The update that came into effect June 1 targets devices over a decade old. Enhancements in WhatsApp's system compatibility mean certain aged smartphones will be incapable of supporting the app, attributed to safety concerns. The implementation was initially scheduled for May but got deferred to June. iPhones that were released before 2015 and are unable to update beyond iOS 15.1 are affected by this change. For Android handsets, the requisite operating system is now Android OS 5.0, which debuted in 2014. WhatsApp will no longer be available on these phones - is yours on the list?

As of June 1, the popular messaging app stopped working on certain smartphones. Whatsapp is a popular messaging service used by millions of people in the UK. Whether it's to message your pals about a catch up or to talk to colleagues about work, WhatsApp has quickly become many peoples go to messaging service. However, as of June 1, the popular app no longer works on phones that are more than 10-years-old. This is due to changes in WhatApp's compatibility with operating systems. As a result, older smartphones will no longer have access to the app due to security concerns. ‌ The major change was set to take place in May but was pushed back to June. Now iPhones that were released in 2014 or earlier and cannot upgrade to iOS 15.1 will no longer be able to use the app, reports the Liverpool Echo. ‌ In terms of Android devices, the minimum requirement is Android OS 5.0, which was released way back in 2014 - over 11 years ago. However, users weren't surprised that the app was disappearing, as WhatsApp sent notifications warning its users that they need to "update to the latest version of iOS to continue using WhatsApp." This was sent to users who are running anything older than iOS 15.1 on their iPhones. In terms of Apple smartphones, those using an iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 or an iPhone 6 Plus will no longer be able to message through the Meta app. This is due to the devices not being compatible with iOS 18. For Android, phones like Samsung's Galaxy S III, the HTC One X, and the Sony Xperia Z will no longer be able to use WhatsApp. According to 9to5Mac, Meta has revealed on its FAQ page that the reason behind the decision to remove support of this app on older phones is because they do not have the latest updates or functionality required to run WhatsApp. ‌ Even Apple has disregarded these older models as over a year ago the tech brand declared that the iPhone 6 was "obsolete". This means that the company no longer repairs or services the device, and third-party service providers can no longer order parts for the product. While WhatsApp may have disappeared off legacy phones, the messaging service is becoming a more impressive service for those who still have access. In April of this year, the app announced that it was gaining 12 new features for users to enjoy. ‌ WhatsApp is currently one of the worlds most used messaging apps as over two billion people worldwide are active users of the service. On their blog, WhatsApp said: "To keep you in the loop, we'll be sharing regular roundups of the latest updates, tools, and settings." This roundup included the new features that have been recently rolled out, but shoppers may not be aware of. This includes: Chats Online indicator in group chats: To help you know if people are around to chat, you can now see how many people are 'online' in real-time, right under the group name. ‌ Highlight notifications in groups: You can use the new 'Notify for' setting and select 'Highlights' to limit notifications for @mentions, replies, and messages from saved contacts or 'All' to receive all notifications. Events updates: You can now create an event in a 1:1 conversation. WhatsApp has also added the ability to RSVP as 'maybe,' invite a plus one, add end date and time for longer events, and pin the event in a chat. Tappable reactions: Now you can quickly view everyone else's reactions and tap the one you want to send. ‌ Document scanning on iPhone: Scan and send documents directly from WhatsApp on iPhone. Select 'Scan document' from the attachment section and follow the steps to scan, crop, and save the document. To make the switch, go to Settings > Default Apps and select WhatsApp. ‌ Calls Pinch to zoom in video calls: iPhone users can now pinch to zoom in on a video while on a video call to get a closer look at your own or peer video. WhatsApp Is Not Working On These Android And iPhones And We Know Why

Last Updated: WhatsApp has stopped working on some of the popular Android phones and iPhone models and here's what it means for these users. WhatsApp is adding new features and the new updates bring improved security for billions but starting June 1, 2025, quite a few users and devices lost support for the messaging app. The warning was shared well in advance and the deadline was known to everyone. But even then WhatsApp users are being told again about the issue and why some of the older iPhones and Android phones will not get the latest features and have stopped working for good. So what had caused WhatsApp to stop supporting these many Android and iPhones? Well, I'll give you the answer. WhatsApp from June 1, 2025 onwards has lost support for a slew of Android phones as well as iPhones. WhatsApp for iPhones will stop working if you are still on the iOS 15.1 version which means you will need to get an iPhone that will run the later iOS versions. As we mentioned earlier, the messaging app was compatible with iPhones running iOS 12 version but that has ended now. But if you are still using Android phones and are worried about WhatsApp support going away then we can tell you that the new update is only applicable if somehow you still own an Android phone with version 5.0 or earlier. Here's the list of iPhones and Android phones that have become part of the latest WhatsApp culling: Why End WhatsApp Support? WhatsApp, why are you ending support on all these phones and iPhones? The main reason is linked to new features and the security of the users. The iPhone models given here lost support for iOS update a while back. iOS 15 is three-gen old now, so upgrading to a new iPhone, something like the iPhone 13 or 14 won't be a bad idea. WhatsApp recently added a new advanced chat privacy layer for its users which blocks people in chat and groups from copying your messages and media files like images and videos. By discontinuing support for older versions, WhatsApp can optimise its app and introduce innovative functionalities that would be incompatible with outdated operating systems. As operating systems and hardware age, they become unable to support advanced features like end-to-end encryption, video calling, and improved user interface options. Discontinuing support for outdated systems ensures WhatsApp can deliver a consistent and secure experience to its user base, which exceeds 3 billion remains a major concern. Older devices no longer receive updates from manufacturers like Apple and Google, leaving them vulnerable to security risks. WhatsApp has emphasized the need to use newer devices to maintain strong protection for personal users with devices listed above, several options are available: Upgrade the Device: Buying a new phone that supports iOS 15.1 or Android 5.1 (or higher) is the most reliable way to continue using WhatsApp. Update the Software: For users with iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, or SE (1st gen), updating to iOS 15.8.4 will maintain compatibility for now. Switch to Alternatives: Apps like Telegram and Signal may still function on older systems, though their feature sets and user bases differ. Back Up Chats: Before support ends, users are advised to back up their chat history. On iPhones, this can be done via iCloud; Android users can use Google Drive. To do so, go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup within the WhatsApp app. According to data from Apple in 2024, only about 5% of active iPhones are still running iOS 15 or earlier, suggesting that the change will affect a relatively small portion of users, particularly in developed markets. However, in regions with slower device turnover, the impact may be more more information, users can visit WhatsApp's official support page or check their phone's software version under Settings.
