Nurul Izzah mooted 2nd deputy president's post, says Rafizi

Nurul Izzah Anwar had made the offer three days before PKR delegates cast their votes in the central leadership elections, said Rafizi Ramli. AMPANG JAYA : Rafizi Ramli who was defeated at the PKR elections last month, says Nurul Izzah Anwar had previously suggested the creation of an appointed post of PKR deputy president for Rafizi to fill. Rafizi said the offer, which he rejected, was made by Nurul Izzah at a meeting three days before PKR delegates cast their ballots in the party's central leadership elections. 'When she met me, she tried to propose having an appointed deputy president – me. But even if it were to be an appointed party president, I'm not interested, all the more other party posts,' he said today. 'Because this isn't a question of posts but the message we want to convey,' he said when met at an event organised by his Pandan parliamentary office here today. Rafizi failed to secure re-election as deputy president last month, losing to Nurul Izzah who received 9,803 votes to his 3,866 votes. He subsequently offered his resignation from his Cabinet post as economy minister. He said today that he will resume his duties as a normal MP and the head of the party's Pandan division. He is on leave from his official duties while his resignation is effective June 17. Rafizi had previously revealed that he had rejected a last-ditch appeal from Nurul Izzah to help her after the party polls ended. Rafizi said he believed that her plea stemmed from concerns over the new leadership lineup, which she feared would bring trouble for Anwar Ibrahim and PKR.

Fahmi disputes Rafizi's claim PKR political bureau agreed on no polls

PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil regretted that the central leadership elections had caused a commotion within the party, saying he wanted the tensions to be alleviated. JOHOR BAHRU : PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil has disputed party deputy president Rafizi Ramli's claim that its political bureau had initially agreed not to hold party elections this year. Fahmi said this was not true and expressed regret that the campaign period for the PKR leadership polls was being used to spread incorrect information. He urged all candidates to use their remaining hours of campaigning to canvass for votes in a healthy manner and to convey accurate information to PKR delegates. 'I regret that when given the platform, sometimes, inaccurate and incorrect information is spread to the point that the media would ask me whether it's true. '(He claimed that) the PKR political bureau had decided not to hold party elections this year. That's not true,' he said during a campaign event with PKR deputy presidency hopeful Nurul Izzah Anwar here today. Fahmi added that he regretted that the central leadership elections had caused a commotion within PKR, saying he wanted tensions to be alleviated. Last Saturday, Rafizi claimed PKR's political bureau agreed to hold the party polls only after the next general election for fear of the party being thrown into disarray by fierce contests for top posts. He said this decision was reversed on grounds that the party elections were needed to bring in 'new talent' such as R Ramanan and Kamil Munim, who are both aligned with Nurul Izzah.

Halt personal attacks, baseless claims, PKR candidates told

Delegates to PKR's national congress, which will be held in Johor Bahru, will cast their votes on May 23. PETALING JAYA : PKR's disciplinary board has warned candidates against making open personal attacks and baseless claims against one another in campaigning for the central leadership elections. The board's chairman, Tan Yee Kew, said every PKR member reflected the party's image and that public trust could only be won through ethical and honourable behaviour as well as transparency. She urged candidates to preserve the party's integrity, image and unity throughout the election period, reminding them that there were guidelines they were required to adhere to. Tan urged them to stop all forms of attacks against party members as well as the spread of baseless allegations. 'Focus your campaign on policies and ideas. Personal attacks, open quarrels and public statements that insult party members are unnecessary, unacceptable, and can threaten the party's unity. 'Any accusation made against other parties must be supported by solid evidence. Making baseless accusations is an offence under the code of ethics for PKR members,' she said in a statement. The former Wangsa Maju MP also said the disciplinary board has zero tolerance for money politics, whether in the form of bribes, gifts or any kind of kickback in the party polls. She said that those who commit such offences would face immediate disciplinary action. She also said criticism on the campaign trail should be based on policies and ideas, not the personal character of candidates. 'The use of discriminative language, character assassination or rhetoric that provokes anger will tarnish the party's reputation and is an offence under the code of ethics,' she said. Tan said the board would be keeping an eye on the behaviour of candidates as well as their supporters, with stern action, including sacking, to be taken against those who breached the PKR code of ethics. All eyes are on the race for the PKR deputy presidency, which involves a straight fight between incumbent Rafizi Ramli and Nurul Izzah Anwar, the daughter of party president Anwar Ibrahim. There are also 12 contestants vying for the four vice-president's posts, including the four incumbents – federal ministers Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Chang Lih Kang as well as menteris besar Amirudin Shari and Aminuddin Harun. Several candidates have traded barbs following the nominations, with Rafizi particularly coming under fire from various division leaders as they urged Nurul Izzah to challenge him for the deputy presidency. Rafizi had also taken digs at several figures, including PKR election committee chairman Dr Zaliha Mustafa over her handling of the party's divisional elections. Delegates to PKR's national congress, which will be held in Johor Bahru, will cast their votes on May 23.

Democracy in Crisis at the DNC

Remember last winter when Democratic National Committee officials struggled to explain their convoluted rules on gender diversity to an uncomprehending public? Now DNC officials are implicitly saying that they didn't understand the rules either—and are laying the groundwork for a purge of two of the winners in the party's leadership elections. Is this still the party that presents itself as the guarantor of democracy? Dylan Wells and Patrick Svitek report for the Washington Post:
