Survey: Proportion of mothers in Japan relying on breast-feeding falls

A survey has found that the proportion of mothers in Japan who always or mostly breast-feed their babies shrank by more than 25 percentage points last year compared to a decade before. The online survey's results were announced in Tokyo on Thursday. It was conducted last October by the Smile Lactation Research Institute, a study group launched by experts and a baby care products maker. The survey covered nearly 400 mothers raising babies aged 5 months old or younger. Fifty-one percent of respondents said they feed their babies on breastmilk at all or most times. That's down 27 percentage points from 2014. In contrast, mothers who said they feed their babies with formula at all or most times rose 12 points to 29 percent. Experts who helped carry out the survey say the changes may be due to several factors. They say as the number of double-income households grows, more fathers could be choosing to feed their babies with formula to reduce the burden on mothers. They also say mothers might be turning to formula early as they look to return to work more quickly. The experts also say parents may be feeling less hesitant about using formula in general. Tokyo University of Information Sciences professor Ichikawa Kaori took part in the survey. She says formula is nutritionally balanced and supports sound growth while breastmilk is highly nutritious and can help enhance immune systems. She says she wants parents to learn about these merits and weigh their lifestyles and other factors when deciding how to feed their babies.
