Quebec Premier François Legault to seek federal funds for Churchill Falls power lines
Quebec Premier Francois Legault responds to the Opposition during question period at the legislature in Quebec City, Thursday, May 29, 2025. (Jacques Boissinot/The Canadian Press) Quebec Premier François Legault says he will ask the federal government to help finance the transmission lines for hydroelectricity projects connecting his province and Newfoundland and Labrador. Legault said today that he will make the request next week during a meeting between the premiers and Prime Minister Mark Carney. Carney has promised that his government will work with the provinces to fast-track projects of national interest. The premiers of Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador signed a new draft agreement between their provinces' utility companies in December. An eventual deal would see Hydro‑Québec pay much more for Churchill Falls power and co-develop new projects with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro along the Churchill River. The new Churchill Falls deal is expected to cost Hydro-Québec at least $33.8 billion. It replaces an agreement signed in 1969 that allowed Hydro‑Québec to purchase the lion's share of the energy from the massive power station in Labrador for rock-bottom prices. Hydro for Data Centers Beats Gas From Alberta, Says Bell AI Boss
Oil and gas hub Alberta made a big pitch in 2024 to supply power for AI data centers. It didn't convince BCE Inc., which is setting up one of the first major systems in the country. 'I don't think it makes sense when we have such strong access to hydroelectricity in many provinces,' said Dan Rink, president of Bell AI Fabric, a new artificial intelligence data-center network announced Wednesday and a subsidiary of Canada's largest telecom company by revenue.

TotalEnergies signs Canada LNG agreement with Ksi Lisims LNG
French energy group TotalEnergies said in a statement on Monday it had signed an agreement with Ksi Lisims LNG for the purchase of two million tons per year of LNG for 20 years from a future liquefaction plant, subject to the final investment decision of the project. TotalEnergies said that was also acquiring a five per cent stake in Western LNG, the developer, shareholder, and future operator of the Ksi Lisims LNG project. Ksi Lisims is a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant with a capacity of 12 million tons per year, located on the Pacific coast of Canada. TotalEnergies said the acquisition grants it the option to increase its stake in Western LNG and/or to take a direct stake in the plant up to approximately 10 per cent when the final investment decision is made. It said that the project's west coast location will give it privileged access to Asia, the largest LNG market. No financial details were provided. Fully electrified and powered by hydroelectricity, Ksi Lisims LNG will be one of the lowest CO2-emitting LNG projects in the world, the company said.
