Quarter of Brits skip breakfast due to lack of time, options and wanting a bigger lunch, survey shows

A QUARTER of Brits skip breakfast most days – citing a lack of options, limited time, and a preference for a bigger lunch. A new survey shows that people are more likely to skip their first meal on weekdays, and that Millennials eat breakfast the least out of any generation. 2 2 A poll of 2,000 adults found 34 per cent of those who skip breakfast do so because they don't have enough time in the morning. While 13 per cent go without because they opt to have a large lunch instead and 12 per cent because they have nothing in their cupboards to eat. And when they don't manage to eat first thing, on average they won't eat until midday. However, 43 per cent are less likely to avoid breakfast at the weekends, with 29 per cent of those eat breakfast admitting they like to go all out at that time of the week. This is especially the case for Millennials (44 per cent) who do this more than any other generation – just ahead of Gen Zs (35 per cent). A spokesperson for McDonald's UK, which commissioned the research and has launched its first-ever Breakfast Saver Menu trial across 332 restaurants, featuring Sausage Sandwich and Saver Bacon Roll options, said: 'It's widely regarded as the most important meal of the day, yet it often gets neglected. 'This is understandable as we might wake up with good intentions only for them to fall by the wayside. 'Life moves fast – especially it seems, first thing in the morning when you need to get out and away without delay.' It emerged 57 per cent have woken up with the intention of having breakfast but failing to do so. Again, lack of time is a factor (47 per cent), along with not feeling hungry (34 per cent), not wanting what's in their cupboards (14 per cent). As many as 37 per cent eat the same thing for breakfast everyday – with 28 per cent enjoying a variety. However, 44 per cent 'like' the idea of switching things up. Overall, the most popular options are cereal (48 per cent), toast (47 per cent), and fruit (26 per cent). And the overwhelming majority of those who eat breakfast enjoy it – with 47 per cent of the opinion it's the most important meal of the day. While 43 per cent went as far as describing their meal choices as 'exciting', although 47 per cent feel differently, describing their go-to breakfasts as 'not exciting.' Carried out through OnePoll, the research found 58 per cent typically have breakfast at home but 22 per cent 'crave' a breakfast they can't make at home. A spokesperson for McDonald's UK added: 'Breakfast doesn't have to be something you mindlessly eat just for the sake of it. 'Even when you're in a rush it can still be something nice – and it doesn't need to cost the earth.'

Beloved Fast Food Chain Makes Telling Move After Closing Hundreds of Locations

Last month, beloved West Coast fast food chain Jack in the Box announced that it would be closing hundreds of locations around the country, but the chain made a telling move that highlights the chain's long-term plans. Back in April, Jack in the Box announced plans to close about 150 or 200 of its "underperforming restaurants" across the country. "Jack in the Box will implement a block closure program, which is projected to result in the closure of approximately 150-200 underperforming restaurants — a majority of which have been in the system for over three decades," the company wrote in a press release on April 23, 2025. "The program will consist of approximately 80-120 restaurant closures between now and 12/31/2025, with the remaining underperforming restaurants closing thereafter based upon respective franchise agreement termination dates," the restaurant chain's press release continued. While closures of this magnitude and scale don't often paint an optimistic picture for businesses going forward, it seems like Jack in the Box is not merely closing locations, but it is also planning expansion. According to a report from Bob Vitale of The Columbus Dispatch, Jack in the Box is planning expansion throughout Ohio. "The company that owns the 74-year-old restaurant chain already has come to Powell and Whitehall with its other brand, Del Taco. A Jack in the Box representative told The Dispatch that it's seeking new locations for both, though, in the Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Dayton areas," Vitale wrote for The Columbus Dispatch this week. This is a telling move from the fast food chain as it indicates that despite the recent plans to close hundreds of locations, the chain still has expansion plans, which will be good news for its fans and customers. McDonald's new site on A2 near Canterbury gets approval

