Carlisle Racecourse set for historic Bell and Plate Day

The Carlisle Bells are regarded as the oldest sporting trophies in the world (Image: Supplied) Carlisle Racecourse is set to host another historic day of racing as the Carlisle Bell and Plate Day is held today. Today's meeting at the Durdar Road venue sees the Carlisle Bells up for grabs – deemed the oldest sporting trophies in the world, dating back to 1559 and the reign of Elizabeth I. Advertisement While the ornate Bells are kept safe throughout the year in Tullie museum in the city, they will be on show on the day as owners, trainers and jockeys will be vying to add their name to the race's illustrious roll of honour. The Agma 20 Years of Franklin Ownership Carlisle Bell Handicap (4.50pm), run over an extended seven furlongs, has a maximum field of 17 runners. Helen Willis, general manager at Carlisle Racecourse said: 'Carlisle Bell and Plate Day is one of our favourite events of the year. 'It's steeped in history and never fails to deliver when it comes to sporting brilliance.' Racing at Carlisle was first recorded way back in 1559 at Swift during the second year of Queen Elizabeth I's reign, when the Carlisle gold bell, donated by Lady Dacre, was presented for the first time. Advertisement Many years on, the 426-year-old bells are still the prize for the winner of Cumbria's most celebrated flat race and, this year, in a bid to further honour the legacy of the day, bosses at the racecourse have renamed a further race, The Carlisle Bell Consolation Handicap, as the Lady Dacre Bell. Racing at the prestigious meeting gets under way at 2.15pm today (Image: PA) Willis added: 'Renaming the race in honour of Lady Dacre felt like a fitting way to pay tribute to the history of the day.' The day's card also features the Cumberland Plate, Listed Eternal Stakes plus a Novice Stakes, offering over £180,000 in prize money throughout the afternoon. Advertisement 'Both feature races are generously supported by long-term sponsor Stablemate by AGMA who are celebrating 20 years of ownership by the Franklin Family with us,' added Willis. The most valuable race of the day is the £47,000 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Eternal Stakes, a Listed race over just short of seven furlongs for three-year-old fillies. Fresh from three winners at Royal Ascot last week, including the Gold Cup on Trawlerman, dual champion jockey William Buick looks to hold a leading chance in this contest aboard Godolphin's Verse Of Love. Trained by Charlie Appleby, the daughter of Siyouni has been successful on two of her three starts. Tickets for Carlisle Bell & Cumberland Plate Day are still available and can be purchased online at Advertisement The first race gets under way at 2.15pm.
