‘I didn't know whether I'd walk properly again' – James Milner opens up on injury hell as he plans to play into his 40s

JAMES MILNER feared he may never walk again after suffering nerve damage during an operation. The former England international missed the lion's share of the 2024/25 season for Brighton after having surgery following a knee injury last August. 3 3 A nerve, however, ended up being damaged during his knee reconstruction and left him unable to lift his feet or toes. The 39-year-old recalled: 'I had a contact injury in training before the Arsenal game on my knee. 'It was stable and we gave it a go and my hamstring reacted. "I had a knee operation and knee reconstruction, which was fine and I would have been back at the start of December. 'But in the operation, a nerve got damaged. After the operation, I couldn't lift my foot or my toes. "The first time I saw any flicker of life was the 31st of December. Milner's road to recovery has been a long and arduous one, to say the least. He continued: 'It's been a long, tough road. The medical staff have been incredible, [club physio] Sean Duggan has been absolutely unbelievable. JOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUS 3 'There was a chance I might not have come back at all. I didn't know if I could walk normally again, never mind play football. "But, thankfully, the hard work's paid off. And to get on the field today [Sunday] with the boys and see them turn it around in the second half and be a part of that was special. My dad was in same England squad as James Milner before injury heartbreak - now I'm making my own way in Premier League 'I've been on the grass for a good few months now, but I just need to be careful with contact. "I've just run out of time. If the season was next week, I think I would have been fit from now on. 'It's not age-related, it's just one chance in however many thousand. "It was just a bit of bad luck after starting the season well and feeling good.' Milner returned to action on the final day of the season last weekend, in which Brighton romped to a 4-1 win over Europa League winners Tottenham. And the veteran is hoping to earn a new contract at the Amex, which will see him play top-flight football at the ripe old age of 40. He said: "I started the season well, I look at my fitness now and I feel good. I didn't know if I could walk normally again, never mind play football." James Milner "Coming on against Tottenham, I would like to keep playing, I've definitely got another year left in me. "I think we're quite close, so it will be nice to be here and be part of the team and help the boys. 'You look at the season we have had. We have good players and good results. "But there have been times when we've dropped points and shouldn't have done. You need a bit of experience. 'You look at the players that have come in, the likes of Mats Wieffer and Brajan Gruda, difficult coming to a new team and country. "But look how good they've been in last few weeks. It takes time. 'I'm excited for next year for sure. Hopefully I can be a part of it."

Ex-Liverpool star James Milner insists that he can still play into his FORTIES despite Brighton defender's season being marred by injuries

James Milner wants to keep playing into his 40s after fighting back from a knee injury and complications that threatened to end his glittering career. Milner came on for the closing minutes of Brighton 's victory at Tottenham on Sunday, his first appearance since August. He was fit and ready to return from the knee surgery in December only to be set back by nerve damage. 'I couldn't lift my foot or my toes, not an ideal scenario,' said the 39-year-old, renowned for his deadpan delivery. 'I didn't know whether I would be able to walk properly again let alone play football. 'There was a chance I might not have come back at all. Nobody said quit. But with my age it was highly unlikely I would get back. I think that was one of the things that drove me most. My first aim was to try and get the knee as strong as possible which I did.' Milner has been back in training for months but under medical orders to take it easy with any contact. 'It's been a long, tough road,' he said. 'I don't think many would have come back from this. The medical staff have been incredible. We worked hard and thankfully it has paid off. I've just run out of time with the season. If the season was next week, I would be fit.' Milner, who joined Brighton on a free from Liverpool in 2023, is out of contract. 'I'd like him to be here next season, but we are in discussions, let's see how he will come back,' said Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler after the win at Spurs, and praised his contribution off the pitch. Milner made his Premier League debut for Leeds at the age of 16 and won the title with both Manchester City and Liverpool. He lifted the FA Cup and League Cup with both clubs and the Champions League with Liverpool in 2019. He won 61 England caps from 2009-16. His appearance for Brighton at Spurs on Sunday was his 881st in senior club football and hopes it won't be the last. 'I would like to keep playing,' said Milner, who will be 40 in January. 'I look at my fitness now and I feel good. I've definitely got another year left in me. We're in talks with the club and quite close so it will be nice to be here and be part of the team and help the boys. Hopefully I can be part of it.'

Bulldogs blow, star's season over

Western Bulldogs forward Cody Weightman won't play a game in 2025 after the club opted to place him on the inactive list for the remainder of the season due to a lingering knee injury. The Bulldogs made the move ahead of Wednesday's mid-season draft, freeing up a spot on the list. 'Western Bulldogs forward Cody Weightman has been placed on the club's inactive list for the remainder of the 2025 season due to a knee injury,' the club said in a brief statement. 'The vacancy will now open a second spot on the Bulldogs' list ahead of the mid-season draft on Wednesday night.' Weightman, 24, hasn't played a game in 2025 after undergoing surgery in February to address a rare congenital condition called bipartite patella, which involves a false joint that sits within his kneecap bone. He's had several setbacks and underwent more surgery early in May. The club had been hopeful of a 2025 return, but that hope has now been dashed. The Gold Coast Suns have allayed any fears of a serious ankle injury to Mac Andrew and he could yet line up against Fremantle this week. Andrew arrived home on Monday on crutches and in a moon boot after leaving the field late in his team's win over St Kilda at Marvel Stadium on Sunday. Andrew was diagnosed with ankle sprain only and he'll be assessed later in the week before his availability is confirmed. 'Mac has an ankle sprain and has shown improvement in the days since the match,' Suns physio Lindsay Bull said. 'We will continue to monitor how his ankle responds in the coming days before determining his availability for Saturday's match against Fremantle.' Hawthorn veteran Luke Breust could return from a back issue to boost the Hawks for Friday's huge clash with Collingwood. 'He's got moving and it's started to improve quite quickly now, the back issue from the knock he received two weeks ago,' Hawthorn high performance manager Peter Burge said. 'We've got one session to come this week with the short week, so it will be line ball how much he gets out on Wednesday. We'll make more of a decision around his availability closer to the weekend. If not this week, it will be next week.'
