El Salvador president threatens to send imprisoned gangsters to Paris Fashion Week

El Salvador's president said he would send inmates of the country's notorious mega-prison to France in the wake of a Paris Fashion Week show critiquing the government's treatment of the prisoners. Nayib Bukele criticised a collection debuted by Willy Chavarria, a Mexican-American designer, featuring models wearing outfits resembling inmate uniforms at El Salvador's Terrorism Confinement Center (Cecot). The maximum-security prison was opened in 2023 on the orders of Mr Bukele as part of his war against organised crime, but human rights groups have raised concerns about poor conditions and a lack of due process. Responding to a message online saying Mr Chavarria's show was a tribute to Cecot prisoners, the El Salvador president wrote: 'We're ready to ship them all to Paris whenever we get the green light from the French government.' Mr Bukele's press team said the president's response showed his 'firm stance against the attempt to glorify criminality'. Mr Chavarria's Paris Fashion Week show opened with 35 men walking down the runway wearing white T-shirts and shorts that had been made in partnership with the American Civil Liberties Union. The models then dropped into kneeling positions with their heads bowed, recalling images which emerged from El Salvador in the months after the government adopted a harsher approach to gangs. Others wore T-shirts emblazoned with the word 'America' upside-down, which fashion critics speculated was a commentary on Mr Chavarria's belief the country is moving backwards. The designer also sent invitations for his Spring 2026 show in the form of replica immigration summons, with the documents certifying readers' 'right to exist', before asking them to attend for a 'presentation of humanity'. Tens of thousands of suspected gang members have been rounded up and incarcerated in El Salvador since a state of emergency was declared in March 2022 following a spike in murders and violent crimes. Hailing the success of the crackdown, the country's government reported that the homicide rate fell by nearly 70 per cent in 2023. However, concerns have been raised about conditions inside Cecot, as well as the possibility that some of those imprisoned may be innocent of gang involvement. Human Rights Watch claimed inmates were denied communication with relatives or lawyers, with reports claiming prisoners only leave their cells for 30 minutes a day. Alongside roughly 15,000 domestic prisoners, Cecot also holds more than 200 Venezuelans deported from the United States, accused of being members of the Tren de Aragua criminal gang. The Trump administration paid Mr Bukele's government millions of dollars to lock up the migrants, claiming they were criminals and gang members. Donald Trump invoked little-used wartime legislation in March to fly the migrants to El Salvador without court hearings. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. Kim Kardashian to Testify About Robbery Ordeal at Paris Trial

Kim Kardashian, the reality TV star and entrepreneur, is scheduled to testify on Tuesday in Paris court, where she will face the so-called 'grandpa robbers' who are accused of violently stealing from her in the French capital nearly a decade ago. Ms. Kardashian is expected to explain how she was gagged, bound with tape and zip ties, and robbed at gunpoint at a residence she rented during Paris Fashion Week in October 2016. Ms. Kardashian, 44, has described in previous interviews the trauma she suffered when men dressed as police officers and wearing balaclavas burst into the property and stole valuables, including a $4 million diamond engagement ring. But her appearance in court on Tuesday will mark the only time that she is expected to take the stand and face the men accused of robbing her. From dawn, scores of journalists and curious onlookers hoping to catch a glimpse of Ms. Kardashian had lined up to get into the courtroom to sit in the public gallery. Under French law, cameras are not allowed in the court. Theo Chbouki, an 18-year-old fashion student in the line, said that it was his first time attending a criminal trial and that he was curious to see Ms. Kardashian in a 'serious' real-life setting, without the glossy veneer of social media or reality TV. 'It's iconic to see Kim Kardashian at a trial in Paris,' he said. Several of the defendants in the trial — nine men and one woman — are in their 60s and 70s, and have been described by prosecutors as career criminals. Some have been charged with armed robbery in an organized gang, kidnapping and other charges. Others have been accused of complicity or of lesser charges. The trial, which will be decided by three judges and a six-person jury, is set to last until the end of May. Most of the accused have denied involvement in the robbery. At the time, the stolen jewelry was estimated to be worth at least 8 million euros, or over $9 million. 'I think that moment changed her life forever,' Simone Harouche, a friend of Ms. Kardashian who was her fashion stylist at the time, told the court on Tuesday. Ms. Harouche testified that Ms. Kardashian had upgraded her private security after the robbery and changed her habits on social media, where she has hundreds of millions of followers. Prosecutors believe that the thieves targeted Ms. Kardashian because she had displayed some of her jewelry online. 'Nothing that she posts is in real time anymore,' Ms. Harouche said. Ms. Harouche was the only other person in the residence with the reality TV star that night, and recalled falling asleep in the evening until she was startled awake by Ms. Kardashian screaming that she had children and that she wanted to live. 'It was a sound that I had never heard from Kim — it was terror,' said Ms. Harouche, whose room was a floor below Ms. Kardashian's. She recalled how the distraught celebrity hopped down the stairs, her ankles tied with tape, once the thieves had left. 'She was beside herself,' Ms. Harouche added. 'I've never seen her like this before.' Investigators found DNA on the tape and zip ties that were used to bind Ms. Kardashian's hands and feet, and the police arrested several suspects after three months of wiretaps and surveillance.
