‘The Second Brain': Why gut health is the key to mental clarity, wellbeing
The gut's influence extends far beyond digestion – affecting everything from immunity and inflammation to focus, mood, and mental clarity. This interconnectedness is driving a wave of innovation in personalized health, and at the center of it is Bioniq, a supplement company using data to turn gut health into a foundation for mental and physical performance. The importance of gut health 'Gut health has become a focal point in personalized health because it's now widely understood that the gut plays a central role in overall well-being – it affects everything from immunity and energy levels to mental health and inflammation. It's often called the 'second brain' for a reason,' said Oliver Motisi, Chief Product Officer at Bioniq, in an interview with Al Arabiya English. Trillions of bacteria live in the human digestive tract, forming the gut microbiome. These microbes influence hormone production, metabolize nutrients, regulate immune cells, and even produce up to 95 percent of the body's serotonin – one of the brain's key mood stabilizers. When the gut microbiome is imbalanced, inflammation can rise and communication between the brain and body can break down. 'At Bioniq, we don't look at gut health in isolation. Instead, we integrate it into a broader, data-driven understanding of each individual's biology,' Motisi said. 'Our approach is grounded in blood biomarker analysis, so if we see signs of inflammation, nutrient malabsorption or deficiencies linked to gut function, that's where we start.' The gut-brain axis Each personalized supplement formula is designed with precision and built on a prebiotic fiber base to support both nutrient absorption and microbiome diversity. 'Our goal is to support the body as a whole, with gut health as a critical part of the full system, guided by real data, not guesswork.' The company is especially focused on the bidirectional communication between the gut and brain – what scientists call the gut-brain axis. This channel involves the central and enteric nervous systems and uses neural, hormonal and immune signals to send constant updates between the two organs. 'We now know that changes in gut microbiota can significantly impact cognitive performance, mood and emotional resilience,' Motisi explained. 'That's because the gut and brain are deeply interconnected through the gut-brain axis – a communication pathway that includes neural, hormonal and immune signals.' Mental health symptoms like brain fog, anxiety, and fatigue are often early signs of imbalances in the gut. When the balance of bacteria in the gut is disturbed, it can interfere with the production and signaling of brain chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). For example, low levels of beneficial gut bacteria may reduce serotonin production, which can contribute to anxiety or low mood. Imbalances can also trigger low-grade inflammation, which has been linked to cognitive issues like brain fog and difficulty concentrating. Fatigue may result from poor nutrient absorption in the gut, especially when the body lacks key vitamins and minerals like B12, magnesium or iron. In some cases, individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or other digestive conditions also report increased symptoms of stress, anxiety or depression – highlighting how gut health and mental health are often very much intertwined. Micronutrients Micronutrients play a major role in gut-brain health, Motisi explained. 'Micronutrients play a foundational role in how our brains function – they're the building blocks behind everything from memory and focus to mood and resilience,' he said. 'Take magnesium, for example – it's essential for neurotransmitter function and managing stress. Elements like zinc and selenium support processes related to mental clarity and immune health.' Tailored ingredients To address these imbalances that people may have, Bioniq creates custom supplement blends with ingredients tailored to target brain and body together. 'When it comes to cognitive function, that can mean including targeted ingredients like magnesium, omega-3s, adaptogens, and more to help boost clarity, focus, and mental performance.' What sets Bioniq apart in a crowded supplement market is its deep reliance on data. 'Since our founding in 2019, Bioniq has built one of the largest databases of its kind, drawing from over 300,000 individuals and more than 6 million biochemical data points,' Motisi said. 'Our patented algorithm cross-references users' health quiz responses with real-world blood test results to create a truly personalized formulation.' Looking ahead, Motisi sees blood-based biomarkers – particularly those linked to inflammation – reshaping how brain and mental health are tracked and treated. 'I believe the future of brain health will be increasingly defined by how we interpret inflammatory markers, hormonal balance, and metabolic health together, rather than in isolation.' For conditions like anxiety or even neurodegenerative diseases, Motisi said he sees tremendous promise. 'By tailoring supplementation based on an individual's specific biomarkers, we can target these root causes more precisely,' he said.

