AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – The Regional Tibetan Association of Massachusetts is observing the 66th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising. Dozens of arrests, medical transports after 'Blarney Blowout' at UMass Several events will be held on Monday beginning at Amherst Town Hall at 9:00 a.m. Town council members will read a proclamation, and the 'Walk for Tibet' will follow, an eight-mile peace march from Amherst to Northampton. The proclamation will be read at Northampton City Hall at 2:30 p.m. and Easthampton City Hall at 4:30 p.m. The Tibetan Flag will also be raised at each location. The origins of this day go back to March 10, 1959, when over 300,000 Tibetans surrounded the Norbulingka Palace in Lhasa to prevent the Chinese Army from abducting His Holiness the Dalai Lama, according to Regional Tibetan Association of Massachusetts. By March 17, His Holiness the Dalai Lama was forced to flee into exile in India, while the Chinese People's Liberation Army unleashed a crackdown on Lhasa, killing thousands and destroying countless Buddhist monasteries.
