The world's largest hot dog chain announces partnership with Walmart
Walmart shoppers will soon find Wienerschnitzel locations inside select stores. The hot dog chain announced its plans to open six restaurants inside Walmart locations this fall. The restaurants will be located at stores in Washington, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, and California. The partnership will help the world's largest hot dog chain branch out and bring more stores to the Eastern US. 'Wienerschnitzel has spent decades building a strong reputation, especially on the West Coast, and this expansion into Walmart stores signifies a new era of growth for the brand,' said Wienerschnitzel's director of franchise expansion Shak Turner. Wienerschnitzel's Walmart menus will feature fan-favorite items like its Chili Cheese Dogs, Junkyard Dogs, chili cheese fries, jalapeño poppers, and Tastee Freez deserts. The restaurant chain has approximately 340 locations throughout 13 states and more than 50 US units in development. Walmart and Wienerschnitzel have not revealed if they plan to open more restaurants together in the future. The hot dog chain's partnership with Walmart will help it branch out and bring more stores to the Eastern US Walmart frequently looks for prospective tenants to enter its stores and is excited for Wienerschnitzel to be part of it. Before Wienerschnitzel, Walmart entered partnerships with brands like Burger King McDonald's, Taco Bell, and Subway. The partnership is one of many changes the retailer will be undergoing this year. All of what's to come began in 2023 after Walmart unveiled a $9 billion makeover for 1,400 stores. The newest design began a small rollout in Arkansas in 2024, and is in the process of expanding to 650 stores this year. Walmart also debuted a new logo in January, which unimpressed shoppers believed looked similar to the old one. Other 'exciting' Walmart changes include an expansion of fuel station convenience stores and a revamped delivery system to compete with Amazon. Besides revamps, Walmart has been forced to make some unpopular changes due to tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. Walmart said it is excited for its partnership with Wienerschnitzel The retail empire announced it would hike its prices after warning customers this was a possible result of tariffs. Walmart employees leaked photos of price increases showing that some products have seen an 80 percent cost hike. Wienerschnitzel has also made changes recently, including a partnership with Presto Phoenix for AI-driven voice ordering technology and new franchise agreements. Like fast food chain hamburgers, the price of hot dogs could potentially be altered if they are imported from other countries. As of now, it is unclear if Wienerschnitzel plans to raise its menu prices as a result of the tariffs.

4th annual Windy City Hot Dog Fest returns with extended day to Portage Park
The annual Windy City Dog Fest returns Friday in Portage Park for its fourth year. There is more good news. The event has expanded to three days. The event will kick off at the neighborhood's Six Corners in the 4000 block of North Milwaukee Avenue. This year, the event will feature nine of Chicagoland's favorite hot dog vendors competing for your vote to become top dog. There will also be vendors and entertainment all weekend. Chicago's Dog House is one of the restaurants participating this year. Owner Aaron Wolfson explains why people should come out and experience the festival. "It's always a really busy festival, and I think they just want to extend the festival one more day to bring more people there for people to enjoy it, and it's a great event. I say come on by, bring your family … it's a wonderful event," he said. Saturday, contestants will compete in a hot dog-eating contest, and the Top Dog Parade will be held on Sunday. The event opens from 4 to 10 p.m. on Friday and noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. More information can be found on the event's website.

The Mystery Explained: Why Hot Dogs Come in 10-Packs but Buns in 8
Have you ever bought hot dogs and buns for a cookout, only to realize you're either two buns short or two wieners over? You'd think that, by now, the makers of America's favorite ballpark snack would have solved this weird puzzle. Think again. Now, this might sound like a silly conversation to have at a time when many folks are facing much more prescient problems. And you're right—but hear me out because sometimes solving little mysteries gives us the courage to solve the bigger ones. Baby steps. Come with me on this curious and historic journey to find out why we can't get our hot dog to bun ratio sorted. Before about 1940, hot dogs were bought and sold from local butcher shops and were not packaged as they are today. Shoppers would simply ask the butcher for the amount of sausages they needed and would be charged by the pound. This brings us up to modern day meat packaging, wherein meat is still typically sold by the pound. One standard American hot dog is approximately 1.6 ounces. If you do the math, that means that it takes 10 hotdogs to get you to one pound. It simply makes sense, from a meat-packing and butchering perspective, to sell them by the pound, not by the piece. Similarly, modern bakehouses are optimized for efficiency with standards and systems set firmly in place. Buns are typically baked in clusters of four in pans designed to produce eight rolls apiece. It simply doesn't make sense for most bakeries to completely upend their production systems and pan designs to accommodate the average number of hot dogs in a pack. The light at the end of the tunnel: In 2022, Heinz and Wonder Bread partnered to solve this very issue in Canada by brokering a partnership to create 10-packs of buns. Maybe a similar deal is on the horizon for the United States. In the meantime, though, we Americans will just have to find a use for those two extra sausages. My suggestion? Cut those suckers up and make a small batch of pigs in blankets for brunch the next day. Everybody wins! Read the original article on ALLRECIPES

5 mouthwatering moments from the Wienie 500
The inaugural Wienie 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was one for the history books. It had all the ingredients of an iconic race: fast cars, dramatic twists, mechanical difficulties and, of course, hot dogs. While the race was jam-packed with fun from the start all the way through to the photo-finish, here were the five best moments from the Wienie 500: "We ask that you rise and place your hand over your stomach," the crowd was advised over the Speedway speakers, "and feel free to sing along as he performs the Oscar Meyer Wienie Song." The crowd happily obliged as the singer belted out the famous tune, with Friday's hot-doggers looking on from behind him with pride. The audience is just as much a part of the fun as the race itself, and the Wienie 500 fans did not disappoint. But one fan stole the show: Granny Smith, who had the best sign of the day and was chosen to be the honorary engine-starter. "Wienies, start your engines," she proclaimed — and the crowd, naturally, went wild. What is a race without a few unexpected hiccups? After starting the race strong, the Sonoran Dog Wienermobile started overheating and was passed by not one, but two of the Wienermobiles trailing it. "That is an over-grilled dog!" Will Buxton said on the broadcast. Indeed, it was. Down but not out, the Sonoran Dog Wienermobile came back with a vengeance at the first turn, passing Chi Dog to take a commanding lead. A historic race deserves a historic finish, and it got the one it deserved. Despite trailing by the length of two whole Wienermobiles, Slaw Dog made a late push to take the lead and never looked back. Chi Dog was left in the dust for the second time in the race, and Slaw Dog went home with the trophy, a moment the team is sure to relish forever. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
