KS agency gives $40K to build Evergy Plaza ice-skating rink
TOPEKA (KSNT) – A new winter attraction is coming to downtown Topeka, and it's already making some progress. Evergy Plaza is building a new, permanent ice-skating rink, and it's cashing in on thousands of dollars from the state. On Friday, The Downtown Topeka Foundation received a $40,000 grant from the Kansas Tourism Board to move forward with construction. 'I think it will be a huge asset,' Downtown Topeka Foundation Board Member, Kurt Young said. Two years ago, the plaza did a trial run with a temporary rink. The ice-skating rink not only gives people the opportunity to skate, but it also drives foot traffic near local businesses in downtown Topeka. 'The temporary rink we did two years ago, some of the downtown businesses were genuinely upset that we were not able to do it the very next year,' Young said. What will happen to the old JCPenney space at West Ridge Mall? The next step in the project will be constructing the rink, and then adding finishing touches. Construction on the rink is expected to finish by winter 2026. For more local news, click here.
