LIST: Strongest recorded earthquakes in East Tennessee
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A 4.1 magnitude earthquake was confirmed in East Tennessee Saturday morning near the Tennessee-North Carolina state line by the U.S. Geological Survey. Although for the earthquake was felt across the region, it is not among the top five strongest magnitude earthquakes recorded by the USGS in the 6 News region. According to USGS, the earthquake happened about 12 miles southeast of Greenback around 9:04 a.m. and was around 16 miles deep. 4.1 magnitude earthquake confirmed in East Tennessee 6 News reviewed USGS records from as early as 1900 to find the highest magnitude earthquakes in our viewing area. Preliminary 4.1 magnitude earthquake jolts Tennessee, parts of Georgia and North Carolina
An earthquake of 4.1 preliminary magnitude jolted parts of the southern U.S. on Saturday morning. The quake hit about 13 miles from Greenback, Tennessee, which is about 30 miles south of Knoxville, the U.S. Geological Survey said, around 9 a.m. local time. Residents in Atlanta and parts of western North Carolina reported on social media feeling the tremors. An earthquake of 4.1 preliminary magnitude was reported Saturday morning in Tennessee and was felt in Atlanta, Georgia, and western North Carolina, according to the US Geological Survey and local news reports. The website for USGS said the earthquake originated shortly after 9 a.m. EDT about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from Greenback, Tennessee, which is about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Knoxville.
