Travelers at Miami airport now dealing with new REAL ID requirement
Travel Travelers at Miami airport now dealing with new REAL ID requirement Passengers go through a checkpoint at Miami International Airport as the Transportation Security Administration started enforcing REAL ID for travel on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. pportal@ On the first day of a new travel ID requirement, security checkpoints at Miami International Airport seemed to be business as usual for passengers. Derril Young even had enough time on Wednesday afternoon to sit at a restaurant in Concourse D and drink a Corona as he wrapped up a vacation with his family in the Magic City. He already obtained his REAL ID so getting through TSA security and lines 'was quick and easy,' he said. The 44-year-old traveler, who works for the U.S. Postal Service, said that his 'no lines' experience at the airport was smooth and 'no different than before.' But to be extra-prepared, he also brought his passport even though his travels were within the U.S. Visiting from New York, he was waiting for his flight back home. His father, 61-year-old Teryl Dixon, didn't yet have a REAL ID but also had enough time to sit with his son and enjoy a beer because he brought his passport, which could be used instead of the new ID to board a plane for domestic travel. Without either, TSA said travelers would have to undergo extra security beginning May 7. 'I was worried lines would be long, but they weren't,' he said. Passengers Derril Young, left, and Teryl Dixon sit at a bar after going through their checkpoint at Miami International Airport on the first day of REAL ID requirements on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. Pedro Portal pportal@ MIA was expecting more than 141,000 passengers on Wednesday, said Greg Chin, communications director for Miami-Dade Aviation Department. Over the past 30 days, the airport has averaged 1% higher traffic than this year at the same time, he said. Still, the departure areas both pre-and post-security had plenty of space on Day One of Real ID. Sam Funderburk was seated at an airport restaurant with a work colleague before catching a flight back to Tallahassee. The 56-year-old traveler, who works in fertilizer sales, had come to South Florida for a work trip. Both had time to grab a bite before heading back. Funderburk said he has had a REAL ID for several years. Traveling on Wednesday 'was smooth,' he said. 'I didn't see any problems,' as he checked in and cleared security. Pedro Portal pportal@ What to know about REAL ID Without a REAL ID after the May 7 deadline, you can use a passport to get through TSA. But if you go to the airport without a Real ID, passport or another acceptable piece of identification after the deadline, the Department of Homeland Security warns you 'can expect to face delays, additional screening and the possibility of not being permitted into the security checkpoint.' The Transportation Security Administration states that fliers without acceptable identification will need to undergo additional security procedures before being allowed to board your flight. These ID requirements apply to everyone age 18 or older, including people with TSA PreCheck. People whose identity cannot be confirmed or who refuse to complete the additional screening will not be able to pass through airport security, according to the TSA. A REAL ID driver's license or state identification card can be easily identified by a star inside a circle in the upper right corner of the card. If your license has the star, it meets REAL ID standards. If not, you should apply for it as soon as possible at a driver's license office. Florida says REAL ID 'is a national effort to improve the integrity and security of state-issued driver licenses and identification cards, which in turn will help fight terrorism and reduce identity fraud.' Proposed sales-tax cut caught in the middle as DeSantis, Florida House speaker feud
Politics Proposed sales-tax cut caught in the middle as DeSantis, Florida House speaker feud Florida Governor Ron DeSantis shakes hands with Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez, R-Miami, after delivering his State of the State during the first day of the legislative session at the Florida State Capitol on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, in Tallahassee, Fla. mocner@ It's not every day that a Florida Republican comes out against a tax cut. But that's what happened Wednesday at a Tampa news conference when Ron DeSantis voiced his opposition to a Florida House plan to cut the state sales tax. 'We need to have a Florida-first tax policy here,' DeSantis said. 