Northland homes without power after severe gales

Thousands are without power in parts of the West Kaipara area after high winds ripped through Northland on Thursday afternoon. Northpower said 10 major lines were down and about 3200 customers were cut off across parts of West Kaipara. It said some of those would be homes, and water pumps and cow sheds were also affected. The area with the most concentrated outages is Mareretu - where over 1000 connections are down. And in Whareora, east of Whangārei, about 132 homes are without power after a tree smashed into a power pole. Northpower said crews were working on restoring the network, but it was unclear when power would back. Earlier this afternoon, a roof lifted off a Northland home and a truck and trailer flipped near Dargaville. FENZ said it had attended to six incidents, mostly relating to downed trees and power lines. A strong wind watch is in place for the part of Northland north of Whangārei, until 9pm tonight. UAE weather: Police issue warning as high winds and dust hits country

A weather warning was sent out on Wednesday over high winds and dust blanketing parts of the country as police urged drivers to be vigilant on the roads due to poor visibility. The National Centre of Meteorology said yellow and orange alerts would be in place until 5pm, owing to the unsettled weather conditions. Police in Abu Dhabi have warned motorists to be cautious on the roads due to the strong winds and high levels of dust clouds. "Abu Dhabi Police urges drivers to be cautious due to low visibility during high winds and dust. And for your safety and for the safety of others on the road, please do not be distracted by taking any videos or using your phone," read a message from the force on social media platform X. The warnings came as forecasters predicted parts of the eastern UAE could see some rainfall over the next few days. The NCM said convective cloud formations on Wednesday may lead to downpours. It also forecast 'fair to partly cloudy' conditions on Thursday with a 'probability of some convective clouds formation especially eastward by afternoon' that 'may be associated with rainfall'. It was a similar story for Friday with further chances for rain towards the east. The centre also forecast winds reaching speeds of up to 40kph, kicking up dust clouds over coastal and internal areas that could cut visibility on the roads. The UAE's weather is being affected by a low-pressure system from the east, it added. Rain has already been falling in parts of the UAE. Videos posted to Storm Centre, a popular social media channel that tracks the country's weather, showed downpours in the UAE's east such as Khor Fakkan. While most of the country is experiencing typical scorching summer temperatures – the hottest on Tuesday was a sizzling 49.8°C in at the Saih Al Salam station in Dubai – it is not uncommon for rain to hit the UAE during these months. Low pressure systems that drift across from India, which is affected by monsoons around this time, help bring rain to the UAE. This also helps cause the 'khareef' phenomenon in southern Oman where the landscape turns green. The rains can be sometimes severe. In 2022, floods hit swathes of the UAE's east coast during the summer, with roads closed and homes inundated. The NCM told The National at the time that it was the wettest July in the UAE since 1978. Temperatures, meanwhile, in Abu Dhabi and Dubai on Wednesday are expected to reach highs of about 46°C and 44°C, respectively, and hit lows of 33°C and 35°C, according to the NCM. On Thursday, highs of 46°C and 43°C are expected, along with lows of around 33°C and 34°C. The UAE endured its hottest April and May on record this year.

Kite surfer in his 70s dies ‘after being blown out of water and hitting yacht'

A kite surfer has died after reportedly being blown out of the water in high winds and thrown into the side of a moored yacht. The incident took place in Portland Harbour, Dorset, at about 1.35pm on Tuesday. The kite surfer, believed to be a man in his 70s, was recovered from the water by a harbour patrol boat and taken to the jetty, where he was pronounced dead. Photographs of the aftermath appear to show the kite tangled around the mast of a boat. Local reports suggest he was blown into the side of the yacht. Police, lifeboat and coastguard services and a search and rescue helicopter responded to the incident. Officers confirmed a second man was left in the care of the ambulance service. Winds reached 35mph during the afternoon at the harbour, which is a popular spot for kite and windsurfers. Portland and neighbouring Weymouth hosted the sailing and windsurfing competitions at the London 2012 Olympics. A Weymouth Lifeboat spokesperson said: 'Weymouth inshore lifeboat was tasked by HM Coastguard and launched at approximately 13:35 to assist with an incident in Portland Harbour. 'A yacht anchored in the harbour having reported a kite surfer in difficulty to the Coastguard. 'The ILB crew arrived on scene to find the kite surfer being recovered from the water by the Portland harbour patrol boat. 'The casualty was transferred to Portland harbour jetty where first aid was administered by the harbour staff and RNLI ILB crew. 'The Emergency Response doctor and local ambulance crew also attended the scene. 'Very sadly the casualty was declared dead by a doctor on scene. 'This is a very tragic incident, and our thoughts go out to the family and friends.' A Dorset Police spokesperson said: 'We received a report at 1.52pm on Tuesday 15 July 2025 raising concern for the welfare of two men in the water in the area of Portland Harbour. 'Emergency services attended and very sadly one of the men, aged in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene. 'His death is not being treated as suspicious and his family has been informed. 'Our thoughts are with the man's family and friends at this very difficult time. 'The second person has been left in the care of the ambulance service.'

Angry Cameron Smith co-leads Liv Golf in Andalucia

Frustrated, angry and tired, Cameron Smith negotiated the tough conditions in San Roque to lead with four others as first-round play had to be suspended in LIV Golf Andalucia due to high winds. The Australian and England's Lee Westwood were at one-under before play was called. Smith was through 16 holes before play was halted, with Westwood through 15. Also tied for first were Talor Gooch (through 10 holes), Joaquin Niemann of Chile (16 holes) and Branden Grace of South Africa (16 holes). Your individual and team leaderboards thru 13 holes of LIV Golf Andalucía 📈The remaining 5 holes of Round 1 will be played Saturday morning.#LIVGolfAndalucía — LIV Golf (@livgolf_league) July 11, 2025 "It was windy the whole day really and got up the last probably couple of hours," Smith said of gusts that reached 33 mph. "Yeah, just kind of had to deal with it and get on with it. It was very tricky out there." First-round play is set to resume at 8am local time Saturday with the second round immediately to follow. Smith was at four under through 14 holes before he started to struggle with the wind, collecting a double-bogey five at the par-3 15th hole and a bogey at the par-4 16th. "It was definitely getting to a stage with three or four holes to go that everyone was pretty tired out there and angry to be honest," Smith said. "It was a very frustrating day. ... You can play this golf course with no wind and it's brutal. When you get 30-mph gusts, it's definitely not an easy place to get around." Westwood also was at four under through his first seven holes, but his hot start was disrupted by a double bogey at No.8, followed by a bogey at No.11. He made par on his final four holes before play was halted. Niemann, who has won four times already this season, had a birdie at No.4 before making 12 consecutive pars when play was stopped. Bryson DeChambeau finished his round at even par and was tied for second place with Spain's Jon Rahm, who was through 14 holes. A group of 10 sat another shot behind at one over, including Phil Mickelson and United States Ryder Cup hopeful Patrick Reed. DeChambeau had three birdies with three bogeys and was at one-under for the round before a bogey six at the 17th. Reed is coming off his first LIV victory on June 29 at LIV Golf Dallas at Carrollton, Texas, winning in a playoff over England's Paul Casey, Japan's Jinichiro Kozuma and South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen. Defending champion Sergio Garcia of Spain was in a logjam at two over through 14 holes along with Australian Matt Jones (five holes). Marc Leishman was at four over after five holes, while Lucas Herbert was two shots further back after five holes, too. Play was suspended at 5:07 pm local time and did not resume. This is the first European stop on the 2025 LIV Golf calendar.
