7.30's Political Editor Laura Tingle to become ABC's new Global Affairs Editor

The ABC's 7.30 Political Editor Laura Tingle is leaving the current affairs program after six years to take up a new position as Global Affairs Editor, the broadcaster has announced. Tingle, a Walkley-Award-winning journalist, will take up the post mid-year, joining a network of foreign correspondents, the Asia Pacific Newsroom and Foreign Correspondent staff. As one of Australia's most highly respected journalists, Tingle takes over from John Lyons who was announced as the ABC's new Americas Editor in February. As Global Affairs Editor, Lyons, a former editor of The Sydney Morning Herald, reported heavily from the Middle East after the October 7 attacks and from inside Iran for Four Corners. Laura Tingle, pictured on the set of 7.30, is a respected political journalist of more than 40 years. Tingle said she was "exceptionally excited" to use her skills to report on global events "around the world that also shape our nation". "I started my journalistic career at a time when Australia and the world were being challenged and transformed by the forces of deregulation and the freeing up of global trade," she said. "Forty years on, we are in even more uncertain times. " It's so important that the national public broadcaster has Australian eyes on the world, putting the significance of major global events into context for local audiences. " Photo shows Williams wears black rimmed glasses at his home, looking outward to some greenery Kim Williams says the ABC is "eager to restore" a bureau in Beijing after the last correspondent was forced to leave in 2020. The ABC's choice of Tingle, a respected political journalist of more than 40 years, comes after ABC Chair Kim Williams spoke on the importance of the ABC's continued international coverage. In a September speech, Mr Williams flagged his desire to return ABC correspondents to China as a "critical centre" of the world. ABC News currently has correspondents in 11 overseas locations and another seven local reporters based around our region under the Pacific Local Journalism Network. ABC Director of News Justin Steven said Tingle had the "experience, knowledge and skills to help audiences make sense of the extraordinary times we're living in". "International reporting is a cornerstone of the ABC News service," he said in a statement. "We have an outstanding group of foreign correspondents and technical specialists and Laura will add even more firepower to this busy and productive team." ABC News will now advertise for a new 7.30 Political Editor. ABC
