Lalit Modi Thanks ‘Good Friend' Vijay Mallya For Buying RCB: ‘Biggest Sponsor...Give Credit'

Last Updated: Lalit Modi praised Vijay Mallya for being the first to back the IPL when it was still just an idea. Lalit Modi, the creator of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has put the spotlight back on one of the league's original team owners, Vijay Mallya. Sharing a clip from Vijay Mallya's recent interview with YouTuber Raj Shamani, Lalit Modi praised the former liquor baron for being the first to back the IPL when it was still just an idea. 'How did my good friend Vijay Mallya buy Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL I created? Hear from the man himself. He was the first person to support me blindly. He was also the league's biggest sponsor and has, since day one, been its most loyal, ardent fan and follower. For which I will always be grateful," he wrote on X. Modi further added, 'One must give credit where credit is due. He has always done more for the game and the fans than anyone living I know. And believe me, I know better than anyone else living. You may have your bias. But I am known to call a spade a spade." Mallya responded in his post with, 'Thank you Lalit." How did my good friend #vijaymallya buy @ team in the @iplt20 I created. Hear from the man himself. He was the first person to support me making the #ipl blindly. Also was its biggest sponsor and has since day one been its most loyal ardent fan and… — Lalit Kumar Modi (@LalitKModi) June 5, 2025 In the recent interview, Mallya opened up about how he got involved with the IPL. 'I was impressed with the pitch Lalit made to the BCCI committee about this league. He called me one day and said, 'Okay, fine. We're ready to go. Teams are going to be auctioned. Are you going to buy?'" he said. Mallya saw the league not just as a sporting opportunity but also as a smart way to promote his brands. 'In a country where cricket is a religion, what better platform can I have to promote my brands than through an IPL franchise? And I got greedy, I wanted one for Kingfisher and one for my whiskey brand, Royal Challenge," he continued. But the rules were clear. 'He said you can only have one. Then the bidding came and I was excited to promote one of my brands. So, I bid for three franchises. I lost Mumbai by a very small amount of money. But then I ended up the highest bidder for three and I had to choose one. So, I obviously chose Bangalore," he stated. Mallya purchased RCB in 2008 and the team rose to fame as one of the most talked-about franchises in the IPL. But their journey wasn't smooth. Under Mallya's leadership, RCB often attracted headlines for both cricket and controversy. In 2016, as legal troubles mounted over unpaid loans, Mallya lost control of the team. Since then, the ownership of RCB has rested with United Spirits Limited (USL), a major player in India's alcoholic beverage market and the second-largest liquor company in the world. This IPL season turned out to be historic for RCB. After 18 years, the team finally lifted its maiden IPL trophy in a thrilling final against Punjab Kings. Fans across the country erupted in celebration but the joy was tragically cut short when a stampede broke out outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium where fans had gathered to celebrate. At least 11 people lost their lives and 47 others were injured in the chaos. First Published:

"Patience Zaroori Hai": Delhi Police's Viral Post After RCB Wins IPL After 18 Years

When Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) took to the field in a packed Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad for the final game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, cricket fans knew one thing - they were going to get a new and first-time champion. In the 18th edition of cricket's marquee league, it was India's number 18 who finally added the missing feather to his cap. Virat Kohli, the former RCB captain who persisted with the franchise for 18 years despite all the highs and lows, lifted the only trophy that eluded him for nearly two decades. Celebrating RCB's win, the Delhi Police shared a post to draw home a point about being patient and not driving before you turn 18. " Virat jeet ke liye Patience zaroori hai! (You have to be patient for a huge win)," the Delhi Police wrote. The post also carried a note to people who insist on driving a car or riding a bike before turning 18. "See, they waited for 18 years and you're already insisting your parents let you drive or ride," the note read. ???? #Virat jeet ke liye Patience zaroori hai! @iplt20 @RCBTweets @imVkohli #RCBvsPBKS #iplfinal2025 #IPLFinals #IPL #IPL2025 #EeCupnamde — Delhi Police (@DelhiPolice) June 3, 2025 Reacting to the post, a father wrote: "Lovely. Right tweet at right time ???? well done @DelhiPolice — Anuj Jangid (@iAnujJangid) June 3, 2025 Coming back to the game, RCB, batting first, were off to a flying start, courtesy of Phil Salt and Virat Kohli. After Salt's dismissal, Kohli and Mayank Agrawal steadied the RCB innings. With contributions from Rajat Patidar, Liam Livingstone, and Jitesh Sharma, RCB set a target of 191. While chasing, PBKS, for the most part, stayed in the game despite losing wickets at regular intervals. However, it was Krunal Pandya's magical spell of 2-17 in four hours that turned the tie in RCB's favour. Apart from Pandya, Josh Hazlewood, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Yash Dayal also bowled well towards the end of the innings to secure the maiden title for their side. Shashank Singh's brilliant unbeaten 30-ball 61 brought PBKS close to the target but not close enough. He hit Hazelwood for three sixes and a four in the last over, but the team fell short by six runs. And it was Bengaluru and Virat Kohli's night to celebrate.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi wants to focus on representing India after becoming the youngest century maker in IPL

