Paul & Paula's Patch
Jerry visits a bush block in Brisbane's south-west has been transformed into a grand cottage garden. Owners: Paula and Paul Herbert Location: Mount Crosby, Qld, on Yuggera Country Climate Zone: Subtropical Garden Established: More than 15 years ago Style: Grand cottage garden Key Features Jerry first notices the lovely balance of light and shade in the garden. All the elements of design are used here: repetition, colour, texture, unity and space. There are many nectar-producing plants, which bring in lots of birds. Grass trees were planted as tiny seedlings about 15 years ago and are now about 1.5m tall. Other strappy plants include a variegated lomandra, miscanthus, carex and gymea lilies. Paula has loved gardening since she was a little child and now has Paul hooked, too – this is the third garden they've created together. Paula has the ideas and Paul puts them into action! The garden is a showpiece for Paula's creativity too; she is a painter and clay artist. Paula has a particular passion for Casuarina 'Green Wave' and surprises Paul by admitting there are 90 of them in the garden. While she has no horticultural training, she got on so well with the staff at the local garden centre that she was offered a job. The open spaces and borders are defined by hedges, but few are in straight lines. Being at a slight elevation and away from the coastal humidity, they are able to grow Manchurian pears and other deciduous trees. A downside of their location is the strong south-easterly summer wind, however the hedging helps reduce its impact. Some of the hedges are planted with mock orange, which is a serious weed in the area, as birds carry the seed into the bush, but the Herberts are diligent in trimming off any seed heads that form. An old kids' cubby house has been transformed into a chook shed, complete with a bird 'chandelier'. GRASS TREE Xanthorrhoea sp. VARIEGATED MAT-RUSH Lomandra cv. CHINESE SILVER GRASS Miscanthus sinensis 'Flamingo' * JAPANESE SEDGE Carex 'Feather Falls' GYMEA LILY Doryanthes excelsa SWAMP SHE-OAK Casuarina glauca 'Green Wave' * MOCK ORANGE Murraya paniculata * ROSEMARY Salvia rosmarinus cv. * Check before planting: this may be an environmental weed in your area

I'm a pro garden designer and there's a common decoration I absolutely hate – it's ugly, plastic & always looks dead
A GARDENING designer has revealed the one common decoration she absolutely hates. They can look splendid in summer, but Pollyanna Wilkinson shared how she has a pet peeve of hanging baskets. 5 5 5 Speaking on her podcast, The Ins & Outs, Pollyanna responded to a listener who had written into the show asking if hanging baskets should be left in the 80s and 90s. The gardening designer didn't hold back with her response and said: 'I gift you the whole cold, hard truth, my friend, I hate them. 'Hate them. I effing hate hanging baskets. 'And the reason I hate them is much the same reason that I hate small pots.' She shared the first reason for this is that she doesn't think they are 'very attractive as a vessel.' Pollyanna explained on the latest episode: 'You can tend to see the plastic inside because it's got a plastic liner, because otherwise, obviously the water is going to go through. 'And I don't like seeing plastic in the garden. 'And also the body of soil that a hanging basket holds - unless it's those amazing ones outside the Ritz, which are just the most extraordinary thing I've ever seen, but those are the sides of a beach ball - it's just, it's this tiny little dish of mud.' On the other side of the debate, Pollyanna's podcast co-host, interior design expert Jojo Barr, defended hanging baskets. She shared: 'I know, but when they come out and they're in bloom, they do look kind of nice.' Aldi is selling a cheap $4.49 item that will transform your garden into a colorful summer paradise Pollyanna responded: 'If you look after them and you and they are abundant, and you remember to water them and you fill them with things, they are spectacular. 'But I personally think life is too short for hanging baskets. There I said it. 'I would rather grow plants up the house than have a hanging basket. 5 'I think the problem is, they often look half dead, don't they?' However, the gardening expert did reply to the listener who wrote in and added: 'Please don't take offense if you have them and you love them and you manage to fill them with amazing things. 'I'm a big believer that gardening takes a lot of work and so you should choose where you spend your time and I wouldn't spend it on hanging baskets.' BASKET TIPS 5 If you do have hanging baskets and want to ensure they look beautiful all summer long, some gardening professionals have shared their tips. According to gardening experts Jim and Mary Competti at This Is My Garden, many hanging baskets will experience foliage fading and scarce blooms during hot weather. The gardening maestros stressed that gardening enthusiasts "need to fertilise" hanging baskets to keep newly planted baskets flowering. However, fertilising hanging baskets is not a one-time task, but rather one that should be done regularly. Hanging basket plants have restricted soil available for energy absorption and cannot spread out to seek additional nutrients, which makes this process incredibly vital.

