The judge sentenced Lawrence to one year at the Community Reintegration Center, but that sentence was stayed. Instead, the court opted for probation. According to the criminal complaint, at about 12:25 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, police were sent to an accident near 60th and Raintree. Upon arrival, they found a 2-year-old child lying in the roadway after being struck by a truck. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Yukon braked and swerved but appeared unable to avoid striking the child. The Yukon stopped after the accident and remained on scene, per the complaint. Officers determined that the child lived in an apartment in the area. The window to the apartment had been left open, and the child had climbed out and wandered unsupervised into the roadway. The complaint goes on to say that police spoke to the defendant, Laron Lawrence, who admitted being the driver of the Yukon. He admitted that he did not have a driver's license. He admitted the same things in a later interview with detectives. He said that he was on his way back to work when the child darted out in front of him, and he was unable to avoid hitting him, despite his efforts to avoid the child. A man has admitted causing the death of his passenger when he crashed his car into a tree in Hammond, 20, appeared before Canterbury Crown Court on Wednesday where he spoke only to confirm his name and enter a guilty plea to the charge of causing death by dangerous Entwistle, 18, died when Hammond crashed the car he was driving on Dumpton Park Drive, Broadstairs, on 1 October Entwistle's mother, Keena Entwistle, said it was a relief to hear the driver plead guilty to the charge. Canberra man who stabbed partner to death in family kitchen pleads guilty to murder
A 72-year-old Canberra man has pleaded guilty to murdering his partner at their north Canberra home during a brief appearance in the ACT Supreme Court today. Van Thanh Vu was helped by an interpreter as he told the court "I plead guilty". Police and emergency services had rushed to the couple's house in the suburb of Bruce in October 2023 after they were alerted by family. She had been stabbed multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene. Vu was also injured and rushed to hospital where he was revived. Days later he appeared in court via video link from his hospital bed, and was formally charged with murder. He was to face trial this week. But that has now been abandoned because Vu has pleaded guilty. Before the guilty plea, prosecutor Trent Hickey told the court he had flagged a plea of not guilty by reason of mental impairment. Mr Hickey said each side had already received psychiatric reports, with Vu likely to seek a further report ahead of sentencing. Vu's lawyers told the court he had received a diagnosis about his health, and his health records would also need to be subpoenaed before the sentence. The court has set aside October 20 for sentencing to allow time for any experts to be examined.
