Sir, It's fine for the government to say that for businesses to have access to foreign labour they will have to train British workers via apprenticeships and other schemes ('Migrants must earn their right to remain', May 12), but surely what is needed is to build a workforce that demonstrates a keenness for work. All well and good for those who have a work ethic, but it is very hard for firms to encourage individuals who are reluctant to engage. More needs to be done in our education system to help the latter to appreciate the meaning of getting a job and contributing to BowesTarrant Keyneston, Dorset
