3,600 pairs of new Maine license plates to be replaced after printing error
Jun. 6—The state will replace thousands of newly issued license plates after a printing error, the Department of the Secretary of State said. About 3,600 pairs of license plates were printed with the wrong amount of space between numbers and letters, office spokesperson Jana Spaulding said on a Friday evening phone call. She said the erroneous license plates were printed within the same time frame. "It could potentially cause an issue with E-ZPass and other things that do that character reading," she said. "Obviously an inconvenience, which is unfortunate, but was caught quickly." The new plates, which feature a pine tree reminiscent of the 1901 state flag, are being manufactured in Canada. They began replacing Maine's time-honored chickadee plates last month. The 3,600 drivers who were issued the faulty plates are being notified by letter. The office will mail impacted drivers replacement plates and sticker tags at no cost. They should arrive in August, though the timeline may change, the bureau said in its letter. In the meantime, drivers are asked to use the errant plates and notify the Bureau of Motor Vehicles of any issues related to scanning, Spaulding said. "It's a relatively minor, short-term error," she said, adding that the issue affected only "3,600 out of a few million" the agency intends to distribute this year. Those who receive replacement plates can return the faulty ones to the BMV or hold onto them as a keepsake, but they should not be used on a vehicle, Spaulding said. Copy the Story Link

Hundreds of tickets written to Colorado drivers with expired license plates
CBS Colorado is learning more about the one-month license plate enforcement period conducted across the state. Eight law enforcement agencies in Colorado, including three across the Denver metro area, ticketed anyone they saw driving with expired license plates. The agencies include the Denver Police Department, the Aurora Police Department, and the Colorado State Patrol Commerce City division. CBS The enforcement period lasted from April 20 through May 20. During this time, Denver police issued 656 registration violations, 276 driver's license violations, one impounded vehicle, 47 in-custody arrests, 180 warnings and one parking violation. Aurora police wrote 378 registration violation tickets during that time frame. Colorado State Patrol is still narrowing down its enforcement data, but has written more than 10,000 tickets from Jan. 1 through May 20. Troopers with Colorado State Patrol say if you wait too long, the DMV could kick your vehicle out of the system. "The longer you wait, the more problematic it is because the fees will increase," said Colorado State Trooper Rey Avila. "After a year, the license plate is no longer valid. Your vehicle is unregistered, so that license plate will not be good anymore. When you do go to register it again, you have to pay for new plates, new registration, and potentially face some fees for not paying it the year before." A Colorado State Patrol officer speaks to a driver. CBS The law enforcement agencies involved say even though the enforcement was scheduled to end May 20, they will still be ticketing anyone with expired license plates. The agencies suggest going to the DMV, setting up an appointment and getting it handled before your 30-day grace period is up.

Japan to scrap monochrome special license plates
The transport ministry is considering abolishing monochromatic versions of "gotochi" special vehicle registration plates designed by local governments, it was learned. The ministry will allow only multicolor versions of gotochi license plates from as early as the next round of solicitations for plate designs, in an effort to ease the burden on license plate makers amid an expected increase in demand. License plates with special designs were introduced in 2017. There are 73 types of gotochi plates, issued to residents of the local governments that created the designs, and two types available to drivers nationwide, including a design related to the World Exposition in the western city of Osaka. Currently, applicants for specially designed license plates can choose between multicolor and monochromatic versions. The ministry is mulling a review of the criteria for introducing gotochi license plates. After the review, such plates are expected to be more widely available across the country. But the need to create both multicolor and monochromatic versions of the same plate design is a major burden on license plate makers and is feared to weigh on license plate supply, especially amid a spike in prices of aluminum used to make the plates. The ministry decided to consider offering only multicolor versions of both gotochi and nationally available designs after an expert panel pointed out the issue. However, monochromatic versions of designs are popular among drivers of minivehicles who want to avoid using the yellow license plates designated for the vehicle type. The ministry will discuss offering nationally available license plates with subdued colors, in light of complaints that all existing multicolor designs are too colorful. Fees paid by license plate purchasers stand at around ¥2,000 for ordinary plates and around ¥10,000 for specially designed plates, with a donation of at least ¥1,000 necessary for multicolor versions. Such donations are expected to increase by over ¥370 million per year after monochromatic versions of specially designed plates are scrapped. Donated funds are used to improve transportation services.

Suffolk resident warns others about license plate thefts
SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Thieves are finding license plates more valuable these days, and some residents in the Harbour View area of northern Suffolk found out the hard way as they awoke on a recent morning to find their tags missing. 'My car was facing out, so I did not notice it right away,' said resident Anna Guibas. 'It wasn't until I came home that I was parked facing the building and I walked around the front of the vehicle and noticed that my entire tags, my license plate was missing.' She wasn't the only one in this apartment complex. Guibas said the crime likely occurred overnight, and it probably took the thief just a few minutes to take the plates. 'I felt violated because this is my personal property,' Guibas said, noting she filed a police report. Suffolk Police say if this happens to you, to take swift action. Go to the DMV to get new plates. and update your information like your E-ZPass, so thieves don't run up a toll bill on your account. Though Guibas has done these things, she's still nervous about what could happen now that her plates may be on a vehicle that could be anywhere. 'If they're committing crimes and they are using my tags, there are consequences because it's been reported stolen,' Guibas said. 'Hopefully they'll find whoever has done this.' She has now installed anti-theft screws for her new plates, and she's also considering getting a license plate cover and recommends others to do the same. 'I was very frustrated': Portsmouth woman has license plates stolen on two separate occasions This kind of crime has also been happening in other Hampton Roads cities such as Portsmouth, so it's a reminder to stay vigilant.
