Spring break getaways with easy access from the Lower Hudson Valley and NYC

It's been a long, cold, wet winter and if you're like me, you're itching to venture somewhere new (and preferably, warm). I'm not alone. According to a recent American Express Global Travel Trends report, travelers are looking for places that offer a mixture of passion and practicality with 74% planning one to three domestic trips in 2025 and 59% opting for one to three international vacations. So what are you thinking about? Somewhere relaxing with a spa? A place with a hopping music scene? Family-friendly? Or something more laid back and beachy? I've got suggestions on all of the above, with easy access from New York airports being key. Good to know: When will REAL ID enforcement begin? What New Yorkers need to know Charleston is at its prime come spring — think warm sunshine, blooming azaleas, and a lively calendar of events including The Credit One Charleston Open, the largest women's-only tennis tournament in North America. For a mix of Southern charm and Parisian flair, check out The Vendue, the city's only arts hotel with more than 200 pieces of original art. It's also known for its rooftop bar as well as its proximity to King Street shopping and Rainbow Row, a colorful landmark. Make plans: 19 Vendue Range, Charleston, 843-577-7970, There's no better place for families than Orlando. But since mom and dad need R & R too, this luxury resort, which debuted its renovated look two years ago, works for everyone. There's free transportation to the parks, early theme park access, guest rooms with views of Walt Disney World Theme Parks, a hotel Kids Club and a luxury spa. Make plans: 14200 Bonnet Creek Resort Lane, 407-597-5500, With many daily direct New York to Los Angeles flights — and LA still desperately in need of tourism as an economic boost after the fires — this property, about 15 minutes from LAX, is both peaceful (should you choose to beach it all day) and chock full of opportunities. Options include ocean kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and catamaran outings. Plus, for ongoing support for the LA wildfires, Portofino has partnered with local charity Baby2Baby to donate 15% of proceeds to the organization with a booking code opt-in, providing essential items to children affected. Make plans: 260 Portofino Way, 310- 421-4195, If you're a music lover, you'll enjoy the action at this nine-story property, which features live musical sets and a rotating art exhibit in partnership with the local Red Arrow gallery. There's also plenty of activities nearby as the hotel is steps from Broadway, known for its vibrant honky-tonk scene. Country life is further celebrated with the rooftop lounge complete with a vintage Scenicruiser bus and its own dive bar, Bobby's Garage. Make plans: 230 4th Ave N, 615-782-7100, Dining: Vesta Kitchen + Bar in Harrison has drinks named for Roman gods, elevated comfort food Nestled along Isla Verde Beach in one of the Caribbean's most desired destinations, the historic Fairmont El San Juan Hotel, features an unparalleled blend of vibrant Puerto Rican culture and world-class luxury, making it ideal for couples, singles, and families. Choose between four sprawling pools with cabanas, a private Isla Verde beach club, local arts programs, a spa, and more than 13 culinary and imbibing experiences. Outside of the hotel, guests can explore the charming streets of Old San Juan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and, just a short drive away, take in the scenery and biodiversity at El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. The best part? It's a quick flight from New York City or Westchester County Airport, with no passport required. Make plans: 6063 Av. Isla Verde, 787-791-1000, Who doesn't love a pink beach? Or a seaside getaway? This hotel, with easy access from New York (think less than two hours direct), features a selection of chic suites, breathtaking views and a spa. There's also culture and history nearby with a visit to the Town of St. George, where you'll find numerous museums and historic homes as well as lots of boutique shopping on Front Street. Make plans: 116 South Rd, Tucker's Town, 441-293-1666, With the slopes of Aspen and Snowmass open until April 20, this is your spring skiing spot. New for the season: barrel saunas with views of the mountains, additional skier shuttles to make getting to the mountains easier, an adventure concierge and wellness programming, and ski rentals on-site. You'll also find kids programming/amenities ranging from scavenger hunts to snowman building kits. Another plus: the fact that all rooms are suites, allowing plenty of space for every member of the family. Make plans: 845 Meadows Road, 970-300-2786, Jet setters, take note: Do any airlines flying out of Westchester Airport offer free checked bags, carry-ons? A recent renovation of guestrooms, food and beverage outlets, and pool area make this 27-acre spot a spring break winner. Plus hello? It has a 2.5-acre water playground with a sandy beach area, a three-story waterslide, and a variety of cabanas available for rent. The pool area also features two new revamped dining concepts. Make plans: 7500 E Doubletree Ranch Road, 480-444-1234, South Beach's electric vibe practically hums here. Located on Collins Avenue, steps from the iconic Lincoln Road, The Ritz-Carlton makes for the ideal jumping off point for the city's sights, historical attractions, museums, beaches, and restaurants. After a night out on the town, kick off the day with a 60-minute fitness classes held on the beach, then spend your afternoon lounging at a poolside cabana. You made it through another East Coast winter so relax and enjoy it. Make plans: 1 Lincoln Road, 786-276-4000, Jeanne Muchnick covers food and dining.
