Local florists facing new challenges ahead of Mother's Day 2025
Local florists are blossoming into superheroes as they scramble to make arrangements for the special mom in your life. The usual holiday rush isn't the only challenge these shops are facing. The new thorn in their side is increased tariffs. Work set to start on massive mixed-use Harborcreek project Mother's Day is quickly approaching, and many people have been preparing to surprise the moms in their lives with the perfect gift. That gift wouldn't be complete without a beautiful, blossoming floral arrangement to make mom happy. 'It's not always about how big you get it's that you got them something, you took time to think about them,' said Darlene Alfieri, the owner of Floral Expressions by Darlene. 'Mom wants to be noticed.' Alfieri and her crew started to prepare for their hundreds of orders last monday. Pioneer Day at local school aims to bring history to life They have to receive, process and hydrate the flowers as well as get vases and other supplies ready. Alfieri has been arranging flowers for years, but said this Mother's Day is different. She didn't expect their usual high demand as she and the rest of the industry had watched prices rise due to tariffs. 'We source as much as we can that is grown here in the us, but that is a very limited amount. Our glassware from China, that's costing us,' Alfieri explained. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Alfieri has not raised her prices just yet, but said there's a possibility down the road. The same goes for Allburn Florist who receive plants from Canada that are shipped through South America. 'And they're hard to figure out because every place has different tariffs. We have been holding our price as best we can, but they fluctuate almost every week,' said Melissa Roberts, manager & wedding specialist for Allburn Florist. On top of Mother's Day, staff at Allburn's is providing arrangements for all three college graduations this weekend as well as some proms. Here at Allburns they've developed a very specific floral assembly line to keep up with their orders. Lawrence Park polling station will not be handicap accessible this election 'I have designers in the back that are solely making beautiful arrangements, then I have counter staff up front. They're wrapping flowers that if you want to take with you and they can tell you how to take care of a plant,' Roberts explained. 'Use a local florist website. You will get a better arrangement, higher quality and more for your money,' Alfieri said. 'When you're ordering on the internet oftentimes you are paying excess fees that don't make it into your arrangement. Call your local florists.' Both shops said that they will be cutting off delivery, so the sooner you have your order in, the better. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