Elon Musk's Neuralink to test brain chip in UAE
The UAE will host the first clinical trials outside the US of a wireless brain chip made by tech billionaire Elon Musk's Neuralink company, which is designed to improve the lives of paralysed people. The Department of Health Abu Dhabi on Wednesday said it has teamed up with Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and Neuralink to launch the trial programme, known as UAE-PRIME. Mansoor Ibrahim Al Mansoori, chairman of the Department of Health Abu Dhabi, said the development marks a significant step in developing life science in the region. The chip is meant to improve the lives of quadriplegic patients who have lost the ability to control their bodies below the neck. By inserting the Neuralink device – about the size of a one dirham coin – into the brain, users can control a computer or mobile device using the power of thought. 'In collaboration with Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, we are proud to enable the safe and responsible advancement of brain-computer interface technology, offering renewed hope to individuals living with severe neurological conditions,' said Mr Al Mansoori. 'Abu Dhabi's commitment to innovation in health and life sciences – driving the acceleration of breakthrough technologies that are purposefully tested, ethically governed, and made accessible to patients around the world.' Neuralink goal is to connect people's brains to computers, to help tackle complex health conditions. Research and development of the N1 device aims to restore capabilities such as vision, motor function and speech. The device's use could be expanded beyond medical problems and into everyday life. Implants are inserted using a special surgical robot with precision capabilities exceeding the human hand. It attaches more than a thousand tiny electrodes into brain tissue. The implant has been tested on three people to date. Mr Musk also claims the research could expand how we experience the world around us. The tech billionaire and adviser to US President Donald Trump is not the only investor hoping to capitalise on brain power. The rapidly evolving brain-computer interface market has been joined by Apple, which has collaborated with US start-up Synchron to develop a similar device. A less invasive Stentrode device is similar to a stent used to inflate blocked arteries, and is inserted into a vein close to the brain's motor cortex. Once in place, the device's 16 electrodes detect brain signals and translate them into digital commands to navigate through Apple devices. Ten patients have experienced the Synchron device, since testing began in 2019.

Investors Are Betting On FemTech's Untapped $103 Billion Market
Femly CEO Arion Long and 100KM Ventures Managing Partner Shalanda Armstrong FemTech is not just about periods and pregnancy, it's about data sovereignty, community health, and economic power. The term encompasses software, diagnostics, products, and services focused on women's health, and is on the rise with a global market expected to surpass $103 billion by 2030, according to Deloitte. Funds like 100KM Ventures are continuing to invest in the future of work and health, knowing that game changing FemTech entrepreneurs like Arion Long, CEO of Femly, the world's first smart touchless pad and tampon vending machine are poised to gain a fair share of this market. During Women's Health month it's important to highlight that Black women face some of the worst health outcomes in the U.S., with KFF finding they have the highest maternal mortality rates to disproportionate misdiagnosis in reproductive issues like fibroids and endometriosis. FemTech has the power to bridge these gaps through culturally informed tech, but only if those most affected have a seat at the innovation table. This creates an urgent need for more relevant solutions, and becomes a ripe investment opportunity for those who understand these nuanced markets. Femly Ecoflow™ Dispenser FemTech startups like Femly, with its game-changing innovation that is increasing period care access in restrooms across the nation, and is backed by Pharrell Williams' Black Ambition, Beyoncé's BeyGOOD Foundation, and Google (GOOG -7.51%), is showing what's possible. Despite funding challenges, Long's company continues growing because it meets a specific, underserved women's healthcare need. 'We wanted to think about what innovation looked like and how we could merge social impact with hardware to create a smart feminine hygiene device. Very quickly we found out that we needed everything from engineers and access to capital, that our early traction with our pre-sales helped us secure venture funding' said Long to CultureBanx. Diverse leadership in FemTech leads to products that actually serve the full spectrum of women's health needs, from fertility tracking and tele-gynecology to menopause support and period poverty solutions. Even as women's health innovation gains traction, the capital flowing into it remains uneven. Not to mention that FemTech investment represents just 2% of the health tech sector. This gap exists even though women spend twice as much on healthcare as men. Venture capital funds have long ignored this market based on the outdated assumption that women's health is 'niche.' However, with half the global population as the target demographic, and demand for tech-enabled personalized care skyrocketing, investors like 100KM Ventures Managing Partner, Shalanda Armstrong, who see the bigger picture are poised for major returns. 'When we think about our two verticals at 100KM, we see this as a huge market opportunity because we're thinking about how the next generation is really investing their time, money and social capital,' said Armstrong. When you consider that women's readiness to adopt digital solutions boosts investor confidence, 100KM is ahead of the curve. Grand View Research reports women are 75% more likely to use digital health tools than men. This behavior difference creates a strong user base for FemTech products and services like Femly. The U.S. FemTech market dominated the sector in 2023 through innovative product launches and increased healthcare investments. While North American FemTech investment dropped by nearly two-thirds from 2021 to 2023, found that the EMEA region demonstrated greater stability with only a 50% decline. This geographical variation presents opportunities for investors interested in this expanding global sector. "Until recently there's been an extraordinary blind spot in the world around female healthcare." said Ida Tin, Co-founder and CEO of Clue; credited with coining the term 'FemTech' to TheConduit. Recent changes in funding priorities have altered the FemTech map. Specifically, the White House Initiative on Women's Health Research allocated $100 million in federal funding for women's health in February 2024. Also, large investment firms like Lux Capital and Google Ventures now back FemTech companies. The future is female, or at least it will be filled with lots of FemTech. Therefore, it's not enough to advocate for better women's health outcomes, we need ownership, investment and leadership in the tools that make them possible. As more investors step into the space now, they don't just help fund companies solving critical health disparities, they also shape a future where culturally competent care is standard, not scarce. Perhaps, the next health unicorn might not be a fitness tracker or supplement, it could be a tech-powered women's health company.
