Bengaluru stampede: Police were not in favour of RCB felicitation event, claims report

IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory celebration at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday turned tragic as a stampede broke out outside the iconic venue, leaving 11 dead and several more injured. read more Police officers make way for an ambulance following a stampede at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Reuters What was supposed to be a joyous occasion for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and its fans turned tragic, with a stampede breaking out at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru where a massive crowd had gathered to watch Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar and the rest of the team celebrate the franchise's maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title. The tragic incident left 11 dead and reportedly 47 injured and has cast a shadow on RCB's historic six-run victory over Punjab Kings in the IPL final that took place in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, less than 24 hours before the stampede at the Chinnaswamy. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Bengaluru Police reportedly weren't in favour of felicitation event The franchise has since put out a statement offering its condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede, with batting star Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma and others such as ex-RCB star AB de Villiers expressing shock and grief over the tragedy. The stampede has also sparked a political battle, with the Bharatiya Janata Party – the party that has been in power at the Centre since 2014 – slamming Chief Minister Siddaramaiah as well as the Congress government that has been in power in Karnataka since May 2023. RCB were initially supposed to go on a bus parade from the Vidhana Soudha, the seat of the Karnataka legislature in Bengaluru, to the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The parade, however, was ultimately cancelled and the celebrations were limited to the Chinnaswamy, RCB's home ground. And as per communication between the Siddaramaiah government and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) that has been accessed by CNN-News18, Bengaluru Police were not in favour of hosting a felicitation ceremony at the Vidhana Soudha. The KSCA had on 3 June, the day of the IPL final, written to the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) seeking permission to host a felicitation event at the grand steps of the Vidhana Soudha if RCB emerged victorious. The DPAR, in turn, asked the city police for their opinion on such a proposal, and the latter reportedly replied in the negative. Police sources also told news agency Press Trust of India that despite them making it clear that no bus parade would take place and that only those with valid tickets would be allowed to enter the Chinnaswamy, a huge crowd gathered outside the stadium to catch a glimpse of Kohli and the rest of the RCB team. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD CM Siddaramaiah, who claimed that over 2-3 lakh people had turned up for the felicitation event, has since ordered an investigation, with a report expected to be prepared in 15 days' time.

Watch: Virat Kohli Recreates KL Rahul's Kantara Celebration After RCB's Win, Teases DC Star

Virat Kohli responded to KL Rahul's Kantara celebration in a funny manner after his team Royal Challengers Bengaluru registered a six-wicket win over Delhi Capitals in their IPL 2025 match at Arun Jaitely Stadium on Sunday. Notably, DC had defeated RCB on the latter's home ground - M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru - on April 10. Leading DC to victory in the game, wicketkeeper-batter Rahul had hogged limelight for the celebration he did after hitting the winning runs. It was a celebration inspired by the movie 'Kantara', he later revealed in a video. Kantara is a 2022 Kannada movie starring Rishabh Shetty, Sapthami Gowda and Achyuth Kumar. Being a Karnataka player, KL has played bulk of his domestic cricket at M Chinnnaswammy Stadium and even played two IPL seasons for RCB, in 2013 and 2016. After playing a crucial role in DC's win over RCB at Bengaluru, KL, seen as a reserved and calm personality on the field, was extremely animated, thumping his chest and pointing towards the ground and at his jersey as if saying that it (M Chinnaswammy Stadium) is his. He was also seen tapping his bat on the ground. Kohli, who himself hails from Delhi and represents the state in domestic cricket, recreated the celebration at Arun Jaitely Stadium after RCB beat DC on Sunday. However, the ex-RCB captain did it only to tease Rahul, who also ended up laughing over Kohli's act. Watch it here: kohli — S A K T H I ! (@Classic82atMCG_) April 27, 2025 RCB clinched the top spot in the IPL 2025 points table with the win over DC at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Chasing 163 for the win, Krunal Pandya slammed a 47-ball 73 not out as RCB achieved the target with nine balls to spare. Virat Kohli also hit his sixth half-century of the season to claim the Orange Cap. He scored 51 off 47 balls to continue his red-hot form with the bat. Axar Patel returned figures of 2 for 19 in his quota of four overs but it went in vain. In batting, for DC, KL Rahul top-scored with a 39-ball 41 but the side lost wickets at regular intervals before Tristan Stubbs' 18-ball 34 lifted them to a competitive total of 162 for 8. Bhuveshwar Kumar (3/33) and Josh Hazlewood (2/36) snapped five wicekts among them, while Krunal Pandya (1/28) and Yash Dayal (1/42) accounted for one wicket each.

