Tunisia Reiterates Support for a Libyan-Led Political Settlement

On Monday, Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti reaffirmed his country's commitment to participating constructively in all initiatives aimed at resolving the political crisis in Libya. Speaking during a ministerial consultation, Nafti stated that Tunisia supports any effort that can bring Libyans together under a single political framework, with support from the United Nations and neighboring countries. The meeting, hosted in the Egyptian capital, brought together the foreign ministers of Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia. It marked the latest round of discussions under the Tripartite Neighboring Countries Mechanism, aimed at coordinating regional positions on the situation in Libya. With political deadlock and security tensions rising, the three countries sought to renew momentum for a peaceful process. Nafti described Tunisia's position as firm in backing intra-Libyan dialogue without foreign interference. According to him, a homegrown agreement among Libyans remains the only sustainable path toward stability. He said such a solution must reflect the interests of the Libyan people and respond to their desire for peace, development, and state institutions that function effectively. The final statement from the Cairo meeting called on all parties in Libya to reduce tensions and stop any further escalation. It urged competing political actors to commit to a political process under UN guidance that could lead to national reconciliation and institutional reunification. The statement also renewed calls for holding presidential and parliamentary elections at the same time. The ministers expressed concern over the fragile state of Libya's political environment and warned that continued division would risk further violence and weaken the country's ability to recover. They also agreed that unified institutions are necessary for managing Libya's natural wealth, restoring public services, and ending the security vacuum that armed groups continue to exploit. The ministers from Tunisia, Egypt, and Algeria called for a joint regional effort to support Libya in restoring its sovereignty, unity, and political stability. They stressed that Libya's future should be shaped by its people through a transparent, inclusive process backed by international legitimacy.

OPEN// Egypt reaffirms support for UN-led political solution in Libya

CAIRO, April 11 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty met on Friday with his Tunisian counterpart Mohamed Ali Nafti and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Hanna Tetteh. The meeting was held on the sidelines of Abdelatty's participation in the Antalya Diplomacy Forum. During the meeting, the top diplomat emphasized the importance of the Libyan situation for Egypt's national security and interests, given that Libya is a direct neighboring country. He affirmed Egypt's support for United Nations efforts to initiate a political process aimed at resolving the crisis in Libya. Abdelatty stressed Egypt's efforts to support an intra-Libyan solution without foreign interference, or bypassing the role of Libyan national institutions, based on the reference of the Skhirat Agreement, leading to the simultaneous holding of presidential and parliamentary elections. He also underlined the importance of respecting Libya's sovereignty and territorial integrity, keeping it away from foreign interference, and the need for international efforts to enforce relevant UN resolutions calling for the withdrawal of all foreign forces, mercenaries, and foreign fighters from Libya, in a way that contributes to restoring security and stability. Libya: The Advisory Committee concludes its first meeting and agrees on rules of procedure

Facilitated by UNSMIL, the Advisory Committee concluded its inaugural two-day meeting in Tripoli. Participants engaged in productive discussions on the committee's rules of procedures and workplan including plans for the second meeting next week. They also held a structured discussion on the main contentious issues within the existing electoral framework. UNSMIL Deputy Special Representative Stephanie Koury emphasized that the Advisory Committee, a crucial component of the intra-Libyan political process, is tasked with generating concrete proposals to address these issues. 'While UNSMIL intends to implement a multi-track process, encompassing political, security, and economic tracks, the Advisory Committee must remain focused on the electoral framework, specifically the contentious issues preventing national elections,' Koury addressed the participants. 'The Committee is not a political forum. Its credibility hinges on maintaining this focus,' she added. The outcomes of the Advisory Committee's deliberations will be submitted to UNSMIL to inform the subsequent phases of the political process and support Libyan institutions and decision-makers as they work towards the holding of national elections. The Advisory Committee holds its first meeting, convened by United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL)

The Advisory Committee (AC) launched its work today with an inaugural meeting at the Headquarters of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in Tripoli. Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) Stephanie Koury welcomed the members and highlighted the AC's key role as part of the inclusive, intra-Libyan political process designed to break the current political impasse. Referencing her briefing to the Security Council last December, DSRSG Koury explained that the AC, is not a decision-making body. This Committee will generate technically sound and politically viable proposals to address contentious issues in the electoral framework. The Committee will be time-bound and its outcomes will be submitted to UNSMIL in preparation of the subsequent phases of the political process in support of Libyan institutions and decision-makers in facilitating the holding of national elections.
