saw Medina running from the damaged cars after the explosion, the statement read. Investigators searched Medina's home and found more than 32 firearms, including 12 firfles, 15 pistols, three shotguns and two antique firearms, Foley's office said. Law enforcement also found 9,000 rounds of different types of ammunition manufactured outside Massachusetts, 75 magazines, various gun parts, a Glock switch device, books on how to build guns and explosives, shrapnel accessories, firework containers and containers of powders. Some of these powders included potassium chlorate and aluminum powder, both of which were found in the explosion outside Medina's home, Foley's office said. Because Medina was convicted of assault and battery in Lawrence District Court and sentenced to two and a half years in jail in 2002, he was prohibited from owning firearms, ammunition and explosive materials. Authorities ID man arrested after pepper spray incident shut down Woburn court

Authorities identified the suspect involved in a pepper spray incident in the lobby of the Woburn courthouse on Monday morning. Nicholas Akerberg was identified by the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office as the person arrested after the incident. He is expected to be arraigned virtually on Tuesday at 2 p.m., a spokesperson said. Woburn Police Chief Robert Rufo Jr. described him as a 28-year-old from Yarmouth Port, according to WCVB. He wore a gas mask and used pepper spray in the courthouse, according to Rufo. 'He began spraying indoors of the courthouse. He was subsequently subdued, arrested and transported to the hospital. Charges are being determined currently,' Rufo told the TV station. The incident closed the courthouse shortly before noon, but it is scheduled to reopen at 2 p.m., according to the court's website. The Woburn District Court's website lists several probable disposition hearings scheduled for Monday morning for Akerberg related to various cases. Rufo told WCVB Akerberg was due in court due to a case that originated in Stoneham over a year ago. It's not immediately clear if there were any injuries reported due to the incident. A witness said that a court officer told people to evacuate the court and that 'It was very scary,' according to WCVB. A second witness told the TV station that 'it was like a stampede of people running out the back door' and that someone was pepper-sprayed in the lobby.
