Gas explosion injures 10 at Tokyo construction site, prompts evacuation

A gas explosion at a construction site in Tokyo's Edogawa Ward injured 10 people on Tuesday morning, prompting a large-scale emergency response and temporary evacuations. The blast occurred around 9:30 a.m. in the Higashi-Kasai area, following reports of a loud explosion and smoke. A construction vehicle at the scene caught fire, sending black smoke into the air. The blaze was brought under control about 90 minutes later, with more than 30 fire trucks, including pumpers, deployed for the operation, according to an NHK report. Ten people, including construction workers and nearby residents in their 20s to 70s, sustained non life-threatening injuries, according to the Tokyo Fire Department. Police said workers had been driving piles into the ground for a new condominium when they likely struck an underground gas pipe, triggering the explosion. The blast is believed to have shattered windows and signs on nearby buildings and convenience stores, sending glass scattered across the street. A 44-year-old manager of a nearby supermarket said he heard the explosion shortly after arriving at work. 'I heard three or four bangs, and the ground shook. When I looked outside, a car was in flames. I was solely focused on guiding people to safety. I was thinking I had to protect my employees and customers,' he said. Selangor top cop: Police findings on Putra Heights gas blast out by end June

SEPANG, May 27 — Police investigations into the Putra Heights gas pipe inferno last month have been completed, Selangor police chief Commissioner Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said today. Hussein said the police findings will be released alongside the Department of Occupational Safety and Health's (DOSH) report on the gas pipe specimen, which is still pending. 'At present, ground zero has been handed over to Petronas Gas Bhd for restoration works. 'We are expecting the DOSH report to be ready by the end of June. Accordingly, we will release our findings at that time as well,' he told a press conference here. Asked whether the cause of the explosion had been determined, Hussein said it remains inconclusive for now, pending DOSH's findings. On April 30, Hussein said adverse weather conditions were hampering ongoing on-site excavation works at ground zero, causing delays in extricating the affected pipes. He said the final pipe specimen was extricated on May 8. MORE TO COME

Mum remains critical, kids stable following 'suspicious' Melbourne house fire

A mother remains in a critical condition in hospital while her two girls are in a stable condition following a suspicious house fire in Melbourne's south-east. The woman in her 30s and her primary school-aged children were critically injured on Wednesday night when a gas cylinder at the Terrigal Street, Chadstone property exploded. Police deemed the fire suspicious on Thursday and are investigating the cause. On Friday morning, the Royal Children's Hospital confirmed the two children were in a "stable condition" and the Alfred Hospital confirmed the mother's condition remained critical. Police said on Thursday a male occupant of the house was not under arrest and was not at home at the time of the fire. Fire Rescue Victoria commander Paul Eckholdt said rescuing the mother and children from the home was challenging because firefighters had to force entry and wear breathing apparatus.

Al Barsha gas explosion: Woman battles for life after suffering severe burns

A Dubai resident continues to battle for her life after sustaining severe burn injuries in a gas explosion in her building in Al Barsha earlier this month. Annalyn, who was staying on the first floor of the building directly above the restaurant where the gas explosion occurred, sustained 65 per cent burn injuries and is in the burn unit of a government hospital, according to her sister Angely. 'Ever since I got the call about her, I have been worried sick,' Angely told Khaleej Times over phone. 'I work in Saudi Arabia as a nurse, and I have not yet been able to travel to the UAE. I am hoping to come there by the end of May when I will be able to get a few days of leave.' On May 13, a fire had broken out at the Al Zarooni building on Halim Street in Barsha 1. According to Dubai Civil Defense (DCD), the incident was caused by a gas leak in a restaurant and was contained in record time. Several residents reported that they had spent the following days with friends and family. According to Angely, her sister and her brother-in-law suffered burn injuries and were rushed to the hospital. Her sister was in a more critical condition and remains in the burn unit while her brother-in-law is more stable and is recovering in the ward. 'It was quite late in the night, and they were preparing to go to bed,' she said. 'That is when the disaster occurred.' Timely updates She said the hospital staff had been giving her family timely updates about Annelyn's condition but there was a long road to recovery. In photos seen by Khaleej Times, the Filipina can be seen on a hospital bed surrounded by medical equipment. The sister confirmed that Annalyn has been tracheostomized- a process where an opening is surgically created through the neck into the windpipe to allow air to fill the lungs. 'We are worried about their hospital bills and how their future life is going to be,' she said. 'Recovering from burn injuries can take a very long time and requires constant care and attention.' One of the main breadwinners of the family, Annalyn and her husband have been UAE residents for over a decade. Although she started off her career as a receptionist, Annalyn had recently moved jobs to work at a gym where her husband had been a long-time employee.

Westlake apartment building evacuated after possible gas-related explosion

A Westlake apartment building was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after a possible gas-related explosion left a man significantly injured, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Authorities said around 2:19 p.m. smoke was coming from the attic vents of the two-story building in the area of W. Fourth Street and S. Bixel Street after a possible gas-related explosion occurred. According to an LAFD representative, a wall in a second-floor unit suffered structural damage, and there is a possible shifting of the roof over that unit. All tenants in the building were evacuated as a Building and Safety inspector evaluates the structure.