Plans for a new drive-through McDonald's on a main road in Kent have been approved despite some residents' claims there was "no need" for fast-food chain tabled plans to launch at the A2 London-bound Gate Services at Dunkirk, between Faversham and Canterbury, on the site of a former Travelodge 79-seat eatery will be next to an existing Costa Borough Council's planning committee voted on Thursday to approve the plans, with 10 councillors in favour and four against. Charlie Brown, acting as a planning agent for McDonald's, implored the committee to back the proposals, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. "The application will help redevelop a brownfield site, enhancing the existing service area, creating over 100 new jobs across a range of full and part time roles," he Faversham resident Sarah Moakes said the site would "attract horrendous traffic, especially at tea-time" and would be a "magnet for antisocial behaviour".Councillor Rich Lehmann said: "Whilst new jobs are welcome we must also consider whether this employment genuinely offsets the potential negative impact on existing local businesses – especially independent food outlets in Faversham."Councillor Ben Martin said: "Based on what we have here I cannot see a reason to reject which would stand up to the scrutiny of an inspector."

Why hundreds of Aussies are queuing outside little-known shop: 'Worth the hype'

Hundreds of diners have been queuing outside an unassuming shop in Sydney to be the first in the country to taste the wildly popular menu items. Wingstop, a US buffalo chicken wing fast food chain, has expanded into Australia, opening its first flagship store in Kings Cross over the weekend. The chain is best known for its sticky, sweet and spicy wings coated in 12 different flavours, seasoned fries and signature dipping sauces - including ranch and bleu cheese. Heavy rain and wind didn't deter Aussies, as more than 1,000 customers flocked to the new outlet on opening day on Saturday, with the line stretching down the road and around the corner. And the crowd on Sunday was no different, with hundreds braving the cold to wait in line - including some who stood in the queue for up to three hours. One fan, eager to get their hands on the famous wings, camped outside the store from 2am on Saturday - nine hours before the doors opened. 'I have been waiting for weeks for Wingstop to open. I walked past the store three weeks ago and saw the sign and have been hanging out to try it ever since,' the customer said. 'It exceeded my expectations, I'll be coming back again and again, especially for the hot honey.' A woman who was forth in line had flown all the way from Melbourne just to be part of Wingstop's launch. Those who were lucky to get a taste of the wings were impressed. 'Got a feed on launch day, despite the wait OMFG it was so worth it. Got the hot honey boneless pieces and lemon pepper boneless. I think I died and went to heaven. Will 100 per cent be coming back on the reg. Staff were legends too,' one raved. 'Best wings ever! Have been waiting forever for wing stop to get to Australia and it did not disappoint. Spicy Korean for the win,' one said. 'My best friend and I waited in the line for 45 minutes but we would have waited all day and night for Wingstop. That first bite of the Mango Habanero boneless wing was heaven - this is going to be a weekly ritual,' another added. Aussies who tried Wingstop overseas confirmed it tastes just as good Down Under. 'I was so scared that the ranch wasn't going to be as good as the US... but the Aussie one is so much better. The wings are amazing - the ranch dip, the flavours, the tang, the spice! I already have mad cravings for it again. Definitely worth the wait and hype 11/10,' one shared. 'The first time I had Wingstop I was in the US and have been dreaming of it coming here ever since. Louisiana Rub is where it's at! And I can't get enough of their ranch sauce, it's a must try,' another revealed. 'I've been waiting for this for so long. I had Wingstop back in the Philippines. Now it's here in Kings Cross where I live, too. Garlic Parmesan is one of the best. The ranch sauce is a must. Once you order wings, you have to have the sauce,' one added. The launch in Sydney is just the beginning for Wingstop, with more than 100 locations planned to roll out across Australia in the coming years. Loved for its classic and boneless wings and tenders - all hand sauced-and-tossed in bold flavours - the brand is set to become a nationwide craving. The 12 wing flavours include Lemon Pepper, Hickory Smoked BBQ, Hawaiian, Garlic Parmesan, Louisiana Rub, Spicy Korean Q, Mild, Hot Honey Rub, Cajun, OG and Mango Habanero, with Atomic taking the hottest spot. The menu features signature sides including fresh-cut, seasoned fries and freshly-made ranch and bleu cheese dips.
