Woman charged with murder in Sask. Cree Nation homicide
The Saskatchewan RCMP major crimes unit has upgraded the charge in connection with the killing of a child under 10 years old on the Shoal Lake Cree Nation.
In an update sent shortly after 11 a.m. Friday, the Saskatchewan RCMP said Karrena Young now faces a second-degree murder charge.
According to the RCMP, the charge of manslaughter previously laid against the 23-year-old woman will be withdrawn at her next court appearance on June 26.
On May 23, at around 7 p.m., officers with Carrot River RCMP were called to the community following a report of a child under the age of 10 being seriously injured.
Police found the child inside a home in the community. Despite officers attempting life-saving measures, the victim was declared dead at the scene.
The death was determined to be suspicious, and RCMP major crimes took over the investigation.
A suspect was identified and taken into custody shortly after. Police confirmed Young and the victim were known to each other.
