After deadly school attack, Austria swiftly moves to change gun laws
The Austrian government has announced it will tighten gun regulations after a 21-year-old shot people 10 dead at a school before taking his own life. The attack in Graz was one of the country's worst outbreaks of violence and the gunman legally owned the two firearms used in the shooting. New measures include raising the minimum age for obtaining a gun permit from 21 to 25 and making psychological tests more stringent. The 'cooling-off phase' for all weapon purchases will be extended to four weeks, and newly issued gun permits will expire after eight years. The government also plans to ensure psychological test failures from military service are shared for gun permit applications and increase counselling and police presence at schools.
