BMW iX3 EV Is on the Way, Then a Sedan—and Neue Klasse ICE Models
BMW is doing some extreme climate testing of its Neue Klasse vehicles, one of which is set to be revealed in September and starting production this year. That's the BMW iX3, a two-row all-electric crossover that is smaller than the iX EV, which went on sale in November 2021.
The iX3 will be revealed at the IAA Mobility show in Munich in early September, with production starting late this year in Debrecen, Hungary, at BMW's first plant dedicated solely to fully electric vehicles. Following the iX3 will be more than 40 models of all drivetrain variants "in quick succession," including a "sporty sedan" as the second Neue Klasse vehicle in 2026. In 2027, BMW's main plant in Munich will begin building EVs as well, based on growing demand.
But the Neue Klasse platform will be flexible and its vehicles will not be solely battery-electric, as clarified today in Munich by BMW Chairman Oliver Zipse at the annual press conference. "We make no distinctions—whether we are talking about combustion engines, plug-in hybrids, all-electric vehicles or, from 2028, a hydrogen-powered car. Our approach is also gaining increasing recognition in political circles. Even our competitors are pivoting towards our strategy. We have proven that technological openness, growth, and CO₂ reduction are very much compatible."
An adaptable platform that can accommodate all propulsion systems makes sense right about now, as EV sales have slowed and as political winds have shifted in some parts of the world. But BMW isn't backing away from EVs. "Battery-electric vehicles continue to be our main growth driver," Zipse says.
