False subtitles misrepresent Kim Jong Un speech as support for West Java governor
"Kim Jong-un speaks about West Javan Governor Dedi Mulyadi, he respects him so much," reads Indonesian-language text superimposed on a TikTok video posted on May 6, 2025. The video features photos of Dedi Mulyadi and North Korea's Kim Jong Un above a clip of Kim speaking. Subtitles on the clip, purportedly translating what Kim was saying, read: "Corruption has slowed Indonesia's development. This culture must be changed, beginning with its young generation. I fully support West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi's policy to educate Indonesian students and teenagers so they become obedient and disciplined." The text refers to a programme where students labelled "naughty" are sent to military barracks for 14 days of character education (archived link). According to a BBC Indonesia report about the programme, some psychologists and education experts have questioned its efficacy and whether it may have a detrimental impact on the teens' development. The clip was also shared in similar posts elsewhere on TikTok. "What else can you say about Mr Governor? A foreign country praises him, so why do his own people in the country mock him?" reads a comment on one of the posts. Another said: "Thank you to his excellency Mr Kim Jong-un for supporting Dedi Mulyadi." The video, however, does not show Kim praising Dedi or the education programme. AFP previously debunked another claim using the same video with different subtitles to make it appear as if Kim were commenting on a local corruption case. A reverse image search on Google led to the same footage uploaded to YouTube by the North Korea Now news outlet on February 13, 2024 (archived link). The YouTube video is titled, "Kim orders military to prepare for the occupation of S. Korean territory". The clip used in the false posts starts at the YouTube video's 25:37 mark, when Kim speaks about the importance of the military in maintaining peace. "Our military must possess even stronger power, prevent war and unconditionally safeguard peace with its irresistible force. Peace is not something to beg for or negotiate," says Kim. "Let us remember once again that war is not advertised in advance. We must always maintain a state of readiness." He makes no mention of the Indonesian governor or his education policy. A transcript of Kim's speech was also included in a report in the newspaper of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party, Rodong Sinmun, on February 9, 2024 (archived link). The transcript also shows Kim did not mention Dedi.

‘Clean up or be removed': Prabowo warns Indonesian officials as calls grow for cabinet reshuffle
JAKARTA, June 3 — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has warned cabinet ministers and government officials against corruption, vowing to remove those who fail to uphold clean governance amid growing calls for a cabinet reshuffle. Speaking at a ceremony marking the birth of the state ideology Pancasila on Monday, Prabowo said the country's biggest weakness lies in the mindset of its political elite and officials entrusted with public duties, according to a report published in The Jakarta Post today. 'There is still far too much misappropriation, far too much corruption and far too much manipulation taking place within the government itself,' he said. 'On behalf of the people, I warn all elements in every institution: immediately clean yourselves up, [or else] the state will take action.' The president said he would not tolerate disloyalty, law-breaking or constitutional violations, regardless of political ties, family connections or affiliations. 'The wealth of the nation must be enjoyed by all its people. All misappropriations and leakages must stop. Any official unable to carry out their duties should step down before I remove them,' he added. His remarks come amid mounting public pressure to reshuffle the cabinet, although no official announcements have been made. Prabowo delivered his speech at the Foreign Ministry's Pancasila building, where the event was also attended by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. Also present was Megawati Soekarnoputri, head of the Pancasila Ideology Development Agency (BPIP) steering committee and leader of the opposition Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).

Indonesia Summons Singapore Oil Traders in Pertamina Graft Probe
Indonesian investigators have asked Singapore-based oil traders to attend meetings in the city-state next week as part of a $12 billion corruption probe into state-owned oil firm PT Pertamina. The requests from the attorney general's office come after earlier notices were sent over the past month, seeking cooperation in the investigation into alleged corrupt practices at Pertamina. Previously, the AGO had asked the traders to attend in-person meetings in Jakarta, and also suggested the office of Singapore's Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau as a possible venue, without specifying a date.

Indonesia probes alleged ‘criminal conspiracy' in education ministry's US$616 million procurement of laptops
JAKARTA: Indonesia has launched a probe into alleged corruption involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops worth about 10 trillion rupiah (US$615.8 million) by the Education Ministry. The laptops were procured from 2019 to 2023 as part of a nationwide digitalisation project during former president Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's tenure, and aimed to support public schools, said the Attorney General's Office (AGO) on Monday (May 26). 'Roughly 1,000 Chromebooks had earlier been tested and showed poor performance, yet the procurement went ahead,' said Harli Siregar, head of the AGO's Legal Information Centre, at a press conference in Jakarta, as quoted by news portal Jakarta Globe. Kompas reported that investigators under the Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes issued a 'formal investigation' warrant on May 20. The AGO is now summoning government officials and private company representatives involved in the project for questioning. Harli, however, declined to name specific individuals or entities, local media reported. Authorities suspect there was collusion or 'criminal conspiracy' among those involved in drafting studies to justify the procurement. 'There may have been manipulation and forced procurement, leading to significant waste of state funds,' Harli was quoted as saying by Jakarta Globe. He said there was a lack of need for Chromebooks in Indonesia as these laptops largely require internet connectivity, while internet access across the country remains uneven, Kompas reported. 'Spending such a massive sum of public money on devices that do not match the actual needs of students raises serious red flags,' Harli said. While the total financial loss from the project is still being calculated, Kompas reported that the estimated budget allocated to the Chromebook procurement was 9.9 trillion rupiah. The procurement took place during the tenure of Nadiem Makarim, who led the Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministry from 2019 to 2024 under Jokowi's administration. When President Prabowo Subianto took over in October last year, the ministry was restructured into multiple entities overseeing primary and secondary education, higher education, culture, and research and technology. Other high-level probes have been reported in Indonesia in recent months. In January, the Corruption Eradication Commission said trillions of rupiah channelled by Indonesia's central bank to some lawmakers under a corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme were allegedly misused. In October last year, former trade minister Thomas Lembong was arrested for suspected involvement in a corruption case involving sugar imports that allegedly caused state losses of about 400 billion rupiah. Thomas served as trade minister between August 2015 and July 2016.

Singapore traders drawn into Indonesia's US$12 billion Pertamina corruption probe
Indonesian authorities have contacted a number of Singapore-based trading companies to request their cooperation in a US$12 billion corruption inquiry involving state-owned oil giant PT Pertamina. The oil traders received notices earlier this month, asking them to assist the office of Indonesia's attorney general by answering questions on overall governance and past transactions, according to several people who were sent or saw the invitation. They asked not to be identified as they are not authorised to speak publicly. Earlier communication had sought to invite traders to Jakarta, but the people said the latest missive, sent from a Pertamina email address, specified interviews would be conducted at Singapore's Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau, without confirming dates. There is no suggestion that those called to assist have been accused of any wrongdoing. Indonesian authorities arrested executives from Pertamina subsidiaries in February on accusations that they pushed refiners to import marked-up crude and oil products from abroad, causing state losses. More executives, including Nicke Widyawati, the company's former chief executive, have since been questioned in a widening investigation. President Prabowo Subianto has sought to strengthen his grip on Indonesia's state-owned enterprises since taking office last year. These – including Pertamina – have been consolidated into a new investment fund, Danantara, which reports directly to him. Shortly after his inauguration last year, Subianto also appointed a senior member of his political party to Pertamina's top role. A PT Pertamina worker climbs on a gauge at a crude oil well. Indonesia relies on energy imports, with Singaporean firms frequently taking part in Pertamina's petrol and crude oil tenders.
