US women cruise past China in friendly win
Catarina Macario celebrates her opening goal for the USA in a 3-0 win over China on Saturday (Kerem YUCEL) The United States romped to a 3-0 win over China in a women's international football friendly on Saturday, as the former world champions' renaissance under coach Emma Hayes continued. Goals from Catarina Macario, Sam Coffey and Lindsey Heaps delivered a convincing win for the American women, who dominated a fragile Chinese side at Saint Paul, Minnesota. Advertisement It was the 17th win in 21 games for the USA's English head coach Hayes, who was tasked with restoring the Americans to the summit of the women's game following their early 2023 World Cup exit. Hayes, who led the USA to a gold medal at last year's Olympics, is preparing her squad for this year's qualifiers for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. The former Chelsea manager would have liked what she saw in a fluid first half performance that saw China's risky tactical decision to play with a high line punished ruthlessly. Macario opened the scoring after 28 minutes, bundling home a close-range finish after good work from Alyssa Thompson. Advertisement The USA doubled their tally seven minutes later with a brilliantly worked goal, which began when the gifted 17-year-old midfielder Lily Yohannes released Thompson down the right who crossed for Macario. Macario played a short pass into Coffey, who swept home with aplomb. Macario and Heaps both threatened to add to the USA tally with long-range shots that were just off target before half-time. Heaps though bagged the USA's third in the 54th minute, nodding in past China goalkeeper Pan Hongyan to effectively seal the win. The USA face Jamaica in a friendly in on Tuesday. rcw/bb

Normal service resumed after the interval when OL Lyonnes' Lindsey Heaps bagged her 38th goal for the United States to extend their advantage while putting the result out of sight. Heaps' effort would be the last final major action on the day, with the US now set to lock horns with Jamaica on Tuesday at Energizer Park. Standout Performer: Catarina Macario Advertisement A match-winning strike and a helper for Sam Coffey's effort from the Chelsea forward proved decisive, guaranteeing the US got back to winning ways before Tuesday night. 📸 Adam Bettcher - 2025 Getty Images

Manchester United end Asia tour on brighter note in Hong Kong
Supporters savoured Manchester United's presence in Hong Kong as the English club contributed to a lively spectacle in Friday's friendly match against the city's representative team. Advertisement Playing their second fixture of a two-match Asian tour, United won 3-1 and offered more bang for spectators' buck than was the case in their midweek defeat by Asean All-Stars. On that previous outing in Kuala Lumpur, they were jeered at full-time and deemed by coach Ruben Amorim to have lacked hunger. Jason and Wing were among those in attendance at a rain-lashed Hong Kong Stadium, along with their 'superfan' son Cyrus, 15. 'I'm so excited,' Cyrus said. Paulo Josue's late strike saves Malaysia from blushes in 1-1 friendly draw against 72nd-ranked Cape Verde
KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — Courageous Malaysia were in a class of their own when they drew 1-1 against Cape Verde, ranked 72nd in the world, in a Tier 1 international football friendly at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras here last night. Substitute striker Paulo Josue scored an equaliser with about 10 minutes remaining to save the honour of the Harimau Malaya squad in front of their own fans after defender Sidny Lopes Cabral had put Cape Verde ahead early in the first half. In the first clash between the two teams on the competitive stage, coach Cklamovski signalled the importance of local players when he fielded seven homegrown footballers in the starting XI while the latest naturalised player Gabriel Palmero was given the chance to make his debut for Malaysia. Malaysia, ranked 131st in the world gave an early warning to the visitors when Palmero's shot from outside the penalty area hit the post in the seventh minute, but Cape Verde were first in front through Cabral who cleverly beat Daniel Ting and fired a powerful shot from close range a minute later. Cape Verde (officially the Republic of Cabo Verde) then continued to dominate the game and launched a wave of attacks through a series of powerful shots that forced the national defence led by captain Matthew Davies and goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan Hazmi Mohamed to work extra hard to save the situation. On resumption, Malaysia had a golden opportunity to equalise but Faisal's powerful shot in the 61st minute was cleared by goalkeeper Josimar Dias before Muhammad Ubaidullah Shamsul Fazili arrived to pounce the ball on the goal line. Arif Aiman also missed an opportunity to score when his attempt in a one-on-one situation hit Dias' foot in the 69th minute. However, Harimau Malaya could finally heave a sigh of relief when Josue equalised in the 79th minute after he calmly finished off a pass from Quentin Cheng. The heroic Josue then had the best chance to score the national team's winning goal, but his close-range shot hit the alert Dias' foot in the 86th minute, thus ensuring the 1-1 result remained until the final whistle. Malaysia will once again face Cape Verde in a friendly match behind closed doors at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 3. The two friendly matches against Cape Verde are in preparation for Malaysia to face Vietnam in the second Group F match of the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on June 10. Vietnam and Malaysia now share the top two spots in the group with three points respectively after having played a match each. — Bernama