Luxescape Design Announces National Expansion and Tech-Driven Approach to Landscape Design
Luxescape Design expands its franchise network and brings drone-powered landscape design to the forefront of the industry. Australia, May 8, 2025 -- Redefining the Future of Outdoor Spaces with Smart, Scalable Solutions Luxescape Design, the Australian-based landscape design company led by founder Brett Ingwersen, has announced plans for nationwide and international expansion as it scales its tech-driven franchise model. The business, which began as a local operation five years ago, is leveraging advanced tools like drones, LiDAR, 360-degree imaging, and augmented reality (AR) to transform how landscapes are visualized, designed, and delivered. The announcement marks a key moment in the company's evolution, as it rapidly grows its presence along Australia's east coast and prepares to enter new global markets over the next 18 months. From Garden Centre to Digital Landscape Innovation The seeds of Luxescape Design were sown in the early 2000s when Brett Ingwersen owned a retail garden centre. Clients frequently asked for landscape designs, and Brett observed how traditional methods—tape measures, laser levels, and site revisits—were inefficient and limiting. A pivotal moment came during a conversation with business futurist Craig Rispin. Their collaboration revealed how drones and 3D modeling technology could disrupt and improve the landscape design process. The insights led to the formation of Luxescape Design, a company now built around tech-enhanced design workflows that prioritize accuracy, speed, and accessibility. 'Your home is your haven,' says Ingwersen. 'It should be a place for entertaining, relaxing, playing, and having fun. It should also add value to your property, as well-executed landscaping is an investment, not an expense.' Franchise Growth and Vertical Integration Drive Business Expansion With several operational franchises already established along the east coast, Luxescape Design is scaling its model to attract aspiring entrepreneurs seeking opportunities in a future-ready industry. The company's franchise system supports partners with access to technology, training, and a proven workflow that accelerates project turnaround and client satisfaction. Beyond franchising, Luxescape Design is creating a vertically integrated supply chain, offering everything from plant production to garden accessories and even post-project maintenance plans. The company grows many of its own plants and landscape materials, while also working closely with construction teams to ensure a cohesive execution from design to build. This full-spectrum approach aims to simplify the customer journey and provide franchisees with a turnkey solution that extends beyond traditional design services. Technology as a Cornerstone of Modern Landscaping The incorporation of emerging technologies has been a cornerstone of Luxescape's appeal. Each project begins with a comprehensive data capture using drones, LiDAR scanning, photogrammetry, and 360 cameras. These digital assets are then processed into highly detailed 3D models, giving clients a realistic and immersive view of their future outdoor space before any physical work begins. This method not only reduces site visits but also shortens design timelines and improves collaboration between stakeholders. 'Our use of drones and data-driven models means we can finish designs faster and more accurately than most traditional firms,' says Ingwersen. 'It's about making the process seamless, not just for clients but for the business owners who join our network.' Positioning for Global Influence in Tech and Design As Luxescape prepares for its international rollout, the company is targeting media coverage and strategic partnerships within the technology, franchising, and small business communities. Ingwersen is also exploring opportunities to speak at industry events and join podcasts that discuss entrepreneurship, innovation, and the future of design. The founder's unique blend of horticultural experience and technological foresight has positioned him as a thought leader at the intersection of green spaces and digital innovation. Luxescape's mission now extends beyond beautiful landscapes—it's about enabling a new generation of designers and business owners to thrive in a modernized, tech-forward industry.