'Any Florida-last tax package is going to be dead on arrival.' The veto threat from DeSantis comes as state legislative leaders haggle over Florida's finances. The allotted 60-day legislative session came and went without lawmakers agreeing on how to craft the 12-figure state budget. Last week, Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez, R-Miami, and Senate President Ben Albritton, R-Wauchula, announced they had agreed to a budget framework that included billions in new tax cuts. The governor said it would permanently lower the state's sales tax by 0.25% — from 6% to 5.75%. DeSantis' threat to veto such a cut could throw a wrench into the ongoing budget talks. The governor's reasons for opposing the sales tax cut are many. He said the cut would disproportionately benefit out-of-town visitors at the expense of the state's fiscal health. He said the sales tax cut wouldn't do enough to help families struggling to afford groceries to justify its cost. DeSantis prefers a plan to lower property tax rates, which he says would more directly benefit residents. Earlier this year, he called for lawmakers to give homeowners a rebate on their property taxes. 'This would basically kill any chance of doing property relief for folks,' DeSantis said of the potential sales tax cut. 'Because what are they going to say next year? 'Oh, well, we don't have the money to do property tax relief.'' In response, Perez said the governor is 'confused.' The House speaker said in an emailed statement that the state can lower both state and property taxes. And he noted the governor has supported numerous sales tax holidays in the past. 'I give the Governor credit for starting this debate, but he's had months to produce an actual plan to lower property tax rates, and we're still waiting,' Perez said in the statement. 'An imaginary plan can't cut real taxes.' Any changes to property taxes would have to come either from the local level or from a constitutional ballot referendum that gets the approval of 60% of voters. DeSantis has pushed for lawmakers to craft such a referendum to put before voters. Last week, Perez formed a House committee to study the property tax issue. He plans for the committee to meet throughout the spring, summer and fall to weigh various policies. At the news conference Wednesday, DeSantis took a shot at Perez's committee. 'You don't convene a 37-person committee when you're trying to get something done,' DeSantis said. 'You convene a 37-person committee if you're trying to smother it in the crib.' ‘Everything is a drama': A look inside the Beckham family's rumored feud
News 'Everything is a drama': A look inside the Beckham family's rumored feud David and Victoria Beckham mocner@ Is a real life family feud brewing in Miami and beyond? Unfortunately, that's the buzz. After David and Victoria Beckham's oldest son, Brooklyn was missing in action (and all pics) at dad's 50th birthday party at Cipriani Downtown last month, tongues began to wag. Where was the budding chef and his actress wife Nicola Peltz? The Beckhams' other kids — Harper and her brothers Romeo, Cruz, who both brought their girlfriends — showed up to the black tie affair, which included such guests as Shaq, Tom Brady and Lionel Messi. When Brooklyn was MIA for yet two more of his father's celebrations across the pond, realization set in that something could be really amiss. So, what's it all about? A source exclusively told Us Weekly that there indeed is tension. The reason? Brooklyn is apparently not pleased that Romeo is dating his ex fling from years ago, Kim Turnbull, according to TMZ. The insider confirmed that Brooklyn did want to meet up with his parents, but separately, away from his brother and the DJ/model, but they said no. 'They just tell the whole family there's a party, 'Here's the time, here's the date,'' reported the insider. 'It's not that complicated. Everyone else seems OK with it.' TMZ reports the two brothers haven't been on speaking terms since December 2024. The soccer legend and onetime Spice Girl just wish everyone could get along and are apparently over the situation. 'David and Victoria just want to treat everyone the same and approach life like a family and the family does things a certain way,' the source explained. 'But Brooklyn isn't playing it like that, and everything is a drama.' This isn't the first time we've heard of internal strife among the Beckhams. Back before Brooklyn married Peltz in April 2022 at her parents' Palm Beach estate, the bride-to-be and Victoria were reportedly not even on speaking terms. Peltz cleared up the matter later in an interview with Variety, saying the rumors of trouble started because she chose not to wear a Victoria-designed wedding gown. 'I was going to and I really wanted to, and then a few months down the line, she realized that her atelier couldn't do it, so then I had to pick another dress,' the 'Transformers' star told the mag. 'She didn't say you can't wear it. I didn't say I didn't want to wear it. That's where it started, and then they ran with that.' Brooklyn added that the 'media' blew the disagreement out of proportion and that everyone gets along fine.