Manchester United suffer new low with post-season friendly defeat
'The past is the past,' Omar Berrada, the Manchester United chief executive, said on Wednesday as he spoke to the club's in-house TV cameras, after wiping the sweat from his brow in the humidity of Kuala Lumpur. The problem he has, before a massive summer for the club, is that the past is very hard to forget, especially when the team he is trying to rebuild continues to remind everyone of how bad they are. A week after United went Awol in the Europa League final, they served up another dire display, this time against the ASEAN All Stars, a team containing players from the 12 nations of the southeast Asian confederation. More than 72,000 fans filled the seats of Malaysia's national stadium. The greeting that they gave to their heroes in red was akin to Beatlemania. The screams were relentless as Ruben Amorim and his players got off their red battle bus and they continued throughout the warm-up and the first half. As the match progressed, the adulation from the fans began to dry up, however. What unfolded before their eyes proved to everyone present, including those who booed at the final whistle, that the players are not superhuman. Far from it. Granted, this was a friendly match, part of United's money-spinning two-match tour of the Far East — and the game was played in energy-sapping 30-plus degree heat — but there was little sign of any plan, invention or order. 'It's a match they will remember for the rest of their lives,' the compere said as the All Stars XI went up to collect their medals at the Bukit Jalil Stadium. For Maung Maung Lwin in particular, that will be the case. May 28, 2025 will be for ever remembered by the Myanmar captain as the day that he scored the winner against United. He is used to turning out against inferior opposition in Thailand's top league for Lamphun Warriors, but when one on one with 19 minutes to go, he slotted the ball past Tom Heaton, leaving Amorim and his players having to watch the hosts lift the Maybank Challenge Cup. Among the United players to receive a good welcome early on was Harry Maguire. Maguire was once booed on a pre-season tour in Australia, but here in Malaysia, he is very much loved by the supporters. His every touch was greeted with a cheer from the United fans in the crowd. The same went for André Onana, another who has had his critics back home. 'O-na-na' they chanted every time the Cameroonian was called into action, which was often. The same problems that had dogged United all season were present here — an open midfield, a lack of quality up front and all but no creativity. Nguyen Hai Long, the Vietnamese striker, drifted to the right but then cut in from the flank and sent a wicked shot just a yard wide of the goal. From the resulting goal kick, Onana lumped the ball out of play looking for Patrick Dorgu. Ayden Heaven and Manuel Ugarte put in goal-saving blocks as the hosts applied the pressure. Before being one of four players to be substituted on 30 minutes, Jack Moorhouse, the ball-carrying academy midfielder, moved confidently with the ball but there was no outlet for him to find up front. United's first and only shot of the first half came when Kobbie Mainoo found room in the box and let fly with a volley from eight yards that was blocked on the line by the chest of a defender. The sight of Bruno Fernandes coming out from the tunnel at the start of the second half lifted the mood of the United fans. Surely now they would see some quality with him on the pitch. The captain did inject life and creativity into the team but again, in front of goal, United were poor. Chido Obi, who replaced Rasmus Hojlund at half-time, put one of his shots wide. As United tired, gaps started to open up and after some patient play down the left, Lwin left Godwill Kukonki and made a diagonal run, which was spotted by Adrian Segecic, who played the ball through to the striker and he prodded the ball past Heaton before lining up with all his team-mates for a photo in front of the cameras. Alejandro Garnacho, playing for the first time since his post-match strop in Bilbao, buzzed around the box but when he slotted Obi in for another chance, his shot was blocked. United's last effort involved Jonny Evans trying to thread the ball through a packed All Stars defence. At that point, it became clear that United would not score.
