World Day Against Child Labour 2025: Theme, history and global efforts

Every year, on June 12, World Day Against Child Labour is an occasion to promote awareness of child labour exploitation around the world and call for action. This day is an opportunity for us to refocus on the fact that children are forced into labour in exchange for an education. When we think of child labour, we think of children under 14 being forced to work in homes, shops, farms, factories and other communities because of poverty, coercion or Day Against Child Labour serves as a reminder for us to collectively take responsibility to ensure every child has access to education, safety and a nurturing upbringing. Despite ongoing efforts and significant progress, millions of children continue lives of hard work, under risky conditions which not only jeopardise their mental well-being, risk their lives but also their physical health. In India, the government is now implementing a National Policy on Child Labour, adopted in 1987. This policy underlines the rehabilitation of affected children and addresses the root cause of child labour — poverty and the economic status of their families.