After a power-packed performance that helped Rajasthan Royals secure a crucial win last night, 14-year-old cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi has only one goal in mind—to play for India. The left-handed batter, who impressed everyone with his fearless hitting and calm mindset, says the journey is far from over. 'I want to play for India and contribute towards that,' Vaibhav said in an interview with 'So, I know I have to keep my head down and keep working hard. Hopefully one day I'd be good for my country too.' Having trained for years with this dream in mind, Vaibhav finally got his moment under the lights—and he delivered. 'I have been preparing for the IPL for a long time now, and so I am really happy because of all that tonight,' he shared. 'To train under Rahul sir has been like a dream come true.' A post shared by IPL (@iplt20) The youngster also credited the positive environment within the Rajasthan Royals camp. 'Sanju bhaiya, Yashasvi bhaiya, Riyan bhaiya and everyone else—they all encourage me. They tell me that, if I play well, I will contribute to the team and that's why my confidence is always high. Of course there are nerves, but with teammates like them, I don't feel that pressure much.' A post shared by Rajasthan Royals (@rajasthanroyals) Back home, the pride is evident. Vaibhav's father, Sanjiv Suryavanshi, who once dreamed of a cricketing career himself, said, 'We are truly grateful to the entire Rajasthan Royals management for taking such good care of Vaibhav, and they worked with him so much that everyone can see the results now. Of course Vaibhav was also working hard, but their contribution was also important. We are also grateful to the BCA, for recognising his potential at such a young age and giving him the right platform to showcase all his talent.' Vaibhav himself is quick to acknowledge his roots. 'Whatever I am today, I owe it to my parents... My mother would wake up early to cook for me, sleeping barely three hours. My father gave up his work, and my big brother took it over. We were struggling. Whatever success I have today is because of them,' he said.

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah fans are thrilled after IPL names its robot dog Champak: 'Jethalal approves this name'

Fans of the popular Hindi TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC) are thrilled with the name of the robot dog introduced in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year. The robotic dog, now officially named Champak, is being seen as a tribute to the beloved character of Champaklal Gada, played by actor Amit Bhatt, who is the father of Jethalal in the long-running comedy show. A post shared by IPL (@iplt20) The name was decided through an online fan poll conducted by the organisers and was formally announced via social media just before the high-profile match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday. According to IPL's official statement, the name Champak emerged as the fan-favourite, winning the poll, and sparking a wave of reactions across the internet. Many netizens, particularly fans of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, took to social media to express their amusement and appreciation for what they believe is a clever nod to the show. One user wrote on Instagram: 'Jethalal approved this name.' Another user, a fan of the show quipped: '100% of you will agree champak won because of champak chacha.' There were some fans who didnt approve of the name and suggested that the other alternatives were better. For those unfamiliar, IPL 2025 has taken an innovative step by introducing a robotic dog that mimics lifelike movements—it can walk, run, jump, and even stand on its hind legs. The robot is also equipped with a camera, allowing it to deliver unique visual perspectives of the tournament. The robotic dog was first unveiled ahead of the Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium last week. In a video shared by the IPL, former New Zealand cricketer and commentator Danny Morrison introduced the robot, calling it his new broadcast companion. He explained, 'It can walk, run, greet, but most importantly, it has the vision of a pet.' Since its debut, Champak has taken on various roles—including acting as the coin-bearer for the Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad match earlier this week. With its camera providing behind-the-scenes glimpses and its quirky presence on the field, Champak has added a fun, tech-savvy twist to the matchday experience, delighting both cricket enthusiasts and pop culture fans alike.
