Anne Hathaway Honored André Leon Talley and Carolina Herrera's Friendship at the 2025 Met Gala
In the July 1981 issue of Interview Magazine , André Leon Talley became the first-ever journalist to interview Carolina Herrera after she launched her namesake label. Tonight, at the 2025 Met Gala, Anne Hathaway wears a sartorial expression of their decades-long friendship, as interpreted by Carolina Herrera's creative director, Wes Gordon. 'There are few figures who exemplify the constant pursuit of beauty and perfection better than André. He was one of Carolina Herrera's best friends, and it was an honor to have met him and spent time with him,' Gordon tells Vogue. 'I will think of him when we walk onto the steps at the Metropolitan Museum on Monday, where he was always perched and delighting in all the looks.'Gordon turned to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) for help crafting Hathaway's look. SCAD—the keeper of Talley's personal archive–gave the Herrera team unfettered access to their collection to help the designer fit the night's Tailored for You dress code. Gordon was drawn to the white button-down shirts Talley wore underneath his signature double-breasted suits. In keeping with the house codes, the shirt also nods to Herrera's famous preference for the button-up. Gordon fashioned the actor a black-and-white striped column skirt—another Herrera house code—embellished with 200,000 beads and rhinestones over 910 hours, worn with a white cotton button-up shirt tied at the waist, and black pointy-toe mules. She added a show-stopping diamond and sapphire necklace to her look for some extra sparkle. This isn't the first time Anne Hathaway used her Met Gala look to pay homage to a fashion titan. In 2023, she teamed up with Versace to honour both Karl Lagerfeld and Gianni Versace. Tonight, at the 2025 Met Gala, she gives an ode to another one of the greats. Staying true to the Tailored for You dress code, Cardi went with her twist on modern-day dandyism: She chose intricate Burberry suiting by designer Daniel Lee as a nod to the new spring exhibition, titled 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.' 'For Cardi's look, we liked the idea of a tailored, feminine dandy,' Lee tells Vogue. 'Cardi gives main character energy, and her look reflects this.' The star wore a green, floor-length embroidered coat with an open back—and it was certainly worthy of the spotlight. Cardi styled the coat over a silk devoré shirt with a ruffled collar and cuffs, and enriched the look with a silk satin cummerbund. She wore green velvet jacquard tailored trouser in a floral vine to match. 'We looked at Victorian dress and corsetry,' Lee says of the inspration. 'There was one particular image we found of an emerald green gown from the 19th century: The back of the gown had a circular cut out which, for the time, would have been controversial. We liked this idea of non-conformity, keeping with the spirit of Dandyism.' The striking ensemble also served as a continuation of a recent fall 2025 womenswear look from the label. 'The collection was about eccentric characters, and a sense of nobility and extravagance,' says Lee, adding it felt like a fitting nod. 'The tailored coat was made using green baroque velvet damask, similar to something you would see in an old British stately home.' The hand-sewn beading, meanwhile, was just as ornate. 'We love how this moves when Cardi walks,' says Lee.
