Americold breaks ground on cold storage facility at Port Saint John
Two new container cranes are seen in Saint John, N.B., on Dec. 3, 2024. (Avery MacRae/CTV Atlantic) The ground has been broken on the Saint John, N.B., harbour for Americold Realty Trust's first import-export hub in Canada. Americold, a global leader in temperature-controlled logistics, held a ceremony Thursday afternoon with officials from Port Saint John, DP World and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) Railway, among other local and provincial leaders. Americold says the facility will also be a first-of-its-kind worldwide to bring together its cold storage operations with the capabilities of DP World and the rail lines of CPKC. 'Developing this facility at Port Saint John marks an important step forward for Americold,' said Rob Chambers, president of Americas at Americold, in a news release. 'The infrastructure investments by DP World and CPKC alongside Port Saint John have attracted major global shipping lines to this location, and we are excited that our world-class cold storage facility and value-added services will support food flows between Central and Eastern Canada, Europe, South America and APAC.' Americold plans to cover the $100-million price tag to build the import-export hub. The company says the facility will improve trade routes between Canada the global markets, and increase Port Saint John's growing capacity. It will also improve import logistics and support economic growth. The build is anticipated to bring around $37 million in direct provincial gross domestic product (GDP). Opportunities NB is spending $1.01 million in the form of a payroll rebate to help Americold create up to 100 jobs by the end of 2029. 'We're thrilled to welcome Americold and the opportunities it brings to create jobs on our waterfront,' says Craig Bell Estabrooks, president and CEO of Port Saint John. 'Our extensive infrastructure investments have paved the way for leading global partners to thrive in Saint John.' The cold storage facility is the latest addition to the port's growing arsenal. Late last year the port received two new container cranes to bring its total to six. The newest cranes are larger then the previous four and boast an outreach of 65 metres. They can also reach up to 24 containers wide (the other four cranes can reach up to 21 containers wide) and can service ships with a capacity above 10,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit). All six cranes are operated by DP World Canada. 'Our partnership with Americold and CPKC reflects our shared commitment to transforming supply chain efficiency and sustainability' says Doug Smith, CEO of DP World Canada. 'This investment by Americold is a significant milestone in our joint mission to create seamless, end-to-end logistics solutions.' The new cold storage facility is slated to open sometime in 2026. New York Post Warns Donald Trump How He's Burning Out Even His Biggest Fans
The conservative New York Post broke ranks with MAGA world once again to issue a blunt 'warning to President Donald Trump' about one of his signature economic policies. 'Everyone, including your friends, is starting to get a brutal case of tariff burnout,' the tabloid's editorial board wrote this weekend. The newspaper said it didn't disagree with Trump's penchant for slapping duties on imported products, but argued the 'whiplash' of his on-off-on-off implementation of them is hiking uncertainty and angst among import-export businesses 'that builds with every surprise twist.' And 'even fans of the president's theater can get sick of endless drama,' it cautioned. Earlier this month, the usually Trump-boosting Post slammed as 'beyond awful' the optics of Trump's willingness to accept a Boeing 747-8 from Qatar, to be used as Air Force One and then transferred to Trump's post-presidential library. Jordan: ACT receives over 149,000 containers in first 4 months of 2025
AMMAN — Statistical data from the Jordanian Logistics Association (JLA) has shown that the number of containers loaded with imported goods via the Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) increased during the first third of the current year by 22.5 per cent, compared with the same period in 2024. The statistical data, cited by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, on Wednesday, showed that the number of incoming containers via the ACT during the first four months of 2025 rose to 149,178 containers, compared with 121,843 for the same period last year. The data also pointed to an increase in the number of containers loaded with goods exported from the Kingdom via the ACT during the January-April period of this year by 12.8 per cent, reaching 33,575 containers, compared with the same period in 2024 that witnessed 29,764 containers. The data showed an increase in the number of incoming containers via the ACT during April of the current year by 15.9 per cent, reaching 39,557 containers, compared with 34,135 containers in the same month of 2024. The JLA statistics also showed an increase in the number of containers exported via the ACT during April of this year by 13.8 per cent, rising to 7,882 containers, compared with 6,928 containers in the same month last year. JLA President Nabil Khatib told Petra that there has been a 'clear and notable' improvement in the number of containers arriving and departing through the ACT since the beginning of 2025, compared with the same period last year, particularly those loaded with goods bound for Syria and the West Bank. Khatib, who also serves as the first vice president of the Amman Chamber of Commerce, added that the return of ACT to its previous level of activity seen in earlier years would positively reflect on the momentum of commercial and service activity and various economic sectors in the Kingdom. The association was established in 2007 with the aim of representing workers in the shipping industry in Jordan, providing a competitive environment, protecting those working in the freight forwarding profession, and developing work systems for freight forwarders and logistics service providers. JLA maintains membership in the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA), which was established in 1926 in Vienna and is a non-governmental organisation.
