Published May 18th, 2025 - 09:52 GMT ALBAWABA - Speculations about the fate of the Supreme Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Khalifa Haftar, emerged online after claims that he could have suffered a health emergency. Also Read French Envoy Paul Solar Visits Khalifa Haftar in Benghazi During his visit to Russia, many people took to social media platforms claiming that Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, 81, died of a stroke after he was taken to the hospital. What caused the rumor to spread fast was that the Libyan military leader had not appeared following his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin. An X user posted a photo of the Libyan strongman and wrote: "Unconfirmed reports indicate that Khalifa Haftar died at the age of 83 in a Moscow hospital after suffering a stroke. Since he went to Russia, he has not appeared or returned." انباء غير مؤكدة عن وفاة خليفة حفتر عن عمر يناهز 83 عاما في احد مستشفيات موسكو بعد تعرضه لجلطة دماغية مند ذهابه الى روسيا لم يظهر او يعد ومع الاحداث الواقعة في طرابلس سُجل غيابه هو واولاده انتشر خبر وفاته اليوم كثيرا في ليبيا ولا واحد من المنطقة الشرقية نفى الخبر حتى اللحظة — زكرياء|RBH 🇩🇿 (@RouabahZakarya) May 17, 2025 The person added: "With the events taking place in Tripoli, his absence and that of his children were recorded. The news of his death spread widely today in Libya, and no one from the eastern region has denied the news so far." On May 10, the Kremlin posted several photos of Putin and Khalifa Haftar, saying it was taken during the meeting between "the President of Russia and Supreme Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar." Others allegedly said that the Libyan commander could only be sick. Did Khalifa Haftar Die of a stroke in Russia? No official sources denied or confirmed the rumors that have been going on online for the last couple of days regarding the health disappearance of Khalifa Haftar, the Supreme Commander of the LNA. However, such allegations regarding the Libyan military man are not the first; he faced death rumors multiple times before, where people used to spread fake news online saying Hafat died, and after that, they turned out to be rumors only. © 2000 - 2025 Al Bawaba (

Government to run full national interest test on World Health Pandemic Treaty
Foreign Minister Winston Peters. Photo: RNZ / REECE BAKER The government will run a full national interest test on a draft Pandemic Treaty negotiated by the World Health Assembly before deciding whether to sign up to it. Foreign Minister Winston Peters and Health Minister Simeon Brown have confirmed government officials will scrutinise the draft at length, to ensure it preserves sovereign decision-making, before giving any commitments to the WHO. Now that negotiations on the draft Treaty have been completed, it will be discussed at the annual meeting in Geneva next week. Peters said it was important to ensure the treaty wouldn't interfere with New Zealand making its own decisions on travel bans, vaccination mandates, or lockdowns in the future. "Decisions about how New Zealand responds to any health emergency are made in Wellington, not Geneva, and we are determined to preserve our sovereign decision-making ability," he said. "While negotiations on the draft Treaty have been completed, there are a number of steps remaining - which are likely to take some years - before the New Zealand government will take a decision on whether or not we should sign up." It has taken three years of negotiations to get to the point where the treaty is being presented in draft-form to the WHO for adoption. Brown said the government supports "strengthening global health systems to improve pandemic preparedness and response". "This will also help New Zealand support our Pacific partners to better manage future pandemic responses in our region," he said. Bindi Irwin Misses Annual Steve Irwin Gala After Medical Emergency
Originally appeared on E! Online Bindi Irwin was forced to cancel an appearance at an annual event honoring her late father after suffering a health emergency. The 26-year-old's brother Robert Irwin explained that his sister could not attend the annual Steve Irwin Gala—celebrating the Crocodile Hunter's life and legacy 18 years after his death—because she was undergoing surgery after her appendix ruptured. "She's going to be OK," Robert told People at the May 10 event in Las Vegas, "but surgery, out of all the things we were ready for, that was not one of them." Bindi had already traveled to the city—and posted photos of herself standing with Robert and their mom Terri Irwin by the Bellagio resort's fountains on Instagram May 9—before the decision was made to undergo the operation and miss the event. "She came to Las Vegas and was ready to come to the gala, put on a brave face in a lot of discomfort and a lot of pain and said, 'Nope, I'm just going to tough it out, I'm going to go for it,'" Robert said, "But the surgeon said, 'No, your appendix is going. That thing's gotta come out.'" More from E! Bindi's medical emergency comes two years after she underwent surgery for another medical issue, a chronic one. In 2023, the Crikey! It's the Irwins star had an "enormous chocolate cyst" and more than 30 lesions surgically removed from her ovaries to treat endometriosis, a reproductive disease in which abnormal tissue grows outside the uterus, from which she has suffered for over a decade. "She's just come out the other side of endometriosis and now the appendix goes," Robert said. "Bindi has become an incredible advocate for women's health, particularly, and I think it's really important to prioritize getting help." Bindi's medical emergency took place just before Mother's Day. The same day as the gala, she received a sweet tribute from her husband Chandler Powell, with whom she shares daughter Grace Warrior Irwin Powell, 4. "Happy Mother's Day to my beautiful, extraordinary wife," the 28-year-old wrote on Instagram May 10, alongside a photo of Bindi with their little girl. "I feel unbelievably lucky to spend my life married to you. It's incredible to see the strong, kind, amazing mama you are to our daughter. I'm grateful that she gets to grow up with you as her inspiration. We love you so much." Terri commented, "Happy Mother's Day sweet Bindi." Look back at Bindi and Chandler's romance.