RCB's INR 5.75 Cr mega auction purchase impresses Virat Kohli: ‘Today was his day. We were waiting for him…'

RCB got their third-straight win on the trot on Sunday, and also climbed to top of the IPL 2025 points table. On Sunday, the Rajat Patidar-led side defeated Rishabh Pant's DC, in New Delhi, winning by six wickets. Krunal Pandya was the star performer at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, as the all-rounder shone with both bat and ball with a match-winning performance. Chasing 163 runs, RCB cruised to 165/4 in 18.3 overs courtesy of Krunal's unbeaten knock of 73* runs off 47 deliveries. The India international also smacked five fours and four sixes, maintaining a 155.32 strike rate. Meanwhile, he also returned with figures of 1/28 in the first innings, taking the wicket of ex-RCB skipper Faf du Plessis. Krunal was purchased for ₹5.75 Crores during the mega-auction last year, from a base price of ₹2 Crores. Speaking after the match, Virat Kohli hailed Krunal's impact and revealed that the entire team was waiting for such a performance from the all-rounder. 'Whenever there is a chase on I keep checking with the dugout if we are on course, what is my role etc. Krunal.. today was his day. We were waiting for him to come into the tournament with the bat. Who are the bowlers to target', he said. 'I try and ensure I don't stop my singles and doubles and combine with the occasional boundary. This year you can't just come out and hit, you have to assess, understand the conditions and then plan accordingly. We have communicated beautifully as a team in the batting and that's the reason we have 7 wins out of 10. 'It's looking good for us. We have Romario (Shepherd) after Tim (David) as well for extra added power. That firepower at the back end definitely helps. Hazlewood and Bhuvi are world class bowlers. There's a reason why he has the Purple Cap on his head. Krunal bowled well too. Don't forget that Suyash can be the dark horse as well. He may not have got the wickets but he has been good,' he added. Kohli is also the current Orange Cap leader with 443 runs in 10 matches, ahead of second-placed Suryakumar Yadav (427 runs). Meanwhile, RCB pacer Josh Hazlewood has climbed to top of the Purple Cap race with 18 wickets in 10 matches.

Ex-India Star's Appeal To Virat Kohli: "Account Needs To Be Settled For KL Rahul's Kantara Celebration"

Delhi Capitals (DC) wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul's celebration following the side's win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in an IPL 2025 match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium went viral in no time. The celebration from Rahul was inspired by the movie 'Kantara', he later revealed in a video. The way he says 'This is mine' — Delhi Capitals (@DelhiCapitals) April 11, 2025 As RCB play DC again, now on the latter's home ground, former India player Aakash Chopra has urged ex-RCB captain and current batter Virat Kohli to settle the account. "Who told you to come here as a stranger, to come to this ground as a guest? You are the only one who has been given this place's reign. This is your kingdom, you should come here as the king. We want to bring that feeling for Kohli as the account needs to be settled for KL Rahul's Kantara celebration in Bengaluru," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel. "Virat Kohli will be in Delhi, and Delhi is Kohli's. However, Kohli will have to make a circle and say that this is his ground. It is an important match for both teams. Whoever wins, I would say, will have one foot in for qualification, as you need to win eight games only. So you will be almost there, and RCB don't lose away matches," he added. DC are set to host RCB at Arun Jaitley Stadium in their reverse fixture on Sunday. RCB hold the third spot in the table with 12 points to their credit, while DC are at the second position with as many points but a better net run rate. The winner of the game between the teams on Sunday will get closer to the playoffs.
