7 Foods That May Help Boost Testosterone
Certain foods may help increase testosterone levels. Examples include fatty fish, dark green vegetables, cocoa products, and more. If you have low testosterone, follow a medical professional's recommendations on ways to increase your testosterone levels. While there is currently limited research into the benefits of certain foods on testosterone, you can ask your doctor about foods that may be beneficial to consume. Read on to learn more about foods that may help increase testosterone levels. 1. Fatty fish Fatty fish such as salmon and sardines are high in nutrients that are important for hormonal health, such as vitamin D, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids. Certain high fat foods, such as fried foods, have been linked to decreased testosterone levels in some people. However, a 2021 review of six studies found that low fat dietary patterns were associated with decreased testosterone levels compared with higher fat dietary patterns. The review noted that more high quality studies are necessary to fully understand this relationship. Adding sources of healthy fats, such as fatty fish, to your diet will likely benefit your overall health, including hormonal health. What's more, fatty fish are good sources of zinc and vitamin D, which are important for maintaining optimal testosterone levels. 2. Dark green vegetables A 2018 study found that people who consumed fewer dark green vegetables were more likely to have low serum testosterone levels. They were also more likely to develop hypogonadism, where the body does not produce enough testosterone. Examples of dark green vegetables include: kale spinach bok choy broccoli 3. Cocoa products While more research is necessary, some findings suggest that cocoa products may be beneficial for testosterone levels. A 2023 study found that LN18178, a herbal blend containing extracts of Punica granatum fruit rind and Theobroma cocoa seeds, helped increase testosterone levels in healthy young adult males. When you shop for cocoa products, such as chocolate, you may want to choose ones that contain no added sugar or only small amounts of added sugar. 4. Avocados Avocados contain magnesium and a mineral called boron, which may benefit testosterone levels. Boron is a trace mineral that seems to influence testosterone metabolism in the body and may protect against testosterone degradation. More research is necessary to fully understand how boron supplements affect testosterone. While medical professionals do not currently recommend boron supplements for increasing testosterone, adding dietary sources, such as avocados, may help maintain healthy testosterone levels. 5. Eggs Egg yolks are rich in healthy fat, protein, and selenium, a mineral that acts as an antioxidant in your body. According to a 2019 review, selenium may help enhance the production of testosterone by activating certain pathways and the expression of certain genes. Additionally, the review noted that testosterone levels are higher in those with optimal selenium levels in their blood. However, we need more research, especially in humans, before we can draw conclusions about selenium's effect on testosterone. 6. Berries, cherries, and pomegranates Berries and cherries are high in flavonoid antioxidants, which may help protect testosterone-producing cells from damage and increase testosterone production. Some limited evidence suggests that pomegranate juice may help increase levels of testosterone in athletes. However, more research is necessary to better understand how pomegranates or their juice can affect testosterone. 7. Shellfish Shellfish, such as prawns and mussels, are sources of zinc. Because of zinc's important role in reproductive health, zinc deficiency can cause hypogonadism. Zinc supplements may not be sufficient for managing hypogonadism. This means that increasing dietary intake alone may also be inadequate. However, you can speak with your doctor about whether they recommend increasing your zinc intake to increase testosterone levels. Frequently asked questions What are the symptoms of low testosterone levels? Some symptoms of low testosterone include: decreased sex drive reduced testicular size reduced bone and muscle mass loss of body hair It can also cause fatigue, weakness, and excessive sweating. Britain's Gisèle Pelicot: Woman reveals how husband repeatedly drugged her tea and raped her before taking pictures of her unconscious
A British woman has revealed how her husband drugged her tea and raped her while she was asleep over multiple years. Speaking on a BBC File on 4 Investigates podcast, Kate (not her real name), told how her husband confessed that for years he had been sedating, raping and taking photographs of her while she was unconscious. Behind closed doors her husband had been controlling and abusive. He has misused prescription pills and often became violent. On numerous occasions, Kate had woken up to find her husband having sex with her, which she could not consent to because she was asleep. She said her husband showed remorse after each time and convinced her that he too was asleep and didn't know what he was doing. Kate then supported him to get help from medical professionals for what he told her was a condition. At this point, Kate was oblivious to the truth that her husband had been spiking her tea at night, sedating her so that he could rape her while she slept. One day her husband sat Kate down and confessed to his horrific acts. 'I have been raping you', he told her, 'I've been sedating you and taking photographs of you for years'. Kate was speechless and sat in her chair frozen. She could not comprehend the vile acts her husband was admitting. He told her that if she went to police, his life would be over. So Kate did not tell the police. Over the next few months, the emotional trauma of her husband's admission took a toll on her physical health. Kate said she became ill, her weight plummeted and she began having panic attacks. Nearly a year later Kate suffered a severe panic attack and told her sister about her husband's confession. Kate's sister called her mother, who then called the police. Kate's husband was arrested and questioned. However a few days later Kate told Devon and Cornwall Police that she did not want to progress with the case. She said: 'I just wasn't ready. There was a grief. Not just for me, but for the children. Their dad would never be who he was.' She told her husband to move out of the house. Six months later, she went back to the police and an investigation was launched. After speaking to Det Con Mike Smith, she came to understand that she was the survivor of a serious crime. Her ex-husband's medical records confirmed that her husband had paid to see a private psychiatrist. In one session he had admitted drugging and raping his wife. He had also confessed to friends at the couple's church and fellow members of Narcotics Anonymous. Despite the evidence, the Crown Prosecution Service did not press charges. Kate applied for a formal review of the decision and six months later the CPS said it would press charges. The CPS apologised to Kate in a statement, saying they had made the wrong decision. 'While we get the vast majority of our charging decisions right the first time, this was not the case here and we apologise to the victim for the distress this will have caused,' a CPS spokesperson said. In 2022 the case was finally heard in court, five years after the initial confession. Kate's husband claimed that his wife has a sexual fantasy of being tied up in her sleep and woken up in that position to have consensual sex. He admitted drugging his wife, but said it was so that he could tie her up without waking her. He denied that the drugging was so that he could rape her. The ex-husband was found guilty of rape, sexual assault by penetration and administering a substance with intent, following a week-long trial. A judge described him as 'a self-obsessed person, endlessly prioritising his own perceived needs', who had shown 'no real personal remorse'. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison and given a lifelong restraining order. Kate has since been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a neurological disorder, both caused by the trauma of her past. She sees similarities between her experience and that of Gisèle Pelicot, whose ex-husband recruited dozens of men to rape his her while she was asleep. Kate said: 'I remember at the time just hoping and praying that she gets the support and the validation that she needs.' Under the Crime and Policing Bill currently going through Parliament, the government is creating a new specific criminal offence for spiking. Spiking is already a crime, but it is covered by other pieces of legislation - including the 1861 Offences against the Person Act. Under the new law perpetrators will face up to 10 years in jail. The Ministry of Justice says the creation of a specific offence will help police to keep track of spiking, and will encourage more victims to come forward.
