Earthquake confirmed in Cumberland, Coles Counties Monday Night
UPDATE: The USGS has revised the earthquake down to a magnitude 3.3 earthquake. It also occurred about 6 miles deep, additional analysis Coles-Moultrie County 911 CECOM has not received any reports of damage or calls for assistance from the earthquake, according to an operator we spoke to.
LERNA, Ill. (WCIA) – The United States Geological Survey says a magnitude 3.5 earthquake was reported 3 miles SSW of Lerna on Monday evening.
The 3.5 rating comes from the Richter Scale, which rates earthquakes on their strength. Earthquakes with a rating in the 3 range typically are felt but rarely produce quake happened at around 11:43p. It was fairly shallow beneath the surface, allowing for more shaking to be felt. Several viewers have messaged WCIA asking about the quake, reporting that they felt shaking.
